In not mad at all mepotism babies, but I'm mad at all teir parents and the adults in the room who enabled them and weaken industries and lessen projects by prioritizing connections against merit. Rome fell in part because of nepotism. It's an operational risk to give leads to people who haven't legitimately earned. I mean, everyone complains about how dismal many media industries are right now - why do you think that is? Heck, look at the Alec Baldwin ahooying. The armorer NEVER would have been hired if she wasn't someone daughter. A person is dead in large part because they hired someone WILDLY unqualified for the position. I don't hate them because they have opportunities *I* don't. I hate that they are stealing opportunities from the people who ACTUALLY deserve them, and then turning around and pretending they didn't take a more deserving person's place simply through the birth right of being born upperclass. Because outside of purely creative industries, nepotism And this pattern of giving important roles to people who in no way earned it ENDANGERS LIVES. Like, I can't fault for someone being born royalty, but don't run around trying to pretend you've slummed it like the rest of us and earned your place. That's lame and fake as hell. admit the system is rigged at the very least, but the vast majority seem to entrench themselves in the delusion that they earned it, and then encourage their fans to idolize them as if they're one of us (when they never were). The handful of nepotism babies who are self aware and acknowledge they got where they are more through connections than merit necessarily are a god send. The rest of them? Yeah, call me a hater. Cause those delusional self righteous spoiled brats who want to cosplay as commoners can get bent.

nepotism is a lot more common than you think, just not always in lucrative industries. Technically your parents give you a job at their family owned restaurant or coffee shop is nepotism.

idk i think there’s no getting out of this cycle. if good actors didn’t get the parts they deserve just bc they’re associated to another celeb it wouldn’t be fair, and at the same time if they do get casted they’re branded a nepotism baby and people start to look down on them. so it’s a damned if i do, damned if i don’t kind of situation. i do think maude clearly got the chance to audition bc she has the means to get a good agent who could get her such a major opportunity, but i don’t think she got the part bc of that, she clearly BODIES lexi.

I think what happened with Willow and “Whip My Hair” is the same thing that happened to Rebecca Black with “Friday” they were young and excited about music, got the reminder society hates tween girls and suddenly their dream became a nightmare. I’m glad they both got back into it, and that Willow stood up for herself. I think in that tween age a lot of kids experiment and parents try to get them to be committed to whatever activity they signed up for and idk people are different some can stick it out others do and it ruins their relationship with their parents a bit. I don’t have kids but from the interview it sounds like that was the fight that happened. The Smiths can afford it tho a stadium tour with Will. I. Am already scheduled, venues likely paid for and legal contracts vs a violin and lessons already budgeted and paid for by your lower middle family; one is more difficult to undue, the other might’ve been a financial sacrifice chosen out of love that’s now being dismissed.

I actually had no idea about Gracie Abrams. I found her on KZread about 2 years ago and just assumed she was a regular girl who made singing videos in her bedroom. Then I noticed a sudden increase in the production quality of her music videos and her music in general and wondered how she managed that, so this makes more sense

Wallows are probably popular because of Dylan Minette's fame from acting... i dont think they'd see the level of success without that fame, but im really happy it happened because they have many bangers and are helping revitalize indie for younger listeners. And their live shows are fantastic.

I disagree. All of their songs are amazing and they really care about the music they produce. Yes, I did know of Dylan Minnette as in actor, loving him I’m “13 Reasons Why” and “Goosebumps”. However, I don’t think him being an actor has much to do with the success of his band. Many actors have bands nowadays like Finn Wolfhard and Joe Keery. And we don’t see their bands blow up like Wallows have. Have I listened to their music and tried to get into it? Yes. Am I fan of their music? Not really. I love Finn and Joe, but their music isn’t for me. Wallows on the other hand is one of my favorite bands ever and I’d love them just the same if I didn’t know one of the members beforehand.

that is not nepotism tho. nepotism is the practice among those with power/influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs. the wallows had already been in a band together since 2011 (they were still in school) with another member that left later. just because one of the members (dylan) got fame from being an actor and consequently brought attention to the band, doesn't mean they are a product of nepotism or are nepotism babies.

Idk if Enrique Iglesias counts necessarily. He was in another country and changed his last name/went behind his parent's back to record a demo & get a record deal because he wanted to prove to himself that he could do it without his dad's influence. Of course, I'm sure the record label used his real name to promote his music though.

A lot of people don't know this but Thomas Bangalter's, the silver robot dude from Daft Punk, father was and still is a working music producer and songwriter in France. It was actually with his connections that they were given their first record deal with Virgin.

