Great video Richard! About your Fungus Gnats situation: Compost will indeed increase the problem of fungus gnats due to how wet it gets/stays. While our soil does not solve it, it does help in keeping their numbers down as the mixes will retain less water than compost & keep on to just enough water for the specific species (so i.e. more retention in Alocasia mix than Cacti mix).| There is also another reason SYBASoil helps (which might have been the case in your situation): Our worm castings (sometimes, not consistently) contain predatory mites which attack the Gnats. They often die during transport and we cannot really guarantee a healthy arrival right now. But something fun to consider if we do get to a point where we can consistently keep them alive in the bag. We are going to be working with Wageningen University to increase their lifespan in the bag and increase the effect next year! Sybren from Sybotanica 🌿🍃🌱

A 1:4 of Hydrogen perox (3%) & water will do wonders... but won't kill the adults from laying new eggs, so that nifty yellow sticky trap @SheffieldMadePlants showed, along with saturating the soil (not the greens) with hydroPerox/Water solution targets larvae in the soil - shouldn't be used frequently as it can kill off the good microbes if used too often... sterilizes everything (not good for plant) - but very good periodically to oxygenate & rid the soil of fungus.

A warning for anyone outside of the UK… When he says “compost” just be aware that he’s not talking about actual compost. Brits call potting soil “compost” for some reason. I would hate for anyone to ruin their houseplants by trying to use compost!

I had a spider plant that needed transplanting and when I pulled it out of the small pot in the bottom of it was all root so I cut a bunch of it off just like in the other video. I did that yesterday so we’ll see what happens. Like some of the routes were so thick they look like small wax beans. And this was in like a 6 inch pot so I’m glad I guess I got to it as fast as I could.

I really like LECA, it’s so low maintenance. But I will say that’s it’s not all the same quality!! I bought some at my local nursery that caused this white mold & almost killed my plants but the stuff I bought on Amazon was great!! I actually think PON is even easier because it can have nutrients right in it & it’s not as prone to rot if you miss removing some of the soil from the roots. I used to buy it on Etsy & use self-watering pots. I’ve never had fungus gnat problems with LECA or PON either.

I LOVE LECA for houseplants. No gnats, no risk of overwatering. I use it for my cuttings, but I've also cleaned soil from small houseplants and transplanted them into LECA. Keep the water level below the top layer of LECA and no mosquitoes either. I have a whole windowsill garden with LECA in containers I made from plastic milk containers.

  • @dawnt6791

@@SheffieldMadePlantsNope. Even in my dry climate, it's no more maintenance than my potted houseplants. Water and fertilize the same was the rest of my plants, and trim/thin as needed as with potted plants. Since I use opaque-sided containers, I don't even have to deal with algae growth in the water column or on the LECA that's often a problem in transparent/translucent containers/vases.

I keep skewers of 3 sizes in empty vases handy and use them to steer my plants into a nice, centered, vertical direction when they are prone to leaning.. I don’t tie anything up or stab into the roots aggressively.. I just use them to lean my plants more upright and adjust every so often as I rotate my plants and they’re looking lovely!

I’ve started to switch to more soilless medias like aroid mixes to avoid gnats. I just try to give the plants the best conditions I can and I fertilize with a liquid fish fertilizer during watering . Yup I’ve also been doing lots of leca and pon. Pon for the smaller rooted plants and leca for monstera. I just transitioned a bushy monstera plant into leca and some leaves turned yellow but it’s pushing lots of new leaves and I have it more light. It’s really humid in southeast America so it loves it and I give it rainwater in the bottom and leave it.

Fungus gnats are a nightmare. I’ve started sterilising any compost I intend to use inside the house by baking it at a low temperature in the oven until it gets to about 80 degrees, which seems to be hot enough to kill off the larvae. HOWDY! I use pebbles in my saucers religiously. I water as you have taught me to, but never with tap water because we have very, very, very hard water. The saucers pebbles are for humidity. But, I do not live in Jolly Old England, I live in the Mojave Desert in the Southwest U.S. When it rains twice a year, I put all my plants outside to get a wash and a flush. They love it! Question - Doesn't your tap water have chlorine in it? Your plants attest to your care, but if I must use tap water, I let it sit for at least three hours for the chlorine to evaporate. Happy Trails!

I tried using ground cinnamon to get rid of gnats but it didn't work very long, only worked while dry. I had a lot of cinnamon sticks (leftovers from Xmas crafts) and laid them around all my plants and for months I haven't seen any critters. Yeah! Love your comedy instructions. I just received a couple of live orchid plants. I know nothing about them. My friends saw my artificial orchids and thought I did so well with them. Wish me luck. LOL From another friend I received a spider plant. Her friend had gave it a "trim" not knowing anything about them. Needless to say It will be a while before that one gets around my plants. "No they don't need a trim. Now it probably won't have babies and I wanted to be a grandma. So go away!" Richard, Thank you for the laughs and the wonderful info. You are the best one on KZread. Hugs!

I stopped using clay pots years ago. I live in the desert of southern Arizona, USA, and those clay pots result in houseplants drying out WAY too fast. Makes even easy care plants very high maintenance.

Try the Pon out 😊. I have everything in pon and the plants seem to like it. I use both terracotta and self watering pots dependent on whether plants are thirsty ones or not. Hoyas are in terracotta (I have around 50) and the rest philodendrons, monstera, peace lilies etc are in self watering pots. Enjoyed the video, your editing is top notch!

I thought I had reached my love capacity for your channel but apparently I was wrong; your content just keeps getting funnier and funnier, every time!👏🤣 However, as much as I thoroughly enjoy your humor, the bedrock of my channel-love stems from my brand new green thumb that you’ve helped me grow! (all puns intended;-)). No exaggeration, you’re channel has taken me from 3 Pothos (which I consider unkillable) to 34 new and thriving plants, including some of the more persnickety varieties. I actually have a thriving basil plant for the first time, after decades of trying 1-2 times per summer to get them to last even a week! And, I’m also pruning and propagating like a boss!! I credit you, Sir, for my magical plant windows which have so completely enhanced my environment for the better. So, thank you for my new green thumb, and your giggle-fest tutorials that helped grow it!!🙏👏

Commercial composts are "fermented" outdoors, so they can come loaded with Sciarid Fly eggs. So when I use any for seeds or young seedlings, I put about 2lbs of slightly damp compost into a polythene bag, clip it loosely shut, then nuke it to get it hot enough to make steam. Repeat a couple of times to make sure the heat and steam penetrate to the interior to kill off not only the eggs, but most fungal spores that can cause "Damping Off" of seedlings.

The humourous style really suits you, it keeps me coning back for more, Well done and Thanks. I did cut the roots of 2 peace lilies after watching the video on that topic, and they are doing great! Thinking about it logically, it makes sense as the root is just looking for water, a long root is just wasted space. Dunno why I didnt think of it before.
