FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good Friday afternoon, meine liebe Freundin!! I have handed this plant over to it's owner with instructions, but I keep checking on it, just in case 😆 I feel responsible, although my daughter said that she has read up on it's care... 'she needs RO water' 🤣 now, if she starts to get a houseplant kick... she will have to buy me a bag of leca 🫣😆 thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! 😍HI Denise! 💐 I loved my houseplants in leca and self watering. I was THAT consumer back in the 80s... I had so many tropicals in my home in Germany, just to have some kind of 'Kenya' in my home. When leca came with the self watering pots and the reservoir, I went mental!! 😆 this was fun and I hope my daughter's Peace Lily will do well for her 🤞🏼 thank you so very much for watching a non orchid related video 🫶🏼❤️🌸

I see so many people here dumping leca for plants in favor of PON. I had a bag of that stuff and I threw it out, I couldn't work with it. But I don't grow in leca either, maybe I'm just jaded. I stopped using potting soil for most house plants, now they go into a coconut husk chunk mix. And that's my story.

Don Miguel 😍💐 hola jefe! How nice to see you 🫶🏼 hope you are having a great Friday and gearing up for some fun stuff 😃 I have never used PON, but if it works for those that use it, great 👍🏼 I have to say, now that I am so used to being able to not have to keep buying media, even if I could, I probably would not experiment with PON. Quite frankly, not having to worry about sourcing any form of substrate is a huge relief for me. As for you using leca or coconut husk, same thing! You are happy with what you do, how things grow and that is all that matters. I have seen so many videos of how to use leca with houseplants, and how 'it also destroys roots etc etc', well, it all boils down to how much the root system is handled, no matter what media it is going to go in to next. Hope my daughter can use this video as a reference for the future. Right now, she is very protective of her new plant, and says, she has done the research and will care for it as per 👍🏼 vamos a ver 🥰 wishing you a wonderful day and weekend ahead! Thank you so much for taking a moment to be here and comment 🫶🏼 I know how busy you are ❤️🌸

Thank you for this video. I was thinking about doing this with my African violets 💕

  • @NinjaOrchids

😍 Helloooo!!! 😍💐 with African Violets, remove the 2cm of soil around the base because the leca will wick that up into the soil and African Violets are prone to stem rot, so I would then top dress with some horticultural grit or any small non wicking gravel to avoid the leca being too damp around the base. Having a fine, thin root structure, small leca as well for them. IF they start to show some form of powdery mildew on the lower leaves, I would put them back into soil. I have limited experience with African Violets in leca, but while they like a LOT of humidity around their leaf structure, too much of it without enough movement in the air to keep the humidity moving, could prove problematic. If you try it, would you let me know how it goes? We used to have African Violets growing in the garden under the shade of the trees. I LOVE them!! Thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! Thank you so much for inspiring me with your name, always resulting in lifting my spirits!! 🙏🏼 hope you are already having a great Friday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids we average around 20% but June is our driest month and when the sun is the hottest, it can dip to 2% (100f or 38c, we have reached 122f or 50c outside). At those high, outdoor temperatures, my houseplants never see high humidity because we run the air conditioner 24/7 to keep inside temperatures 75-85f, just what orchids love. 💖🌞🌵😷

Hi Shirley 😍💐 welcome!! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for watching! Truly appreciate your time and comment 🙏🏼 Pon, I have not used it because I cannot source it locally. I stick to what I can find in the shops, here in S'ern Spain, and unfortunately Pon is not on the shelves. From what I have heard and read, Pon comes charged with nutrients, which is great if the plant is huge and can handle whatever they have charged it with. However, how much is Pon charged with? The concentration and would an overdose burn the leaves because there is no control for fertilizing to begin with. These are thoughts that I have about Pon... but again, they are just thoughts, so I am not against it, I just prefer to have a substrate where I control the fertilizer levels. Please let me know how your plants will do in leca and lava rock, moving forward. I am super interested. Also, your choice of medium sized lava rock is GREAT! 👍🏼 I wish you a wonderful day, Shirley and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Ciao Nina buona giornata. Grazie pet l'utile video. Domando: nella tua esperienza hai mai provato a far crescete piante grasse o cactacee in leca oppure in roccia lavica e SH? Io non mi sono mai azzardata a farlo, ma una persona che conosco mi ha detto che per lei è un ottimo metodo che queste succulente gradiscono molto. Tu che ne pensi??? Grazie per la tua grandissima pazienza ❤

Ciao Luciana!

