Netherite Upgrades & Ancient Debris! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.33]

Ойындар

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
This tutorial will show you how to upgrade your diamond equipment to Netherite using the new Netherite Upgrade smithing template, where to find Ancient Debris, and how to craft more Netherite Ingots.
What should your first Netherite Upgrade be? A netherite pickaxe will mine for longer. A netherite hoe will get you a sweet advancement (and be surprisingly useful!), and netherite armour offers more protection from the game's hardest hitting enemies.
We compare the damage, durability, and other benefits of Netherite equipment. Netherite gear is fire- and lava-proof, and so is Ancient Debris - but while the blocks are blast-proof when placed in the world, the individual items can be destroyed by explosions.
Speaking of explosions, after pickaxe mining for ancient debris, we look at some quicker and more destructive methods like TNT mining and the infamous bed method!

    I have a theory - fortune pick is more likely to hit ores with xp, whereas silk pick has no chance of mending-repairs, therefore silk pick benefits more from the added durability of netherite. I keep fortune as diamond so it's immediately obvious which pick is the WRONG ONE to break the ender chest! I try to follow through with other tools - netherite = silk, diamond = fortune. I wish there was another visual way to personalise tools!

    I just created a 120 block radius void in the nether for a gold farm and in doing so gathered enough ancient debris to last ages. It took a mighty long time though. The was a bastion within the radius that got totally dismantled in the effort. I have generally adopted this method, create a huge project that in effect leaves you with plenty of materials for others.

    Coming here straight from the podcast, I just wanted to say that even when I feel like I know everything there is to know about a topic you are covering, I almost always learn something new and I always enjoy episodes of the survival guide. As a mentor in my server to family and friends playing who are not as experienced, it's always very nice to be able to point to your videos and recommend them as a detailed breakdown. In many ways I find these episodes just as entertaining as hermitcraft or empires or many of the other SMPs out there, but it's because of you and the way you lay out your videos. Thank you so much and never assume that your survival guide doesn't provide much to your seasoned followers!

    Quick tip for bed mining - Bring some doors with you. If you stand inside a door, especially a warped door that is fireproof, fire won't spawn at your feet and lava won't fall on top of you and will instead go around the door. This gives you more time to block lava streams and lets you avoid taking fire damage.

    Having used all three methods for a while, here's my review of the three methods: Branchmining method: By simply buying Efficiency II or greater diamond pickaxes from toolsmiths, and digging two block wide tunnels along every chunk border. I find this the cheapest, quickest and safest method. The tunnels are manageable and making them is basically effortless, and diamond pickaxes can be very cheap. You miss a lot of ancient debris but i think the speed makes up for it, plus this method has the advantage of being able to be cleared out using explosives later if you wish. Tnt method: Assuming you have a gunpowder farm and shovels capable of instamining sand, this method is very reliable and uncovers a large area. I find the process of placing and lighting tnt as well as navigating the exploded tunnels a bit tedious, though. Overall a quick, relatively safe, but expensive method. Bed method: By having a sheep farm and wood to be able to carry more beds, or simply buying them from shepherd villagers. This method uncovers the largest area out of the three, but the process of placing the bed and exploding it safely, as well as crafting beds every so often, are very tedious. The craters made by this methods are extremely precarious, as well. I find this a relatively cheap method for early game especially, but extremely precarious and rather slow method. Overall I think the branch mining method is the best, and if you feel the need of uncovering all the ancient debris in an area, you can explode the 2x2 tunnels at a later date with another method.

    I personally find that the best way to mine for ancient debris is just to mine along chunck borders but - with an efficiency 5 pickaxe in netherrack - you can instantly mine the blocks and so it's really easy (and fun) to just dig a wider tunnel. It's not as pretty as a 2x1 tunnel as you can just go absolutely ham with it but i find that either the bed or tnt method are just way too messy for me.

    Great video as usual, including how to deal with less-than-optimal mining environment. As you plunge down into the depths of the nether to level 14 and optimal cinnabon (debris) hunting. I prefer to use the same 'left hand drive' torch placing while branch mining like done here. Congratulations on your Serious Dedication! Sometimes you just need to play the game for fun. The next nearest bastions I've found exploring are two Hoglin stables and Piglin apartment complex. The apartments are 1,000 blocks southwest of the treasure bastion, quite too far out of the way. Piglin Apartments have as much loot and gold as the Treasure bastion, including trims and other items. But that Treasure bastion has the unique magma cube spawner, something very useful for builders with access to frogs.

