A little addition: That one comic about anime boom is making the rounds again on social media. One born of jealousy as major anime at the time is stealing away attention from more conventional superheroes (and taking a potshot at Disney, who else but John K?). Back in japan, the mangaka had to learn the hard way to never meet your heroes, who were very much responsible for the backhanded crunch culture discourse in the first place: the increasing demand meant that they had to work harder. WBD years later would adopt a familiar, yet lethal practice which will also likely hurt both subbers and dubbers alike.

As a sub fan who finds dubs unwatchable, I completely agree. People prefer dubs for all sorts of reasons.

Piracy is what is saving any media from being lost but pretty soon we will spend 7000 years in prison for owning an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants sadly 😂

A little addition to the Geneon stuff: there’s an old ANNCast interview with Chad Kime, formerly from Geneon, that’s an excellent breakdown of what happened there. It was a lot of things, but they were massively overpaying for titles that hadn’t been made yet and ended up doing poorly (Heat Guy J being the most famous one, I think), the industry changing due to piracy and a shift in how fans bought series (3-4 eps per DVD vs season sets), the shutdown of major distributors (and the return of a shit ton of product), and just poor business decisions that were pretty common at that time. The Japanese licensors were also asking a lot for series because there was competition between Bandai, Funimation, ADV, etc. Those prices are pretty common nowadays, but there’s more corporate money in the industry than there was in, say, 2005. ADV apparently got Evangelion for a steal, compared to what they made, but no one could really afford what the licensor was asking for End of Eva except for Manga Entertainment. Sorry for dumping, the anime bubble is a special interest of mine and there are so many weird stories. Like the Toei DVDs of Slam Dunk didn’t sell because the quality was SHIT. Like bootleg quality apparently. But that was Tori’s fault, not Geneon’s.

Those were contributing factors but the actual downfall of Geneon AKA Pioneer began with former Aniplex head Henry Goto.

I don’t think I would be a big anime fan if it weren’t for piracy. I can still remember when my older cousin would download anime’s he’d think I would like and I would play them on my family’s shitty windows XP computer. I feel like now as companies get more greedy and careless with their properties, piracy will still be significant in the online space as it goes against the corporate treatment of these IP’s.

I know I wouldn’t be into anime if not for piracy. It’s the only way I became aware anime existed. If not for those friends who showed me all these shows and that some of them were ones we knew of and how they were so different from the versions shown on broadcast tv. If not for piracy I would’ve never known anime existed.

One thing I do gotta say, Higurashi absolutely did not get saved by Funimation. They never released the 2nd season stateside until 2016 and that was Sentai. Funimation would eventually do the new series in 2020 though.

Completely unrelated to anime, but this reminds me of how a lot of early episodes of Doctor Who were completely lost (as early BBC liked to destroy their tapes of shows), but were later found because of fans recording their telly.

Personally I'll never legally watch anime. I've been doing it since I was a Kid and now I've saved so much money, now knowing Crunchyrolls buisness practices and Union busting efforts yeah I'll never feel bad about it. I don't fear the all digital future of media consumption, what I actually afaird of if the future of ownership in an all digital future.

Piracy has been saving all types of media from becoming lost, not just anime. There are countless titles that I never would have known existed and would probably be lost to time if not for fan subs. I don't consider it piracy when the media in question has been out of print for over 20 years, is no longer licensed, never got an official English release, is not available on streaming services, etc. etc. etc. I wish this stigma around "piracy" would end. It's doing more good in the long run. Never paid for a streaming service and never will.

I'm old enough to remember when Chruncyroll was THE piracy site. And when I had to watch anime in 7 parts in 360p on youtube in 07. Hell that's how I watched one of my favorite shoes Saint Young Men back in college. I gotta dust the sails off but I'm ready.

Same. Although, I only watched there with my friend group. Otherwise, I opted for other services that weren’t CR. I preferred those other sites. Some of this friend group also joined me. CR in the pirate days was mostly what we used when we were all together.

Libraries around me actually still have anime DVDs! I just got a new library card and noticed the listings for Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha disks when looking at my options there.

I will also argue that in addition to uploading media we should be making copies of anime on physical disks. We don't know whats going to happen to the internet, especially where censorship or subscription gatekeeping is concerned.

