Neural Amp Modeler vs Mesa/Boogie JP-2C

There has been a lot of buzz lately about the Neural Amp Modeler, so I decided to put it to the test by using it to clone my Mesa/Boogie JP2C, and shoot it out against the real amp. All sound samples are unprocessed with no post EQ, and only a hard limiter to increase the final volume. They also use the same York Audio Mesa Rectifier cabinet IR to keep things consistent. You can download my JP2C capture files here: tonehunt.org/Paul.Jacovino/cb...

What is crazy and what I find the most mind-blowing is that modeling not only is the future but also it sounds ( in my experience ) much better than traditional amplifiers because we have access to absolutely all the settings that are not the case on a tube or transistor amplifier. Many people complain about modeling because they usually stick to the basic presets, whereas if you take the time to adjust everything yourself I hold onto the result that I have had for all these years playing on tube amps. The only advantage of these amps is that they are much simpler, with fewer settings.

  • @PMJmetal

I’ve been a proponent of modeling for a long time. In my opinion, for a lot of use cases the convenience supersedes any tonal difference. I’ve used so many pieces of gear extensively and seem to always gravitate to plugins for recording, and my Helix for live use. Thanks for checking out the video!

only for the miced up sound and for convenience. I now use three amps at the same time in the studio vs a loud drummer. Modellers can only cope if I run them in the loop of the amps. Through pa speakers forget it and none can model my system with dual amps and separate amp for harmonizer for example.

Thanks for the comment, Andy. I totally agree. The real amp still has a little something to it. But again, unless someone where to show them side by side, it wouldn’t really be possible to notice a difference. Thanks for checking the video out!

This plug-in alone should absolutely push other companies to make their sims sound as realistic as possible going forward. IMO Fractal is still king when it comes to engineering the most realistic sim and effects, while making them extremely customizable. I realize this plug-in is about captures, and for most people, all they want is an amp and overdrive with very basic delay and reverb, and that’s fine. For others, we love having the best of the best for inspiration. This plug-in is a huge step to pushing for companies to create higher quality. Can’t wait for the day when open source effects become as good as top shelf hardware and plug-ins.

1:21 Can you explain the difference in sound between the Boogie "pushing Air" and the Neural Amp Modeler playing through various different PC sound cards (or are you using a PA and how close does that sound to the Boogie in a live room?) also, what is the sustain like on the Neural Amp Modeler compared to a Boogie live Amp turned up loud? I cannot see how there could be any real sustain .. maybe I'm wrong? For me an amps sustain is EVERYTHING .. when listening to classic rock songs and solos they were all recorded with loud Amps .. cam the Neural Amp Modeler reproduce that loud Amp on the verge of feedback sound?

there is still a little bit of a difference. Maybe it's just a little bit low fidelity than the real amp. Damn amazing though. Nothing Anybody'll miss for sure.

The difference is notable. You also need to consider that changing the amp settings in the model will lead to a lot more inaccuracy, unlike in the actual amp.
