@@clementibeh2620 the Vertonghen goal was a bit flukey but Fellaini was a good switch in tactics to sub on. Either way, point I was trying to make was that in both games, the teams went for the win rather than sit back and play it overly conservative.

Japan was the better team and deserved to go through. Loved watching them play, hopefully they come back stronger!

As a Dutch person I'd like to see our country win with well deserved points. Through good tactical play and hard work. You can't classify a team as 'good' when it's based on luck and penalties. But I suppose this is how football nowadays is.

@Yoram Veen, van der The new rules in the penal box are: 1) hands (even tied in the back), brush (with or without contact), light contact, pass to keeper even without control (Cameroon) by a defender of second-class' countries are penalty. 2) Dives, obstruction on goal keeper or push on defender while corner by an attacker of first-class countries are legitimate. For France-USA I hope a fair refereeing but I don't think so after Italy-USA

Unfortunately, this happened to be against yesterday's far better team. It is sour for football lovers or Japan fans in yesterday's match.

@NGLApexIx No it's not. The referee has to deem it intentional or in an unnatural position. There are plenty of examples of shots on target that hit the arm/hand and the referee plays on because it is not intentional. The penalty in this game was a joke.

Well it does, but only regarding the punishment for the player. Intentional = red card, unintentional = no card. IOW it was a perfectly legit penalty.

This is the match where Martens was significantly injured by her team mate while celebrating. This injury significantly ratcheted back her ability to excel in subsequent matches. She was in constant pain and her ability to play was always a last minute decision.

Aside from the PK, I enjoyed the game. No dives, barely any fouls, just two teams going at it. GG

@@tisfissa because the arm was close to the body, natural position, the ball was shot at a short range close to the player. I am a certified grade 5 referee in the US and they go through these things in the camps and everything but these refs seem like they forgot everything taught at those camps.

@@tisfissa The Japanese's player's arm was by her side. In fact, she even, instinctively, moved her arm AWAY(so as not to "touch" the ball) as the Dutch player took the shot. It was not an intentional "handball". It was ball to her arm. The referee made the wrong decision. Some of the referees in this world cup are just ... Not ready to officiate at this level. Their bad decision making has cost some teams dearly.

@Prince Emmanuel Nitafan Basically, the referee decided that "the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger." I disagree; her arm is close to her body, not raised, and the ball has high up on the arm. It's difficult to move your upper arm completely out of the way, and she hasn't made her body unnaturally bigger in my opinion. Also, of all the angles available to FIFATV, it's strange that we only see two that don't show how close her arm was to her body.

LOVELY GOALS FROM BOTH SIDE DESPITE MARTINS'BRILLIANCE

In stark contrast to the US fans who adamantly believe the US played well against Spain by diving for 2 penalties/goals, I very much respect the Netherlands fans for having the human decency to acknowledge that Japan played well and were potentially robbed with a questionable decision. Very good game though ;)

With the new rules that shouldn't have been a penalty. Her arms weren't in an unatural position. The best example is in the champions league final when the spurs player was pointing at something and the ball hit his hand, that was an unatural position, it wasn't intentional but it was still a penalty.

if the ball hits your hand it's a foul. That is the rule. Watch how most players have their hands behind their back during in direct kicks. It's so the ball won't hit their hand/arms

Fifa changed the rule so that any contact with an arm is now a foul. It used to be up to the referee's interpretation on whether the arm was in an unnatural position which might show the player's intention to block the ball. The real problem is that they've done this and the much more ridiculous rule about goalkeepers having to stay on the line during penalties up to the exact moment of the kick, while also adding var. There was no var this time but it's var + those two rules that are messing up everything this world cup.

@@corneliusscipio777 lol you couldn't even hit the ball from outside the area ,let alone score like they do . I play, I coached and I refereed at all levels, is usually those who never amounted to anything that try and bring the professionals down. Ever seen a game from the 80s in the men's league? They wish they had players in their teams that could play as good as most of the girls in this world cup . This is new , relatively new in most countries , and they are already really good ,you'll see how good they get in 10 years from now when even better players arrive.

@@jlbueno0611 exactly because it is new in so many countries I regret that both in refereeing and in teams themselves the wrong lessons have been learned from mens football. When I started watching some of these matches I was astonished by the amount of fouls, foulbaiting, aggressive play, unnesecary penalties, extremely defensive play. It feals like many coaches saw this as a clean sheet to apply the mens meta on and amplifie it.

In the future you will try to hit the arms of the defenders - this is often a bit easier than to make a goal directly

Why I’m so unimpressed about this World Cup ? All this penalties given for anything!

The matches are very interesting and the nations are playing really good. But yeah I agree, too many penalties assigned for not so bad fouls committed. They should take it easy with these decisions

@@ZachSawyer2077 the problem comes to "where you put the line", because soft could be penalty for some teams and no penalty for others, this way there is nothing to reclaim.

Good call by the ref. VAR proved her call correct. Rules followed, just as in any game.

Indeed. She blocked a shot on goal with her arm. If she had her arms behind her back, even if it still touched her arm, it would not have been a penalty

Arms were against the body, no intent in handballing. The pb comes from both VAR and this stupid new rule.

@@C_medina_ Have you never seen a defender jump in front of the ball with his arms behind his back? It shows to the ref he's trying not to touch the ball with his arms, so if it does, it's unintentional. The play goes on normally

Once again, the penalty was the man of the match.

You want to see an honest game, or do you want to see 'actors looking for a change to get the other player booked for a yellow/red card'? Football is about winning games. If, by any change, a team does that with awesome football skills, that is just a bonus.

Unlucky Japan, what a beautiful performance

Despite the Netherlands towering over them the Japanese women deserved to win. I've never seen such elegant passing...spectacular...a pleasure to watch.

should not be a penalty, check the match between Norway and Australia, Norway got two similar handball, Australia was not given even one penalty

VAR is good! They just need to look more into if the player is purposely using their hands to stop the ball or not. As a result, that should have not been a penalty.

Well, I’m Dutch so of course I’m happy that they made it. Yet I don’t like the way they’ve won. I prefer clean wins. Anyway… we’ll see how far they will get. Hup Holland hup
