Netflix's Avatar Has One Huge Problem

Фильм және анимация

The new Avatar The Last Airbender series on Netflix has a singular problem that might compromise this adaptation of the beloved classic. I hope this video ages like milk, because I want this show to be good, but I just can't have any faith in the project given my misgivings.

Aang taking his responsibility seriously from moment one is missing the point of his early character arc. ffs, for him it hasn't been 100 years, it's been a couple days since he ran away from the monks and his duty, as well as being separated from Monk Kiatsu. He shouldn't come out the ice ball as fucking Batman. I have no idea how anyone can be excited for this slop, but I keep seeing consoomers online creaming their jeans over screenshots

Two things I want to say: 1. When you mentioned the toning down of the characters flaws and more focus on action and plot, It reminded me of Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop. (From being more focused on action to even characters stories being reworked to be less complex than they were in the original anime.) 2. Them getting rid of the filler in Avatar sounds bad to me. While the OG series had it filler episodes, They were usually still important to the grand plot (The Beach episode has Zuko contemplating if he’s doing the right thing as well as establishing his relationship with Mai and even the episode where Sokka and Katara get sick introduced the Blue Spirit.) I’m sure they’ll incorporate some of these elements into the episodes but getting rid of them just as whole feels wrong to me.

Yes avatar is a character show not a plot show. The Plot has been done to death. We all know Zuko’s heal face turn by role 3 or at very least episode 12. This not a spoiler, it’s obvious and in plot shows it would be annoying but in a Character show it is fantastic. We know Aang is going to save the world, we how is going to do it but we see him becoming that person who can have the confidence to do it. Those little moments show us how this kids become Adults. How their childish views of what an adult is, changes over time. Ex being a man is not just be protective but knowing where he is supposed to be.

Yeah, the binge model works in high-continuity limited projects. But taking a long, multi-season beloved series that is, in my opinion, nearly perfect storytelling and cramming it into binge-watching is not great.

I'm never a fan of liveaction versions of animated works to begin with, but I definitely lost all interest when I saw how short the series is going to be. I understand budget reasons for its length, but the characters are the heart of the show -- not its plot --and losing all that character growth is just a goddanm shame.

One thing I feel like Netflix is also doing is riding off the high of One Piece being so successful while failing to see why that series happened to work which was that the showrunners worked with Oda and had a clear tremendous respect for the series. They understood they were not gonna be the anime or the manga but they were going to try their best to make a version that pleased fans but could also draw in newcomers and it worked because it was a genuinely well-crafted show made with passion. This live-action on the other hand is starting to make me wonder in the same way that Bebop did about who this is made for. Fans of Avatar have always been wary of any adaptation ever since Shyamalan and while this has the aesthetic down? It kind of seems to think that the only problems with that movie was that and the lackluster action and once again forgets that Avatar is beloved for more than just those two things so I don't know why this would appeal to them and non-fans if it sucks are either gonna be turned away from the show or they're just gonna watch the original.

I think the hellboy movies have a similar issue, where many aspects of hellboy and his stories are shifted to be a much more basic action movie than it is in the comics, because while the comics do have action, they’re far more often focused on hellboy’s character and destiny, his friends, or if it’s a short story the world he inhabits. The movies often simplify things into just being hellboy needing to kill the bad guys and not really having to struggle emotionally too much. The cowboy bebop live action series I think is another prime example of this. I really wish more adaptations would be willing to adapt the substance of stories rather than just the spectacle. Also great video as usual lol

If you think Hellboy doesn't "struggle emotionally" in the movies, then you either haven't seen them in a long time, or you've only seen the latest one (which is genuinely terrible). Guilllermo del Toro gets Hellboy, he's all about the innate humanity of monsters; the guy made a career out of it. But he's also a filmmaker and he knows that movies are a different medium from comics - they need to have tight structure and get to the point without meandering in the way that telling your character's story across decades worth of comics can get away with. Also, GDT is friends with Mike Mignola, who was involved in the planning of those movies. The Golden Army especially is one of the all-time great comic book adaptations.

@@SaiyanHeretic im well aware of the history of the movies, and I even like them, however they are not hellboy. They share surface level elements but hellboy the character is fundamentally different, where he is defined as an old man constantly denying the fate of his existence in the comics the movies have him defined as a mentally very young man coming of age, and falling in love with liz, the del toro movies are about a young man coming of age, compared to the comics more existential questioning. I suppose there is some substance in del Toro hellboy but its just not really hellboy, and mike mignola had many disagreements with del toro, especially with the golden army. Again I like these movies, however they focus far more on being fun action movies rather than the more exposition ridden and character focused stories with occasional explosions of actions you'll find in many hellboy comics. This is not to say I disagree changes must be made for the new medium, however many of the changes i think make the characters and story pretty fundamentally different

I feel like the word filler has lost its meaning. ATLA doesn’t have any “true filler” that only exists to pad the series, something like naruto and one piece, has “true filler ”, and there’s a very clear and obvious distinction between the filler and the actual plot, the episodes just happen and are never mentioned again . In ATLA even the least plot relevant episodes still have an impact, most episodes get called back to at least once, and are clearly intentionally put there to say something. True filler can easily get removed and not effect jack shit, hell the show is better without it since the show would be back on the correct track , but the second anything is lost it’s no longer filler, if any character development, pice of world building, etc is lost it’s no longer filler. It’s starting to feel like anything that isn’t a huge spectacle is called filler. /s an episode where the main character reminisces about their parents on their journey to avenge them, sounds like filler to me. An episode where the MC goes on a date with their love interest,FILLLER. God forbid we tell the backstory of this important side character, cuz that would be fillller. /s Do you see how ridiculous this sounds.