It's wild how many people are here actually defending rich propels right to cut in line in front of poor people. Like, no I don't personally hate them as individuals obviously. In the same way you can't hate white people for benefiting from white privilege. But if white privilege itself doesn't make you angry, if you're gonna tell people "don't worry about the fact what race you were born into will be one of the largest determining factors of whether you make it or not" , thats ignorant and directly enabled these injustices to continue People are really here trying to act like we should just ignore that the upperclass have monopolized nearly every aspect of our lives and refuse to share. I have to assume they're mostly young people, because I don't know a single person over 25 who is not legitimately *scared* of the fact our country and nearly every industry within it is being run by underqualified people who know the right people instead of having the right skills. i see gracie abrams as more of a lyricist who chooses to tell stories through her songs rather than make them catchy or popular , some of my favourite songs from her are older camden and rockland like the whole ep she just released i found it like a solid 8/10

If you get somewhere by way of nepotism or having a rich family you should be honest about it - it’s a huge advantage. And many that would be talented artists won’t make it bc they’re stuck at some crappy job trying to take care of their parents that slaved just to get them out of a place where they had nothing to eat. Where their family has been suffering from poverty for generations - it takes so long to dig out of that hole. It’s just unfair to pretend you got there with just your hard work when you had parents that threw thousands at you to follow your childhood dreams or had a friend that could get you signed or something takes away the huge struggle that smaller artists have to go through. Because of nepotism many other good artists are overlooked bc so and so’s dad asked if their kid could get the job. Rich people are really blind to how much their wealth and connections help them in life and what it means to really work and suffer just to be able to get to a point where you can work the job they have. And working that job the poor person would actually need the money - the rich person does not have to worry about sales , making mistakes. Just be honest about it if you’re a nepotism baby. Don’t pretend your experience is the same as poor peoples bc that is offensive.

I've been a fan of Gracie Abrams since 2019 and only found out she was a nepo baby like last year. I always assumed she was a regular girl who posted videos online and gained a following from it. It did bum me out for some reason when I realized she wasn't, but I still think she's an incredible writer with a unique voice. I seriously recommend anyone who is a fan of Taylor Swift to listen to her music! She has a similar writing style and is great at storytelling through her lyrics.

Have you heard Long Sleeves by Gracie? Idk, the reason Gracie is just a breath of fresh air, is that her music, especially the Minor EP sounds quite DIY. In a good way. I mean I guess not in the way that a lot of music is DIY. Her music just has a great use of space and in turn atmosphere. On Minor, it just feels like a girl and her piano. Idk how many big name producers worked on that project. But it feels very intimate. Her lyrics feel really personalised. Most of her fandom ig handles are just individual lyrics from songs. She has a way of saying things so it isn’t just “damn we broke up, I sad” And also, one of my pet peeves, that my favourite artists always seem to do. Is like, never grow. This Is What It Feels actually seems like an evolution of Minor. It’s more folky. It’s more “folklore” actually and I really like it. She has a pretty soothing voice, and it works for her lyrical style. Also, Older is gorgeous, if you want to check out that song too. But yeah she isn’t reinventing the cheese wheel. But imo she’s making really great music within the genre. But yeah I am biased, cause I do absolutely think she’s the bees knees!

All I can think of is how jealous I am of potential classes they took since they were young. I'm old and could only afford one songwriting class six months ago (meant for kids that's why she charged less than other teachers.) I think that's also why they are as talented as they are. From a young age they honed their craft and vision. They studied and learned from the greats.

i have a theory that The Strokes are so good not only because individually they’re all great musicians but also because both Julian and Albert Hammond Jr. went to Le Rosey where they were most deff taught by super talented music teachers who encouraged their exploration of sound and such. you don’t have your parents pay $100k a year for boarding school and not use that huge ass music conservatory Le Rosey has. Phoebe calling them industry plants is her own self deflection. there’s nepotism and then there’s industry plants, which are two different things.

I do not have any connections in the industry and i'm not crazy rich either by any means. I think you're gonna make a really fulfilling career, just remember to keep your main focus on making the best art you can and don't worry too much about the advantages others have had. So you should encourage someone to willfully be delusional about the realities of the industry they are attempting to break into, because otherwise you would literally start crying with how deeply unfair it is? F*ck that. Be aware of the systems that control your life. Talk about them. Criticize them. Demand they improve. You don't roll over and bury your head in the sand because the reality is VERY unpleasant for those of us not born with a silver spoon (and things are getting Bleeker by the day thanks to the wealthy *continuing* to take more than their fair share in nearly every avenue of society lately) Going into the record industry not being aware of how the industry works is just flat out bad advice. You can't become jaded and allow the desire for success to overwhelm the art, but it's irresponsible to tell someone to ignore the realities of the industry in which they work.

