Nethercutt's 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Vice President of the Nethercutt Collection, Cameron Richards, stops by the garage and once again brings with him one this 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom, a car so important, that in its heyday it was paid more to rent than the salaries of the movie stars who shared this Phantom's screen.

I also had the pleasure to visit there and I just could not leave, lol. There was so much stunning beauty in every direction and restored to a level rarely seen collectively like that, it was just hard to walk away from such dramatic visual appeal. But what catches you by surprise is how this interesting deep appreciation sneaks up on you. If you e been there, you know exactly what I mean. The "power brakes" you mention are derived from two brake servo patents; one designed by Hispano-Suiza and the other by Renault. It is a marvellous system and is a pre-cursor to anti-lock brakes. When correctly set up, the brakes are extremely powerful. The RR gearbox driven brake servo was used from 1923 until the late 1960s. Not without its issues though! In 1923, an experimental Silver Ghost fitted with the new brake servo system smashed the glass out of its Lucas headlamps at the end of Nightingale Road in Derby - needless to say Rowbotham and Hives, two key figures in RR history, were far from impressed at this ordeal! Eventually, the servo was engineered to work beautifully, albeit a complex and over-fussy design. They also have a tendency to fail when oil from the gearbox impregnates the clutch linings of the servo itself. For more information, please drop us an email.

I appreciate these cars back in 1930s. Beautiful cars needless to say. It makes me wonder how these companies survived during the great depression and still build a car and it made a name of itself many years later due to its beauty and engineering of its day. Love it !

The Spirit of Ecstacy was based on Eleanor Thornton, the Secretary and mistress of a very good customer for Rolls Royce John Douglas-Scott-Montagu the 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu. His son, the 3rd baron of Montagu of Beaulieu, Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu took his car collection (some he inherited some he bought himself) and opened the UK National Motor Museum in the grounds of his stately home, Beaulieu.