🌸🥷🏼 Troy San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good afternoon from sunny Spain to a hopefully, beautiful sunny morning where you are at 🫶🏼 I filmed this video, mainly for my daughter, as a reference if she needs it one day, so... this is great! Thank you for letting me know that you needed a houseplant transition video 😃 you are definitely safe to use this set up, but you can keep your plant higher in the pot 👍🏼 let the airflow do it's thing, your layer wont dry out as much or as quickly! AND, if you can, choose large leca for the surface of the pot, while the roots are in small leca 👍🏼 you will counteract any conditions that you find yourself in, when your humidity rises to 'no need for a shower, I can't dry off anyway' status! 😂 thank you so much for your comment, 🌸🥷🏼Troy San! Truly appreciate you and your support 🫶🏼 have a fabYOUlous rest of your day ❤️🌸

Hi, love the channel! I just recently got started with orchids this year, and my first plant was a mounted Cattleya intermedia. I've been really enjoying it and wanted to give SH with LECA a try, so I went and ordered myself a Zygopetalum Debbie De Mello 'Honolulu Baby' AM/AOS. I'm a little nervous about the differences in culture since I've only ever grown the one epiphytic orchid and this'll be my first terrestrial, and I was wondering about people's opinion on using heat mats with SH! I figured it would help ease the transition and provide that day/night temperature difference (I grow exclusively indoors under LEDs in Chicago, so besides turning the HVAC down at night there's not much else I can do with the temperature), but I wasn't sure if it would make enough of a difference to be worth the investment, or if the lower solubility of oxygen in water at higher temperatures would deprive the roots in a significant way. Curious to know if anyone has experience with the heat mats, or just Zygos in SH in general!

Hi Guilherme 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for watching this video and for your kind feedback on the channel. I appreciate the support very much! If you would like to check out this video link kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqKEpauRlNHcgLA.html in it I repot a Zygo hybrid, which will give you some pointers for when you want to change your substrate to leca and many other tips about Zygo roots etc. Know that, you are safe growing any terrestrial or semi terrestrial orchid in leca, semi hydroponics. The concept was, after all, invented to houseplants, and many orchids fall under that category. Now, using heat mats with leca is ideal, but keep the warmth of the heat mats to just a little warmer than ambient air, you only want to counteract the evaporative cooling that leca has, not warm the roots as such. When it comes to temperature drop, Zygos do not need one if they are in leca, because the leca will cool the pot down just because of the evaporative cooling, AND until your Zygo is not settled in and growing well, I would not worry too much about lowering temperatures. The hybrids are bred to be 'easy' to grow and bloom. Easy being relative, I know, but they are not as fussy to perform well within the home where the temperatures are kept as per what we as humans prefer. I used to grow with heat mats, and if you have any further questions as you check out the content of my channel, please always feel free to ask. I have also got a LOT of years under my belt growing orchids in organic media, should you have any questions in that regard. I hope you are having a great day and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids @NinjaOrchids Wow thanks so much for all the info and for the lightning fast reply!! I've found so many helpful tips on your channel these past few months, both for orchids as well as SH plants in general, and there's a lot of great energy surrounding all your videos and livestreams :D I have a few other houseplants growing in self-watering pots, but those have all been organic media so far, so I'm excited to make the jump to LECA! I'll have to see if I can make one of your streams at some point, and maybe then I can give some updates on what'll hopefully be a happy and well-adjusted zygo seedling 🙏 At any rate, everything I've read online so far seems to indicate it'll be less fussy than the bifoliate cattleyas I've been otherwise enamored with haha. The intermedia hasn't been tooooo too much trouble beyond the huge watering needs of an indoor cork mount, but I have an aclandiae fma coerulea on the way too (it's always just ONE more plant...) that I'm planning on growing in a teak basket. Thanks again for all the lovely and entertaining content!! Happy to be in such a supportive space with other growers

I am so sorry that YT did not show me your reply sooner 🙄 it would be awesome to see you in a live stream some day. While I can, I like to be outside... if I do streams during the winter, I am sitting in the dark and can't really be pro active doing 'stuff', so... thank you for your kind feedback, that means a lot 🫶🏼 my cattleya intermedia is growing well enough for being a bifoliate. I just don't have the right winter conditions to get it to bloom anymore. But, I grow in hope that one day I can afford to provide the warmth and turn the lights on again during the winter. For the time being, I do not have the budget. Still, as long as I can get my orchids through the winter alive, maybe one day, things will change. Really appreciate your kind words, Guilherme, thank you!! Have a fabYOUlous day 🫶🏼❤️🌸
