The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.
Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

A draw due to insufficient material is pretty rare. Usually the grandmasters declare a draw well in advance and Agadmator explains why both players declared a draw. I like how they played the game out until the very end.

It's pretty classy that Ding allowed the last moves to be played, but in this shorter line that skips the routine drawing endgame. Not that it matters, but it is pleasing to look at.

There is a rule in this world chess championship that player cannot agree to a draw before move 40. Both players knew the game was going to end in a draw by at least move 39 but decided to play a few more moves to end with naked kings.

Some Iranians say Alireza (and Mohammadreza?) Firouzja is a traitor to Iran. (Source: xbw4kx ) I have no idea if that's true (anyone have ideas?), but: What do Daniil & Hikaru have in common? Both betray their country for Magnus. Bobby Fischer would agree with everything here. T0 - Now, Daniil & Hikaru are traitors for Magnus but not Norway, which was never the villain. Magnus is the villain (but not a supervillain like Hans Niemann. cf Megamind). T1 - Hikaru Nakamura is a traitor to the US for BASELESSLY siding with Magnus Carlsen over fellow American Hans Niemann. There's an episode of American Dragon Jake Long where Jake is accidentally sold by h friends. Here, Hans is intentionally sold by h compatriot. (Hans is Jake. Rotwood is Magnus.) American Dragon Jake Long Meet American Traitor Hikaru Nakamura. They're both Americans of East Asian descent. Lol. T2 - Daniil Dubov is a traitor to Jews & Russians for siding with Magnus over fellow Jewish Russians Ian Nepomniachtchi & Sergey Karjakin in the 2021 WCC. T3 - Will you be surprised if Daniil & Hikaru change federations to Norway? T4 - Garry Kasparov cheated fellow Jew Judit Polgar in the 1994 Linares. This makes Garry T4.1 - a traitor to Jews since Judit is Jewish T4.2 - necessarily not GOAT / MTOAT because you can't be valedictorian if you cheated T4.3 - a mentor of Magnus Carlsen who similarly cheated Alireza Firouzja, Daniel Danya Naroditsky & Ian Nepo Nepomniachtchi. SAYNOTO2900 GOD BLESS AMERICA. T5 - Also some Americans or Philippine people / Filipinos / Filipinas are traitors if they don't consider Wesley So the REAL world champion for the period 2019Nov - 2023Mar. (Kidding...sort of.) - T5.1 - Or worse, they consider Wesley So a traitor for moving to the US when Eugene Torre supports the decision which was practically forced due to the corruption of Philippine chess president Prospero Pichay Jr who was somehow re-elected in 2022 July despite being convicted of graft in 2022 June. Probably the same reason Arianne Caoili (Levon Aronian's dead spouse) left the Philippines for Australia. Try telling Levon that Arianne was a traitor. - T5.2 - Oh also 1 person did tell me e didn't like Wesley So because of what Wesley So said to h bio mom Leny So. Leny So & Prospero Pichay are HUGE traitors to Philippine chess. F()K LENY SO. F()K PICHAY. Source: 0J3K-3_xCzY Wesley So is like Bobby Fischer in a good way. Magnus is like Bobby Fischer in a bad way. SAYNOTO2900 GOD BLESS AMERICA I challenge everyone to find something here that Bobby Fischer would disagree with. Why are Magnus and Garry compared to Bobby Fischer? Can you be valedictorian if you cheated in school? - Garry Kasparov cheated Judit Polgar in the 1994 Linares. - Magnus Carlsen cheated Alireza Firouzja (2019 blitz WCC), Danya Naroditsky (2021 & 2022 lichess) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2021 WCC). Wesley So is like Bobby Fischer in a good way: W1 - Each 'is a prodigy, had a rather dark childhood and is American', but they have great moms. (This also applies Beth Harmon and Hans Niemann.) W2 - Betrayed by their home country, they got citizenship elsewhere. W3 - 1st American world champions: Bobby was 1st American-born WCC. Wesley So is 1st WC (and played for the US at the time but wasn't citizen until 1.5 years later). W4 - Unjustifiably lose their world titles 3 years after gaining them because FIDE was favouring a European over them. W5 - Hate chess and love 9LX. W6 - Have a lot of friends from the Philippines including Eugene Torre and Lotis Key. W7 - Met a corrupt president in the Philippines. Bobby met Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Wesley So met NCFP president Prospero Pichay Jr. W8 - Correctly accuse Tigran Petrosian of cheating. Magnus is like Bobby Fischer in a bad way: M1 - Ra()st against Americans & Jews (source: ZS4ZPF ) - M1.1 - (Bobby is kinda like Sergey Karjakin though: Has the 'right' to discriminate in the sense that they're born the nationality they're discriminating against. What's Magnus' 'right'? Magnus can discriminate only against Norwegians and maybe gentiles.) M2 - Likes 9LX but never really played it M3 - Is mentally unhealthy M4 - Unrelated: European citizens of Nordic countries. Beat a Russian in their last WCC which was controversial: Magnus cheated Nepo, and Bobby resigned a game. P.S. Please help get Wesley So on Lex Fridman's podcast. See xcdhgq