It's not just anime and TV that is lost media, lisceve diesnt reney and the game is pulled, you can not play deadpool becase it's luscense was lost. The matrix online which has cannon lore after matrix 3 that is important to matrix 4, gone, fans are got a skeleton running but that's it. And there's a lot more

Fun fact you posted Media Blasters in company’s that gone are still alive. For I will not end nor will I have media Blasters ended that being said some of there anime isn’t available in my country actually probably most but still you get the idea.

Direct TV use to have an anime channel back in the day they had a basket ball show city devil I think (a guy that turned into a giant blue devil) and blood+ and I think Vampire hunter D. Then I got into anime for real when the streaming service netflix was new free and on the wii it had Mushishi, baka no test, queens blade and girls bravo I honestly miss translator notes and miss different color fonts.

Okay the actor that played the black cat was a surprise & horrible. I know its not anime related but what was the reason & everything that lead up to it? 🙏

What people fail to understand is physical media isn't the end all be all solution. Yes they're nice to have but eventually they'll be unusable because they also have an unpredictable expiration date. I have 2 Sakura Wars dvds from ADV that refuse to play all the way through, they're in good condition with no visible signs. I bought a blu-ray from the mid 2000s the other day and I had to return it because non of my players were able to read it. Again, no visible indications and brand new. Preserving media is to digitize them and keep them safe in our own collection on a hard drive and sharing them online. I have started to dump my anime, music CDs, and video games onto my hard drive recently for this reason. Disc rot is a serious thing people should take more seriously.

^ This. There's a huge problem with certain discs rotting due to poor manufacturing and inferior materials, even when still sealed and unused. The hardware to play them on will eventually fail too, and as time goes on there will be less and less parts available to fix them as well as fewer people with the knowledge and desire to do the repairs. Digitize, backup, share, and backup some more. That's the only way we can keep these gems alive.

all according to keikaku is still one of my favorite bits to pull today, and we would never had had that without the early online anime community.

I'm worried about streaming companies deciding they don't want to sell physical copies of shows in the future. This would make piracy the only way to guarantee that you could still watch a show after it gets removed from the service it released on.

There are still companies like Amazon who sell physical. I’ve heard Walmart is still gonna sell what the other stores won’t. I haven’t been there yet to see if it’s true for the stores near me. Target, I believe still sells, but I’m not a Target shopper. I might check out the bigger store to find out if this is true in my area. HiDive (Sentai Filmworks) still sells bds and for pretty cheap now. And should bds join the retro market like records, we’ll just have to go to retro stores. Stores that sell older things like records, tapes, etc. I asked in a Reddit thread about what stores exist. My area happened to have a Reddit group. There are also libraries as a possible option.

Am going to be real with you I was only able to watch the first two seasons of queen’s blade because of piracy I imported the blu-rays years later. Also there’s no way to stream the first two seasons legally only the ova queen’s blade beautiful warriors and queen’s blade rebellion think about that nobody can stream the first two seasons legally anymore. Also the anime never got released in my country England and like I said only queen’s blade beautiful warriors and rebellion are available to stream.

🏴‍☠️ 🏴‍☠️ 🏴‍☠️ I was always team pirate. Never left. Although, I did appreciate some of the convenience of streaming. Sometimes it worked out well. Other times though, oh, streaming always managed to disappoint me one way or another. So many issues on all the streaming platforms. Plus, I had to be team pirate because that was the only way I was able to watch so many shows streaming ignored or didn’t care for. Ones streaming had no interest in bringing overseas.

I don't do Netflix, and while it's probably available on piracy sites, even if we were in the days of "full series dubbed & subbed home releases", they'd still never release Delicious in Dungeon that way. They'd be their own competition. And odds are it'll be treated the same way they've treated Little Witch Academia - not making it publicly available but penalizing anyone who even uses a GIF of the show.

I had some of the Electric Tale of Pikachu mangas as a kid. It definitely felt a little inappropriate once I read them.

The worst part about this situation is that all the fansub groups are dead, now it's just rips from official tlers. So if official tlers go bust or start putting out shoddy ai "works" there are no alternatives

Any series can resonate with someone and that means it should al be archived. I don't even known if I'll rewatch Do It Yourself, Taishou Baseball Girls, Moyashimon or One Outs but I hold on to them on a few chunky hard drives.

Anime is all over the place except there aren’t dubbing anime in my country England and if it was they would do it in London because the rest of us don’t matter apparently sadly.