    I would like to point out a statement made 15:32.. upgrading the hoe because it’s fun.. There are a lot of people who grind this game.. playing as efficiently as possible.. making farms as optimal as possible.. and sometimes even shaming others for not progressing as that same pace or playing as efficiently.. and that can at worse lead to cyber bullying.. I am an advocate of playing games how you want.. they are intended to be FUN.. and your playing style kind of teaches the same.. doesn’t matter how you play or progress.. as long as you’re having fun.. and it not just Minecraft.. that should apply to all games.. THANK YOU for that.. I’ve followed you since the HermitCraft Recaps.. and I love your Survival and SkyBlock series..

    I like using the 2x2 checkerboard method that you previously used for ancient debris, no . I also like to collect and smelt all of the nether rack into nether bricks using buckets of lava as well, as I use them for red nether brick builds that I have.. And a 2x tnt duper bouncing off of progressively lower floors of obsidian can make short work of a wide area. Or just clear out a perimeter for a wither skeleton farm. You are sure to find a few ancient debris by clearing such a big space to bedrock. And bamboo scaffolding works great to displace and clear lava with in large quantities, although it will burn in item form. You can also use buckets to ferry lava back to your smelters.

    I learned quickly to use torches for wayfinding when mining. On my way away from base, torches always go on the left wall. So when its time to return, I follow torches that are now on the right. Intersections with the main path get a torch on the floor in the center in my overly strip mined areas. I try the same theory with these massives caves but its a bit tougher! 😅

    I find it worth noting that if you're mining in the Nether, and you have Mending on your tool, the quartz deposits are plentiful and give a good amount of XP back, so if your durability is running low, you can hit the quartz for at least a little renewal. Also, a diamond pickaxe with Efficiency V will tear through Netherrack like a hot knife through soft butter, so you can really clear a lot of space very very quickly... (see above about durability though!)

    I found that there was enough xp from the gold and quartz to keep my mending pick from breaking while I branch mined an absurd portion of the Nether. Explosives in the Nether seem to make a huge lava mess that eats good blocks and takes more time to clean up than an Eff V pick. One wrong step and you set yourself on fire. It is probably better above the lava lake level, but ancient debris spawn rates are lower there. I would love to see a sculk farm on the Nether roof. Basalt is by far the fastest generated material to feed a sculk catalyst. The bottleneck on other generated stones is the flow rate of lava. In the Nether, lava flows like water. This means that basalt can generate much faster in the Nether than stone or cobblestone in the overworld. An Enderman drop-killer can be constructed on the roof of a warped forest so that it feeds a sculk catalyst & basalt farm. Pistons can feed a steady stream of fresh basalt, as the drop-killer feeds a steady stream of xp. I think that a mining system like the 2-piston Silk Touch stone farm could be used to gather the sculk-or a similar system.

    My personal favourite way to netherite mine is to dig a 2 by 1 hole. The go back along it with an efficiency 5 (although I think 4 also works), instamining the netherrack along the walls 5 blocks deep. You get to cover an 11 block wide radius very easily. Because you can just hold A or D along with left click and take out the row. Nice and easy. And you don’t have to fiddle around with beds or grind for TNT.

    I like digging a 1x2 tunnel until I hit a lava lake. I'll then go back walking sideways and clearing out a 1 block high swarth of netherrack, and then head back in taking out the blocks on the other side until I reach the lava lake again, where I'll either turn 90 degrees or make another parallel line about 10 blocks over.

  • @Moriibund419

    This is super late but you are doing the bed method slightly wrong. You want a block directly in front of your feet as that is where the blast damage is calculated. You can basically dig a 1 wide hole at head height and when detonating the bed take almost no blast damage, you can sometimes still catch fire if you don't use a resistance potion though.

  • @williamjones5334
    @williamjones533410 ай бұрын

    Netherite's resistance to fire also extends to durability, by the way - netherite armour doesn't lose durability if it absorbs fire damage for you (from fire, lava, campfires, etc.)

    I’m not sure the math actually works out for chunk borders mattering; you get a chance at two different veins but it’s a smaller chance. Could be wrong though. And I prefer TNT for blast mining because it can ignite in a chain so I’m not near it, and it doesn’t start fires.

  • @ruemistressofyeets
    @ruemistressofyeets9 ай бұрын

    Late comment is probably invisible but ... my preferred method of mining ancient debris is to dig the same 2x1 tunnel as Pix does, but then I go back along each side of it and take out the blocks at head height as far back as my pick reaches. This exposes any debris blocks below or above that, and makes it easy to deal with lava (you can just take out a quick block in front of it so it flows into the hole). It also avoids leaving large spaces where things can spawn. It's a little more time-consuming, to be sure, but it's one way to get a bit more thorough coverage, since RNG and I are not friends and neither the TNT or bed methods seem to get me as much debris.

