NEVER TOO SMALL Sydney Small Apartment for Downsizers - 38sqm/410sqft

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For this significant downsize, designer Nick Gurney worked closely with his clients to design a unique 38m2 small apartment in Sydney that favours accessibility, functionality and storage. A lengthy side by side hallway storage unit and kitchen joinery that extends to a 7m long credenza, expand the utility and storage of the space, whilst demarcated zones that can easily be transformed, ensure that each occupant has the opportunity for privacy and solitude.

We have this as a requirement for all newly built apartments in Sweden. Any kind of renovation you do on new and old houses/apartments needs to be handicap and wheelchair accessible. This requirement has made it impossible to renovate older apartments bathrooms because they simply aren't big enough. All kitchens has to be build into the living space so that you can have bigger wheelchair accessible areas to move around in. A good thought, but not very practicle for everyone.

Wow, lots of armchair critics seem to want to convert this space into a high-dependency hospital room for when these guys can’t move or feed themselves. I know comments are for personal opinions and thats the joy of the internet, but this channel is to highlight the different uses of small spaces from the various and extraordinary briefs that clients give architects. How wonderful that these seniors can live in a compact urban space, enjoying the life of the city, with all the things they chose to keep in a way that suits them beautifully. I wish them years and years of happiness together in that space!

I know. Not all older people become incapacitated any way. They have clearly thought out what they want and are entitled to have it. Older people should no more have their lives controlked and dictated to than a 21 yr old. Another example of the rabid ageism that permeates society. Good on them is what I say.

To be fair, the architect said that this is supposed to be wheelchair accessible, when it actually seems deliberately designed to violate each and every accessibility standard (you have to stand upright to open and close the big cabinet, a wheelchair user could hardly pull out that table or reach any light switch or outlet, a wheelchair user could not pull down the bed and if they could it would be the wrong height for the transfer from and to bed etc). Had he simply called it "a very nice apartment with neat space-saving features" I think there would have been less criticism, but as it is, it's broadly the equivalent of giving wheelchair users the finger while shouting "Up yours, cripple!", so I think one should cut the (presumably wheelchair instead of armchair) critics some slack. It would be amazing to see a truly accessible tiny apartment (e.g. our household is using almost ten square meters just to store wheelchairs and related paraphernalia), but this is not it.

250 acres to 38 square metres! That's a hell of a change! I love how the architect explains there was actually nothing wrong with the previous apartment, it just didn't suit his client's specific needs. And that's what design is all about, finding the way the space can fit the needs of the individual rather than a cookie cutter model.

It's so refreshing to see downsized living, that also places a focus on accessibility. A major hurdle for older people, and people with disabilities, is the fact that disability takes up a lot of space, unless optimized. Optimization takes money, and often adds physical burden. (I.e. convertible living spaces vs. fatigue or low lung function) Of course, automation can bridge the gap, here, but again, it's expensive. Seeing designers take accessibility into account, and normalizing it makes living with a smaller footprint more realistic for the people who stand to benefit the most from it. This apartment is beautiful. ❤

I find that a lot of tiny apartment designs are a bit industrial/corporate looking. Almost like a dorm room rather than a house. I'm sure given the right client though, it can be changed to fit other people's tastes. I find that a lot of these tiny apartments go for more modernist looks rather than classic looks. They rarely incorporate things like crown molding, Italian architecture influences, or too much "fluff" that you see in more older or more classically designed homes, as all of that takes up space/has the potential to contribute to feeling more closed-in. Speculation, but it's possible that the budgets of the intended inhabitants play into the materials used as well.

this is such a beautiful apartment and I wish Coral and Jim many happy years there. those who say they liked the former design have overlooked how windowless the sitting room was. Silly! We need windows where we cook, eat, read and relax. Not in the bedroom. Such clever rearrangement of the space. Inspirational.

Might be my favorite on this channel. I love that in such a tiny footprint there is the option to leave the bed down. Love that the bed is accessible from both sides with so much storage beside each person. And here the module storage works to make a separate bedroom/office, instead of just a weird dark and unnecessary hallway storage space as in many featured apartments. Love that there’s such a large kitchen in such a small space. My one complaint is that the young guy narrating might have said “an older couple,” rather than “an elderly couple.” Being an older person myself, I can tell you that I cringed when he said “elderly.” They look in great shape, but still a good idea to be planning towards future needs.

@ImNotMad ButUR But i'm a magpie as well as an antiques dealer & my son (whom I've shared a tiny flat until recently) is both a collector & a hoarder - so with that combination it wasn't an ideal situation. Sharing limited space with someone who has the same passion for collecting put severe strain on space . 'A place for everything & everything in it's place ' soon went out the window. Believe me. If you live on yr own then it's a different scenario. Obviously

@ImNotMad ButUR Hi. Yes I'm in the uk. To be a successful antiques dealer you have to have passion & a 'good eye' - & you definatly sound as if you have both ! Have you thought of opening an eBay account ? It's perfect for reaching an international audience & also fits around what is going on at the moment. People are still buying. Not sure what AYBS is but i'm familiar with alot of antique programmes. Was busy restoring a cupboard in my new house today & discovered it had butterscotch bakelite knobs on the cupboard doors ! All hidden under layers of paint. (Butterscotch is the name of the colour - a rich yellow in other words ) was thrilled to bits ! Good to hear from a fellow lover of all things bygone. Best wishes x

Upon reflection, most homes probably would fail an “efficiency test” for use per square foot (meter). I look forward to downsizing myself. I’ll drop from just under 3000 square feet to about 1000 square feet. After watching this video I am compelled to look at going further. The challenge is these micro spaces often have custom built features that are not immediately available. Thanks for another wonderful space.

Downsizing allows you to experiment what your priorities really are, opposed to what you think they are. And when it's by choice, you can always chose to go back to a bigger home, so don't be afraid. I can tell you because I've tried it, it's a relief: you feel so relaxed, and like you can do much more than before. Great experience, totally recommend it!

whatever04 I have room in my home that I never go into... and I’m talking months on end. I’m an empty nester. I have three bedrooms of which only one is used as a guest room. Have as large a home is a waste of assets. I can apply the lost value to upcoming retirement or anything else I want. Whatever04, why do you feel that I must be wrong in making assessments for my life? It has no effect on you to the best of my knowledge and belief.

@@hughmanateeone857 Hugh, I applaud your impulse. Our first house was a 900 sf bungalow in Seattle, which felt very spacious to us, with an entry hall, large living/dining room, 2 bedrooms, kitchen with room for a table, and back porch space leading to the attic. We did buy a larger home later, but now in retirement I live comfortably alone in a little cottage of about 560 sf. I also rent out a 520 sf condo, in which I would be even more comfortable, since it's all on one level.

I have watched a lot in this series and this is my favourite. The architect is so mindful of his clients requirements now and into the future. Having just done a small 1930s apartment in London I wish we had considered some of these design elements but luckily we probably have time to do it again (one or twice).

This is one of the best design i have seen. I think the designer has done a great job and with a very cool client couple. this is the good example of good design coming from a harmonious client / architect relationship. Remember, it is not the designer's responsibility but the client do require something called 'client ethics' to make it work like magic. - from a professional from within this industry
