I know Freddie as his brother Pepper and I were in the army together. Pepper taught me how to box at the Ft. Bragg Boxing Gym many years ago in the early 80s. Freddie fought on the undercard of Marvelous Marvin Hagler's first middleweight title defense in 81. Pepper and I drove up to Boston that weekend to see the fight. That's when I first met Freddie and his trainer, the legendary Eddie Futch. Good ol' times in boxing back in those days.

A lot of comments and hardly any mention of the legend in Freddie's corner. Eddie Futch, who was actually honored in the ring prior to this fight, is one of the greatest boxing minds ever. No legit boxing person would argue that. He learned from one of the best.

So glad to see that Top Rank is dipping into their archives to show their early ESPN TOP RANK SHOWS. It's the fights like these that allowed the boxers of the past to fight on a consistent basis and develop in front of the boxing fans. The boxing fan enjoyed following the boxers progress on the Weekly Top Rank as the boxer worked towards moving into title contention. Well matched shows with boxers who competed to become the best. Please continue to provide the new boxing fans with these shows from your archives Thank you.
Along way from the South Side Gym in Roslindale MA Freddie and Pepper were fun to watch. So glad Freddie Roach had great success as a trainer!
It's surprising to see his fighting style. For some reason I thought it would be more akin to Manny's style, but I'm seeing a lot of influence from Frazier's style in Freddy's style. Although he did seem to take way too many unnecessary punches to the head 😬