Also is Wesley So in a secret relationship with Carissa Yip? Is Wesley So the most inconsistent player in terms of tournament results? I challenge everyone to find something here that Bobby Fischer would disagree with. I think it's consistent that Wesley So's been performing so-so in the 3 events between the 2022 Olympiad and the 2022 chessc*m global championship & 2022 meltwater finals, namely 1 - St Louis' Chess9LX 2 - US Chess Championship and 3 - FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship, despite having been 1 - 2nd place in 9LX 2021 2 - then-reigning and 3-time USCC and 3 - Inaugural and then-reigning WFRCC The reason is that Wesley So started a secret relationship with 2021 women's USCC Carissa Yip at the Olympiad. (They met at the 2021 USCC.) My basis: A. These events at the Olympiad: 1 - Look at Carissa's Twitter header. It's a photo of just Wesley and Carissa (and Leinier Domínguez Pérez and 1 other). 2 - You can see Levon Aronian was being Wesley's wingman when they were teasing Carissa about castling (pretty ironic given what happened later at WFRCC, but well I guess it goes to show how little preparation Wesley did for the 2019 WFRCC yet still beat Magnus 13.5-2.5). You can see Levon even makes a 'mistake' in saying that when you castle, the king goes 2 squares, which allows Wesley to say 'unless it's chess960' to flex being the inaugural and then-reigning WFRCC. (Levon also probably has a soft spot for Wesley because Arianne Caoili was Filipina. RIP.) (Btw, Wesley is still the WFRCC. Hikaru is just the rapid WFRCC. Wesley never lost the title to Hikaru like how Bobby Fischer never lost the title to Anatoly Karpov.) 3 - There's a Tagalog interview with FM Deniel Causo where Wesley was asked about a 'special someone'. (Btw, Tagalog interviews of Wesley are pretty rare, so for me I think they're pretty important.) This interview probably gave Wesley a wake up call to finally start a relationship with Carissa. B. And later in the USCC Wesley talks about how teenagers always play for a win because they don't have family, bills or GIRLFRIENDS. Wesley laughs at the girlfriends part. C. At the 2021 USCC closing ceremony Carissa admits to being 'star-struck' by Wesley (and Fabi). Take a look at Wesley's reaction to that. Lol. Additionally, look at how Nazí Paikidze reacts. Nazí probably knew about Carissa's crush on Wesley and was being a wingwoman for Carissa by noting Wesley's reaction to later tell Carissa. So what I guess is: D. At the Olympiad, they got together, but, because of their 1 decade age gap, they decided to keep their relationship a secret. 5 years later, Carissa will have just graduated from Stanford, and their ages 19&29 become 24&34, the minimum age when the half your age plus 7 rule is satisfied. (Look up wf0pkg for the formula.) E. But still, since it was both of their 1st times dating, they were very distracted eg talking on the phone all night. Notice Wesley hasn't made any FB posts between the start of the Olympiad and the end of the CGC. I guess this is because the time Wesley would've used for FB went to talking to Carissa. F. We don't see impact on Carissa because Carissa stopped playing chess for awhile, in particular didn't defend at 2022 women's USCC for studies at Stanford. But, well, we did see much impact on Wesley in placing only 1- 5th out of 10 in 9LX, 2- 6th of 14 in USCC and 3- 6th of 8 in WFRCC The WFRCC underperformance was the last straw. It was like the Beth and Cleo thing in The Queen's Gambit. Wesley and Carissa decided to slow down their relationship. And then voilà Wesley wins $200,000 in the CGC and can now fully celebrate with Carissa. G. After Meltwater finals, Wesley and Carissa are celebrating a lot more. H. Finally, Wesley said in an interview with Dina Belenkaya during the FIDE Grand Prix ('I am not afraid of Hikaru' - see lJI6xuDHn68 ) that Wesley's mom, Lotis Key, didn't want Wesley to use Twitter. Who else but Carissa (your new girlfriend/romantic partner) could've convinced Wesley (yourself) to defy Lotis (your mom/parent) ? TL;DR / Sources vylMndunCa8 CzxChm95YxE jBTt8RezzM4 z9x0nh z9x0td zh98jg P.S. Please help get Wesley So on Lex Fridman's podcast. See xcdhgq

@@stanmarsh9742 1 - What's your opinion of WFRCC lowered time control from classical 2019 to rapid 2022 AND calling 2022 WFRCC as 2nd WFRCC instead of 1st rapid WFRCC? How was it not a conspiracy against Wesley So to get Hikaru or Magnus as WC? 2 - Would you say the same thing to victims of Alejandro Ramirez? Magnus Carlsen is almost as evil as Alejandro Ramirez. 3 - I take Ritalin and pristiq for my ADHD-PH. Eric hansen has ADHD too. So you're discriminating against the mentally ill? 4 - Did I say anything incorrect or something Bobby Fischer would disagree with? Wesley So IS the world champion.

