Congratulations for your channel ! Brown tips on the edges of the leaves usually happen because of a water full in minerals. In nature plants receive rain water which is clean of minerals - in our case we can use distilled water - and after a few months you will see the difference on the leaves . Plants that cannot stand tap water are especially all drachmas , all trasescandias , all prayer plants . Some times the salt and the minerals is so much that you can see on the serface of the soil white powder like powder - this is salt and minerals - too much and in this case you need to change the soil as well as the water.

That's exactly what I have. The tap water here is hard and seriously alkaline. So I add 1 tbsp/gal of lemon juice to make it acidic. Also, I add 1 tbsp/gal of Epsom salts to give the plants magnesium. If I don"t do that my plants soon develop crooked leaves and don't do well. This also happens when I use distilled water. But the result is that I see white mineral crust on edges of pots and even on top of soil, and the edges of leaves are getting yellow. What should I do? I'll appreciate any suggestions.

These are great tips! I'm planning on getting a moisture meter soon.. In the meantime I'm using a bamboo stick. The other thing I always do is lightly touch all of my plants leaves. You can tell how thirsty they are or if there is something amiss if they don't feel firm. For example, I have a very healthy non veriegated spider plant. Some of the bigger babies felt sort of limp when I touched them, while the rest were fine.. When I traced the stems back, it turned out there was a kink or quite a bend in the stem. So I cut the babies to propogate before they just withered away

Once upon a time, I tried to keep a bonsai tree - well, several. Guess how many I have now? None. I rationalized that it was such an unnatural state for them that I was excused for letting them die. Took me a while to understand that houses are not natural environments for plants either, and so, to keep them and the homeowner healthy and happy, it takes learning how they do what they do, why they prefer certain conditions, and raising them under those conditions. In the end, the plants are happy (got a houseful of them now), and I'm happy having them around. This is a great series of common-sense advice and learning about how to keeps plants healthy and happy. And yes, I talk to them and sometimes stroke their leaves. I play music pretty loud, too. Understand your plants and give them care. It's therapeutic. ...and I may consider a new bonsai now.

If you find your plant is drying up too soon after watering or some parts are going crispy, check the roots and if the roots are overgrown and getting rout bound then its time to upgrade to a bigger pot! I guess i am a little confused as to when to water from the top and when to bottom water... if we are supposed to let the soil dry out before watering, and you suggested ensuring all the roots get water by top watering, but you regularly bottom water, how are you ensuring all the roots get water? Is top watering just for when we wait TOO LONG to water and everything is crisp? Does my question make sense?

Word to the wise my Alocasia did start out in a mesh plug about 5cm then stuck into a 16cm pot and drenched. The mesh is some plastic fine stuff which the roots struggle to push through and the soil inside seemed dry. some roots did grow down but due to the size of the pot i dont think they would of been enough to use the water fast enough not to cause root rot. Most of the plant under the soil was mush but i did find a corm so maybe just maybe i didnt buy a £2.50 plastic pot lol. That said problems are as much a part of the hobby, hope this helps someone.

Excellent tips but what about Calathea's that are developing leaves that have both brown edges and yellow leaves? I have on that had a leaf with brown edges and the rest was completely yellow. The moist was wet enough I think. Makes me wondering if it still didn't get enough water (yellow) or even too much water because of the brown.

@@SheffieldMadePlants , thank you for clearing that up. I live in Delhi. The summers here are legendary. Temperatures last year reached 115 F. We get at least right weeks of heat with 35 to 45% humidity. So watering is a primary concern. Using a humidifier in the kind of space we have or on the porch is not possible.