Mojang seems to be going the Blizzard/Diablo route and just nerfing the game to make processes worse in an attempt to solve “balance” issues that don’t exist. I prefer straight line mining in a large nether waste biome. I go until I hit a large lava pocket or a basalt delta, then I mine to the side for three blocks and then straight line back parallel to my first tunnel. Then just repeat back and forth skipping two blocks between tunnels. No costly TNT. No bed damage. Small lava pockets are easily dealt with or avoided by going around them. Hoglins can't spawn in a 1 wide tunnel. Of course this method is best when you have an Efficiency V, netherite pick-axe. What does everyone else prefer to do?

I go in one cardinal direction till I hit a large lava lake, then dig poke holes off it on either side every third block. I then extend the poke holes into branch tunnels till I hit lava again, and when I've run out of options for that direction, I do the same in the next cardinal direction. I've not updated to 1.20 yet, as I've not braved a bastion so far, and want to get one full set of netherite armour and tools to do so. Then I'll hit the update and get hunting for trims :)

    Het Pix? Don't you think that the 'how did we get there' achievement is practically impossible now that the darkness effect can only be gotten from a shrieker generated in the deep dark or the ancient city. We can't get it if we just placed the shrieker along with the setup. I mean it IS impossible to take an elder guardian and a shulker into the depth of the caves.

    I just made the videos I wanted to, I had a max of 150 subscribers for the first couple of years. Most of my views probably came from other people on the SMP I joined. After that, I started making small tutorials for details created with armour stands, and basic redstone contraptions. I got a shoutout from OMGChad and things grew very quickly for a few weeks, then slowly again until one of my 'One Chunk' build tutorials became very popular. KZread is all about slow and steady growth, then dealing with sudden spikes in activity if one of your videos hits suggested. The most important thing is to make the kind of videos you enjoy, because if you like it, there's probably other people out there who like it too

    Imagine saying something is unnatural in unrealistic sandbox videogame like Minecraft, like, c'mon, he mining for a resource that doesn't exist in real life in another dimension, basically analog of Hell 😂 Well, maybe you meant it's unnatural because lava should be deadly from the game design point. However, potions were added ages ago, so it's 'legal' and 'natural' to do this since the release of the game for over a decade now.

    Didn't realise there was now a template for netherite, what a pain. Why make it even more expensive

  • @Gxact

    @Gxact

    I think if it was introduced this way in 1.16 it wouldn't be so annoying, but the real issue is the exclusivity to bastions--making Netherite locked to random loot from bastions is sure to cause issues on multiplayer

  • @beng7845

    @beng7845

    10 ай бұрын

    It does make it a little more 'exclusive' but I don't mind this, though as you point out if on a multiplayer server it could be a pain if a pvp style server. If just with friends then you could feasibly trade for a template.

  • @gamingnscience

    @gamingnscience

    10 ай бұрын

    @@Gxactnot really. Unless you have a player who gets a thrill out of looting every bastion asap and then holding back the templates. Even if they try to sell it to you for an arm and a leg, they might only make a profit from the first sale, as you can make a copy of a copy of a copy. As soon as a single template is out in the public they will multiply and be eventually dirt cheap (comparitively speaking, they still cost 7 diamonds to make). Many servers supply a master template that everyone is free to duplicate. I consider being on a server to have higher accessibility to the template as only one person needs to find one.

    THIS is one of those changes (from upgrades to Minecraft) that I REALLY don't like! Maybe I am just "low skill", and while I understand WHY it was implemented, I always felt that; upgrading to Netherite was sufficiently challenging "as it"! (Not "very", but still takes a bit of effort.) Without the "Netherite trim", one could pursue or ignore armor trim ENTIRELY (or not) as one prefers. THIS effectively FORCES a player to use the armor trim mechanic. Still, excellent episode Pixlriffs! You explained it very well. (as usual) Oh, and I usually PLACE a "tougher" block (like cobblestone) in front of me to crouch behind when I use the "bed mining" method in the Nether. It's not a guarantee, but it DOES seem to be 'safer'.

    Wait.. you need a netherite smithing template to upgrade netherite equipment now? Why does Mojang insist on making this game as needlessly grindy for absolute no reason.

  • @Pixlriffs

    @Pixlriffs

    10 ай бұрын

    Their explanation was that it keeps players from upgrading straight to Netherite after acquiring diamond. Debris was relatively easy to acquire - and still is - but there's some additional risk/reward now. I think it also meant the Smithing Table mechanics stay consistent after the addition of armor trim, and it shows the smithing templates can be used for more than just cosmetics in future.

  • @williamludwick77

    @williamludwick77

    10 ай бұрын

    Also, while I'm not 100% positive, I believe this was their goal all along. Maybe not the exact implementation, but I think they wanted users to have to use the smithing table with some level of "difficulty" before being able to jump from diamond to netherite. Just think they weren't able to, or not ready to, implement it when netherite was initially introduced.