@@AshParth560It started in 2006. It wasn’t legal until 2009. They were caught and had to make a choice in 2008. That’s when they got financial backing from Venture or whatever that company was called. It probably didn’t have a decent catalog until 2013 (because it all got nuked obviously when they went legit. They had to start from 0.) I don’t think it had a large catalog and became exceptionally popular like it is today until 2016. Then, I think the 1000+ anime number CR began touting came in the 2020s.

you may happy to know that little witch academia has english subtitles on the japanese blu-ray release. it’s expensive, much less so if you buy used, but worth it. fantastic work that one. the extra content is pretty nice too.

The percentage is actually closer to about 51%, when accounting for all films made between 1895 (when the Lumiere brothers invented the technology that made filmmaking possible) and 1950, and most of those were lost due to mishandling, destruction (whether by accident or design) or simply improper storage. Celluloid is a fickle and time-sensitive medium, and until "Cahiers Du Cinema" motion-pictures were actually considered a disposable mass-market entertainment medium, not considered art in the classical sense because there was no singularity of authorship... until the Cahiers Du Cinema cats came up with "Auteur Theory," the idea that the director is the "author" of a film because he's the guy who tells the cameras where to point and what to shoot. Wanna know why "Citizen Kane" is considered a masterpiece today? Thank Jean-Luc Goddard, Francois Traffaut and the rest of the folks writing and editing at Cahiers Du Cinema. And now I'm mad at David Zazlav all over again, for what he's been doing to Turner Classic Movies. The greatest library of film made before 1975, all in the hands of the failed-upwards moron who greenlit "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

I have watched all of the episodes of Persona 4 The Animation on KZread for several years when I was in middle school. However, it's a dub and it's good ngl.

Man, thinking about Geneon and the way you remarked on how you relate to it... you've made me have a lightbulb moment. There used to be anime we could buy on disc at Suncoast or Best Buy or whatever that did not air on TV or streaming (which didn't exist). I haven't stopped to think about that. It feels like everything is "on TV", so to speak, now. Discovering hidden gems feels less and less possible, unless a company starts distributing an old show. But even then there's a lot of fanfare and such around that now. I'm rambling. I like this essay a lot and think you've done great work here. As usual!

I believe in preservation for both the dub and sub of anime.

I'm a hundred percent sure I mention this everywhere I can, constantly mentioning it on youtube comments, twitter, bluesky etc. But I'll mention here again. This isn't a unique problem to America, to English Dubs of Anime, but to dubs of a lot of media in general. The as Gaeilge, as in Irish Language, version of Avatar the Last Airbender is lost media. It wasn't, as far as I've ever discovered ever released on DVD, it isn't a option on any menu, there's no way, anymore, to view it online. Netflix only shows the English Langauge version of Avatar. We don't even have a cast list available, unless you're personally familiar with the voices of As Gaeilge Irish Voice Actors then you'll never know who was in the show. And I've never find much more than a few seconds of it online, so finding it out that way isn't going happen either. Avatar isn't unique in this issue, The 2003 Teen Titans is lost. I've never even found a few clips of online. Only a advert that includes a image from the show exists. Johnny Test, Dennis and Gnasher, Tuff Puppy(which is a weird choice but Nick and TG4, the Irish Langauge channel, have a relationship that includes a Irish Dub of Spongebob, including the Original Movie). i believe there was a Danny Phantom Irish Dub too, but I remember it but if it did actually exist I can't prove it. Everything animated, and a number of live action Irish Language, shows are completely gone within a few years of being made, if a year at all. Only thing that stays around is a Spongebob Dub. Which started out "meh" and by the time I was a teen, so not watching, actually got pretty great. Most of this stuff is due to license agreements. But there's little interest in preserving the Irish Langauge dubs. Someone created a petition back in 2018 to ask for the license to be given back to TG4 so they can do a new airing of Avatar or a physical release but it didn't meet a thousand signatures. Someone uploaded a bunch of clips of this Irish Dub Avatar from like taping their TVs while it aired onto KZread. But you can guess how quickly it was copystruck down. I have like the audio from the Opening narration to the show, spliced it with decent rip of the English Opening and lined up the audio as best as I could. That's unlisted on youtube right now. But that's basically it for clips of that show that exists. Outside of Zhao talking to Zuko in Irish about the Avatar from early in the show. It was the episode that Zuko and Zhao dueled. I think its a shame, that whole situation.

They have been removing old ver of anime that was remade. Kenshin for example. I don't like the remake nearly as much so it's very annoying.

