That actually is brilliant. All those years putting their products in the vault. You would think that they knew Netflix would happen, only if they did, they would've done it first. I too wanna watch The Apple Dumpling gang and the old Kurt Russell Disney movies. Now, I can go and relive some of my childhood of watching movies that were made years before I was born.

They haven't made a decision about Marvel or Lucasfilm yet. Netflix is in discussions to continue that licensing but Bob Iger said they may consider a separate service for those properties or tie them into the Disney-branded one. They have until 2019 to figure it out so...

I read that Disney would pull Marvel and Star Wars movies in 2019, but that the licensing deal for the Marvel TV shows would almost certainly get renewed.

The only good thing about dedicated streaming services is that they don't have a contract. I've already gotten to the point where I pick up a service during the show I want to watch and then immediately drop it. So HBO--I get it for GoT, then drop it. Then pick it up for Westworld, then drop it. Same with Showtime, Starz, etc. Also, Amazon now has Amazon Channels, where you can add your subscriptions on to your Prime Video, and watch them all through Amazon's interface. Makes it a lot easier.

One of the few times where Marc has been off base- Stranger Things is like a late in the day Netflix phenom, they had plenty of shows that EVERYONE was talking about waaaay before that aired. Daredevil, HOC, OITNB, Kimmy Schmidt, Bojack etc all people RAVING. The Arrested Development hype they had for season 4 was HUGE as well

Main reason that Netflix keeps Defenders shows is because they don't work with the Disney image. They are MA rated and Disney still outside of the Marvel and Star Wars films has released a PG-13 and only 30 years ago or so finally was willing to have a PG rated film.

In Netflix case it's actually easier to produce their own content. They pay a fee every time a movie or show is watched, so if you binge Disney movies they're going to have to hand some of that subscription money over to Disney, but if you binge The Defenders they get to keep more of your subscription fee. If you're watching Stranger Things you're not watching other people's junk which pays for production. If they don't get to that 75% original content mark they're probably going to go broke. That's why Disney's service isn't loading up on other people's stuff and competing directly with Netflix.

I've been saying this for years: Eventually all of these streaming/browsing apps become $1 a month each and people will just pick the 10 or 15 they want a month and go with it... Or else Kodi/Roku completely take over, they find a way to sell advertising on it, and all these apps become obsolete.

When everyone gets an app, people will just stop using apps and start pirating more. You get to browse, get all the shows, and it's free. The quality of video may not be quite as good, but it beats paying $50 a month to watch all the shows you want to watch.

I don't understand why people are at all surprised by this move. Disney and espn have both had tv apps out for years now that not only offer live streams of their respective channels but on demand content of recent shows. with the move to cord cutters and streamers gaining momentum, it would be the obvious move to go from cable subscription add-on apps to full fledged content providers considering the decades worth of content both channels have locked up ready for the nostalgia obsessed masses and parents world-wide.

This is not just netflic or the internet issue. This is a social & cultural issue of over personalization which narrows your vision to a few choices brought to you by..X. We are watching the death of the commons unfold..

Back in the day Netflix did gave torrents and cable TV some real competition. For $10-$20 a month you could get most things you wanted to see. Now with literally EVERYONE wanting their own pay-for-everything streaming app, that same amount of service will cost $100+ again, just like cable. And yeah, a lot of it will die.

Disney has the right to do this, but me as a consumer ain't supporting this crap. I don't even love Disney properties that much. Don't they understand people use streaming to save money? I could care less about original programming on netflix because it isn't original. going out and acquiring good properties as a distribution house is one thing. making crap original programming to fill up your roster is quite another. the true innovation to netflix was that it was a good aggregator in the modern era like a real store for browsing. once they lost rights to the SC/Sony/etc catalogues their selection dwindled to the nothing sized netflix only library. people came to netflix to watch non netflix stuff and lingered long enough to try netflix content out. same thing was true of hbo and they've done well by their own productions. netflix has yet to prove the same and needs more anchor projects. disney creating their own cdn out of spite is hilarious to me as well but they have the money to squander so why not. netflix created their own cdn for better or worse and learned the hard way too.

made vs acquired is the sticking point here. original content is supposed to mean from script to film not just appearing at film festivals and gobbling up distribution rights. it has to do with quality of content and production value. yes they have some good original content but the majority that people associate with netflix were simply acquisitions and that means the talent making them isn't actually at netflix but acquired. rather large difference in branding

Disney will leave things like Rogue One and Doctor Strange on the service to entice people to sign-up when Last Jedi and Infinity War are exclusive to their own streaming service. Seems like a pretty straightforward marketing plan. I don't think new MCU/SW films will show up on Netflix, they just won't remove the ones already there.