I spiritually cry and listen to I miss you, I’m sorry and 21 by Gracie Abrams about once a month. Camden and Older are good for wow I just woke up and I hate my life and I need cold water moments too 👍 I haven’t seen Gracie ever use her platform inappropriately/irresponsibly or put down other artists so I dont look down at her nepotism. I see her as a girl who wants to sing and tell her personal stories. A large portion of her discography has been co-written and produced with her longtime boyfriend as well.

I find nepotism such a hard thing, because tbh I think money is more important than your parents' job. My dad's a music producer here in my country, who does mostly artsy-jazz and classical music. If I wanted to get into the music industry, it would be so much easier for me than for others. However, my parents are not rich, so I'd still have to make money to pay for studio sessions and such. If your parents have a lot of money, it would be even easier to get into the entertainment industry, 'cause you can just buy your way in. I don't think you can judge someone for their parents, except if they have zero talent and are still famous. Idk, I just find it quite a difficult...

Should being the younger (or older I guess) sibling of a celeb count as nepotism in general? I’d never seen Janet Jackson that way, but I always saw Jamie Lee Spears (also fuck her) like pure nepotism. I feel less that way Solange and iffy about Elizabeth Olsen, but Elle Fanning gives me straight nepotism vibes. Like if they were extremely young when their sibling was successful they grew up with fame around them, but if they were fairly close in age with no prior fame connections I’d still think they’d need to earn their success like Hollywood execs wouldn’t be too excited or interested unless there was something really there. Elizabeth kinda working with her sisters, not keeping it up and coming back to take on the more adult drama roles with “respected” filmmakers feels more earned because as much as I love Mary-Kate and Ashley they were more known for the feel good entertainment which doesn’t translate to drama (unless you like Lifetime movies, I can get into it _yuh_ )

I do feel like it counts, especially with Elizabeth. She made a name for herself with her own skills and talent that's for sure, but her sisters were SO famous they had like an entire empire. So she definitely had more opportunities and connection because of that. But she has definitely worked hard to earn everything

I think Janet definitely benefited from being a Jackson, but if you really think about it, she and Michael - of course - were the only ones out of all the siblings who managed to make big solo careers. I'd say Solange also 100% benefited from Bey and from their father being the manager of Destiny's Child as well as both of the sisters. She was, however, very smart to go in an artistic direction that is very different from Bey's, to avoid excessive comparison between the two. Jamie Lynn, Elizabeth and Elle are just full-on by-products of their sisters.

I was thinking the same thing. For example, Finneas O’Connell (Billie Eilish’s brother) has his own music career, which is probably more popular because of Billie. BUT, he did help Billie write a lot of her music, so is it really nepotism?

Hey hey SongPsychos, i need some advice: Last year, my older sister had a song blow up on tiktok that got her signed to a major label. She has been killing it out on a country tour and her following has been growing ever since. As a 24 yo aspiring artist who has been working on my music, cartoons, & filmmaking for almost a decade, I’m wondering how to approach my career with a newly famous sister. Simply hanging out with my sibling now puts me in the room with people that can open doors for me faster than I could ever dream of before. She is also most likely going to be a supportive sister and repost my stuff on her larger platform whenever she sees it, so my questions are: - Should I just say fuck it & embrace the seemingly inevitable nepotism? Would it be dumb and prideful of me to purposely avoid riding the coattails down an easier path? - Or do I attempt to first build up an audience on my own with new social media accounts from zero since I’m trying to enter entirely different genres & creative fields anyways? I think it’ll look like nepotism either way, but I feel this need to prove to myself that I can at least make an artistic spark with 2 twigs by myself before accepting the figurative lighter handed down from my sister. Idk I would love to hear your thoughts and thanks for just reading if you made it this far. ✌🏻

do both tbh, let your sister promote your music, but dont always reference her - that way you can distinguish your own unique identity, whilst also gaining from the nepotism, obviously reference her sometimes, e.g when you're actually hanging out, or when she releases something new - but dont make your whole identity "so and so's sibling"

I think there's definitely a difference between nepotism and proximity to fame. There's a difference between your sister getting people to do favours for you, manipulating things, forcing people to help you and being close to your sister and letting some of her clout help you. Opportunity is different from malicious manipulation, yk? But also, I'm just some guy on the internet, do what works best for you as a person.

Whats interesting is that Albert Hammond Jr didnt know Julian Casablancas and they found eachother when Julian was looking for one last guitarist to join the band so that he didnt have to play rhythm guitar. They met eachother through a friend when Julian was asking around for a guitarist. Long story short, they didnt know eachother through their parents even though both fathers were successful in the entertainment industry and mothers were both models. [EDIT] Actually they did know eachother from boarding school before they rekindled their friendship. Still weird their parents are so similar though.

No, they had met before, they went to boarding school together. Later, Albert moved to NYC and got back into contact with Julian- just around the time the band was looking for another guitarist.