I strongly disagree that toning Sokka's sexism means he no longer has preconceived notions that need to be challenged or that Aang being more focused on completing his mission means he's no longer going to have immaturity to overcome. There are a lot of trailers and clips that show Aang being immature and people like Bumi lecturing him about his duties as an avatar. The Netflix model does create limitations for series but that doesn't automatically mean character growth is destroyed because its not being done a certain way.

I don’t think we are saying there is no character growth, from the show runner’s comments we are hear that it’s going from a character driven show to a plot driven show. The plot is as old as time. Zuko becoming a good guy is painfully obvious in a plot show but in a character show it’s just great storytelling. You rooting for him by episode 12, not to get the Avatar but to get the peace he so desperately needs.

We also see these crimes in Netflix's animated works too. Notoriously, we see how much was skipped ahead in Voltron: Legendary Defender to the point that the rest of the series suffers, and this mentality bled into other animated shows, like Glitch Techs or the infamous "Netflix Anime Hell", where an anime has to go through a long wait period to deem it fit for the platform long after it's announced. Even as something as serious as Bojack Horseman or Inside Job don't even really take the time to flesh out the characters because they are contending with Netflix's practices as Big Mouth and Cocomelon thrive, not having to worry about an overarching storyline.

The more I hear from the showrunners, the more worried I am about this adaptation. It's like they don't get it, like they only watched the badass fight scenes and are prioritizing getting as much of that into their project as possible, while sidelining all the emotional depth. People love Avatar because they love the characters first. If all it took to be loved like that was looking cool, then the DC Snyderverse wouldn't have collapsed. I have no problem with an adaptation taking liberties, but if you're going to miss the heart of the original work so thoroughly, then what are you even doing? No wonder Bryke walked away.

But the last straw was when I heard they are making Zuko actually fight his father in the Agni Kai. Man... That scene was so powerful and impactful by NOT showing us what exactly happened when Zuko got the scar. But of course they wanted ACTION, ACTION, ACTION and MORE ACTION so they felt the need to include the whole fight. That's it. They only want amazing fights and bending VFX. Nothing else matters.

Lu Ten is having a seeing what the war is doing to his usually kind hearted Father and the people around him. He is not liking it but doesn’t want to go against his father’s wishes. I know this wasn’t discussed in your video, but another issue with Netflix’s Avatar is the casting: while it’s good that the casting avoided whitewashing this time and it’s overall full of Asians and Indigenous people, the problem still lies in the casting of Sokka, Katara and Princess Yue, played by the actors whose skin colors are lighter than the three aforementioned characters. For more information on this colorism issue regarding Netflix’s Avatar, see Professor Flowers’ video “Yes, Dark Skinned Erasure Is A Problem. Here’s Why.”

I thought you were implying that the writers were “scared” of the Twitter reactions and fan backlash. Modern writers are hyper-aware of social media and incorporate awful meta-writings to please the mindless mob. They are afraid that if they wrote Sokka as sexist then they will be accused of being sexist. That’s why the drama is so bland because they don’t want to get cancel by introducing something controversial. They’re not artist, they are corporate employees.

The thing that kinda bums me out So One Piece suffered from truncating a lot of its B plot and minor things because we are trying to shove 60 episodes of anime, into about I think 8 episodes of tv. Thats a lot of material lost even if the tone isn't too far off from what Netflix's writing strengths tend to be or at least is material that isn't just alergic to Netflix writeing. Bebop had it a little better in terms of run time because it had I think 10 episodes of an hour long each, so its compatible in length to bebop or isn't that much shorter than the anime, but the material.... jesus christ. Maybe stick to smaller brain anime with less challenging themes and complicated ideas. in theory Avatar should be perfect THey don't have to like... speculate on why people like X anime instead of Y for nebulous cultural reasons because its an American show and these are all ideas that we can quantify in marketing and taste pretty well. The themes and ideas arnt really too crazy, a child could basically pick up on whats going on even if they don't know what the word genocide means and are several years away from hearing that as a vocabulary word and the run time is pretty close 8 episodes that are an hour long vs 20 episodes of 22 mins, I think the Netflix show might even have a little more time. Cut some of the fat like the valley crossing episode and some pro asian casting choices and we have a winner! but they just insist on making low quality slop that just barely passes the bar for "acceptable I guess" Man... remember when we used to hope these things would be good instead of cheering for "Bad but could have been worse"?

To be fair though, the One Piece anime does drastically pad itself with filler; to the point that One Pace exists explicitly for the purpose of going through it in a more faithful manner to the manga. With the One Pace watch list, it turns it from 20 hours to almost half that in One Pace, and about the same speed in the live action. I think the Live Action One Piece serves as a pretty good “newbie friendly” or palatable introduction to One Piece; since barring the Marine subplot speeding the introduction of Garp, the changes serve to improve the flow of the anime. There is a caveat that it would have been cool to see Luffy and Sanji take on Don Krieg, but implementing Arlong as a persistent threat and presence early makes the transition into Arlong Park a bit smoother; and creates a bit of tension for the encounter. Granted, I’m someone who saw the Live Action first and the anime second.