Good news, kiki's 1998's torrent was just put up last month, get it while people are still seeding [Trix] Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) [Dual Audio] [Multi Subs] (BD 1080p AV1). Unless you're involved in this release, which by the tone of your video it kind of sounds like you are, in which case thanks for the rip.

I almost wonder if anitubers have to speak about the topic this way. People are so pro corporations now. Or maybe these anitubers really are people who personally went all in on the all legit mentality and were happy enough with the convenience of streaming to be unbothered by the issues that still existed under streaming. Maybe Anthony really doesn’t know people still pirate and some of us never stopped. Still, the way anitubers talk about the subject always has me wondering if they have to frame the topic a certain way.

Very well done. When it comes to piracy, I'm largely against it unless it's the only option available. Pirating JJK, for example, draws viewer numbers away from the official release site that production companies look at, which can influence whether or not it gets another season. But like you said, if it's unlicensed, it isn't hurting anyone. That point in your video really resonated with me. I'm also in favor of it as a means of media preservation. Support the official release, unless there isn't one. Then support the unofficial one. I'm also worried about shows being lost in the move to Crunchyroll. D.grayman hasn't been moved over either. But you can buy the physical release. Media should exist in as many forms as possible, digital or hard copy.

Japan decides what gets a sequel and what doesn’t. They aren’t looking at foreign streaming numbers to determine that. Maybe if it’s on streaming in Japan they will look there. Otherwise, fans are expected to buy physical or merch to show they care about a franchise and want it to continue. Japan is old school in a lot of ways including this one. Japan likes that foreign love for their series overseas gives them extra money/support, but that’s all we are to Japan. Extra. The cherry on top. They still make content for Japan first. Foreign markets are more of an afterthought. Yes, even with CR / Netflix backing shows. And honestly, that’s okay. That’s the way it should be. Personally, I’m a fan because Japan is like that. I want Japan to make animanga for Japan first and not worry about what the world thinks. I want animanga to always be Japan’s thing.

@@Vomahanew Of course CR is gonna talk themselves up and direct people to their service. They’re a business. Netflix does the same. Even still Japan makes the final call and they will always mainly care about their domestic market. If the domestic market doesn’t like your favorite anime Japan might say no to season 2. Japan might listen a bit about foreign opinion because they’re working more with services to distribute anime worldwide, but we’re still only extra cash to them. An afterthought. That hasn’t changed. That’s not totally out of the ordinary for the past before CR’s time either. There were a couple anime that were only noteworthy and popular to foreign markets which Japan didn’t care about. Anime where they weren’t made for Japan, but for American or other western viewers. Exceptions, but they existed. At best, there might be more voice now for the foreign markets because CR, Netflix, and now others have bought the voice by being on production committees of certain anime titles. They’re still only one part of the committee for anime projects. The domestic market is still Japan’s #1. Everything else is secondary. Look at CSM. Western audiences loved that show! Yet, Japan did not or it wasn’t as successful as the studio was hoping it would be. The expectation being DS numbers. Whatever the case. A vocal part of the Japanese fanbase hated the anime and showed that by not buying any of the physical copies. No merchandise. As a result, the sold bds were low and there’s a possibility the studio may change out the director because of the Japanese backlash. I think some other Asian markets also were not fans of CSM and were part of the backlash. Though, mainly, the negative reviews were out of Japan. This is all despite all the glowing reception for CSM in western markets.

Can you do a video of hack dubs of the 90s and 2000s and see why people hate them so much.

I would argue that Crunchyroll IS Funimation, and they're wearing CR as a skinsuit to avoid the negative connotations of the Funimation brand

If ya pirate, that's on your end. I'm not involved with such since they will track your data. Hell, 10 bucks a month when I do have a job to spend it on. If the day comes when do allow A.I. to translate, I unsubbing. That's a me thing on all this. 🤷

And then, from the shadows watches Ninjala. A seemingly harmless kid's anime meant to be an advertising vehicle for a video game of the same name. Now stands as an unlikely hero of not only media preservation, but distribution. Directly uploaded by Gung Ho's staff themselves on thursdays, it's available to watch on youtube for free. After a season is finished, then it's gift-wrapped to a streaming service nobody's even heard of: HDiVE. But not a problem if you love obscure anime, you can already find the subbed anime practically anywhere now, making it the most accessable anime hiding in plain sight.