Choosing a variation that Nepo has played as White was pretty risky if there wasn't a prepared novelty. Ding did not challenge Nepo enough so the game is drawn.

The live coverage said Ding probably didn't prepare for games where Nepo played the opposite color. So this was most likely just bad luck for Ding. Time trouble has been plaguing him in most of the match. This game was no exception.

I am not polished in my endgame stuff, I assume there is a standard line where Black forces White into giving a stalemate or giving up the pawn in zugzwang?
@d4slaimless
Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Unless the side with the pawn gains opposition and forces other side to free the way for the pawn, it is a draw. Especially true for side lines (a and h) - the easiest draw. Nepo would just block the pawn and there was no way for Ding to force black king out of the corner. White king would need to be ahead of the pawn to prevent black moving into it. But as you see black king have enough space to move and block the pawn. So eventually it leads to position with pawn on h7 and black king on h8. And here it is either stalemate or black takes the pawn.
Thumbnail is very cool ! 👏😃 Ian be like : hey, bhagwaan ! Bas aaj kay exam mey paas karaa deynaa ! Blunder-vlunder sambhaal leynaa ! Black pieces sey kheyl rahaa hu, mujhpar thodaa toh reyhem karnaa ! 🙏😦 Ding be like : arey, yaar ! Saarey kay saarey out of syllabus questions ! 😐🤦♂️
Ding has got to win a game as black if he is to have a shot at this WCC. Both of them are extraordinary white players but Nepo seems to be better with the black pieces. Ding has to pull a miracle in the next game

I’ve been a little disappointed in Ding. On the other hand, Nepo has solved his blunder issues from the last WCC, so good for him!

I've been happy to see Nepo bounce back mentally after his previous loss to Magnus. That's why I've been rooting for him. If Nepo wins this time and if he faces Ding again in two years then it will be Ding's chance to bounce back mentally.

There was a nice meme on the internet - when you prepare the whole night for the upcoming game, and your opponent then plays Kf8.
I think Ding has shown in this match so far, that he can outplay Ian, and that he lacks confidence.😥
Ding needs to borrow Rapport's salmon coloured suit jacket for the next game lol
I could never playing the same opening more than once when there are only 14 games or so. It would would seem with the amount of time they had before the match.if I had that much time I would at least 3 times as many prepared
What’s on preparation leak ? , is it same .?
Ding resigns the whole game please. Unmatchable.

I thought you will comment on the news that Ding did not get to meet Rapport after this match. Is there a chance that he feels his preparation leaks through that angle? Just curious

The weight of the winner this year will be a lot. They will be the world champion but not the number one player.

Not completely voluntarily: there is a rule this WCC stating that players cannot agree to a draw before move 40. Both players would have agreed to a draw before that without the rule. I guess since they figured they had to make a few more moves they decided to make a couple more to end the game like this.
Why does it not work to push the pawn

Can someone explain to me why Ding sacrificed the pawn on his last move instead of moving his king up one square?
@sasukepran

Because you cant kick yhe opponent king in the final queening square.. so it will be draw
Hello, 10:15, why would that be terrible?

You would lose your pass pawn. And lose your advantage after a few moves. Ding might have lost the game then.
Was there no way for Ding to try to push that last pawn?
@hfhryrbxhdyo
Жыл бұрын
A and H isolated pawn will not win as the king can block the pawn from queening
@jessejordache1869
Жыл бұрын
No, because Black can just put his king in the corner, move back and forth and there's no way to dislodge it. If white prevents black's king from moving out of the corner, it's stalemate. Get out a board, have white play kg4, and try it yourself.

You must’ve come across this scenario in your chess games unless you are a true beginner it’s something once you see it done you remember it so when the situation pops up in a different game you’ll know how to react
@turnbackthealarm

even if the white pawn is on c4, or d4 or e4 or f4 or g4 it cannot queen. That is because the more general rule in this situation is the white K needs to be BOTH Ahead of his pawn (should be on rank 5) and giving Opposition. as you can see the white K can give opposition but is not ahead of his pawn, hes on the same rank. In this particular situation with a or h pawn, you dont even need this general rule, a more specific problem has occurred: the black K goes into the corner and cannot be forced out it will stalemate. So even if K was ahead of his pawn, the specific a/h pawn problem occurs. So the other comments are correct, but even if it wasnt the h pawn the white K is still not far ahead enuf to force the pawn home.

@@BitJam Yes I figure Nepo would have to find a better move, but you still have to play the opening that got you the win. Drawing and losing with the white pieces does not win the WCC.
