The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.
Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

When d5 was played, seeing all of the commentators get confused and completely blindsided by Ding's calculations was one of the most satisfying payoffs I've ever seen. It felt like Ding channelled his inner Bobby Fischer by confusing everyone with what seemed like an innocuous and counter-intuitive move having considered other seemingly better lines just so that two turns later they all realized the net that was being thrown. Amazing game

Agad has on occasion completely derailed the video for up to 40% of the duration by showing some obscure engine nonsense that nothing short of Two 2900 ELO players blindfolded and drunk/drugged to insanity could play purposefully. Its fun every once in a while...like explaining how Fabi could win some weird bishop endgame from a video a while back... but it can really distract from the actual game at hand. The last time a World Championship chess match had 4 decisive games by game 6 was in 1995, during the PCA World Chess Championship match between Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand. The first six games of that match saw four wins and two draws, with Kasparov winning games 1, 3, and 6, and Anand winning game 5. 1995 wasn’t 40 years ago but math is hard.

@@travislizer9581 That queen around the pawn was not working. Anish Giri and Howell tried it live. After the knight check, there was one tempo missing. The White queen could never leave the black diagonale (like the queen go around the pawn as you suggest) because black will create a perpetual check. That's why the queen had to stay there first. The solution the master on TV saw (and the engine) was rook to B7, forcing an exchange of rook, the only defender of the black king. So when Ding played pawn D5 they could not understand it. But it was in fact the other solution sacrificing the queen while the directed knight now prevent the perpetual check.

Real chess fans enjoy your videos and explanations and learn a lot from them, just as stated by Alireza Firouzja himself and Carlsen's father. A poem on Chess !! The board is set, the pieces in place The game begins with a steady pace The pawns advance, the knights prance Strategies form, the plan enhances The bishops move on diagonal lines The queen, she reigns, the king, he hides The rooks castle, the opponents hassle Tactics arise, the pressure'll dazzle The players ponder, the clock ticks Every move, a moment to fix The tension mounts, the end in sight The thrill of victory, the fear of flight The board evolves, the game takes hold Each piece a story to be told The sacrifices made, the positions swayed The players fight, the game's parade And then it ends, the checkmate sealed The victory claimed, the fate revealed The pieces retire, the board is clear Until next time, the game will appear. Chess, a game of thought and skill A battle of wits, a mental thrill A challenge for the wise and bold A classic game that never grows old.

On a checkered board of black and white, The battle rages on with all its might, Each piece with purpose, each move precise, Strategizing, thinking, never thinking twice. The king, the queen, the rooks, the knights, The bishops, the pawns, all in sight, Each with a role, each with a place, Moving in patterns, with elegant grace. The game of chess, a war of minds, A battlefield where victory finds, Those who see beyond the present move, And plan ahead, with a steadfast groove. The game is not won with force alone, But with intelligence and tactics shown, The pieces dance, with grace and skill, And victory is achieved with a final thrill. Oh chess, how you challenge and inspire, Teaching us to think and never tire, Of the possibilities that lay ahead, As we strategize and move ahead. So let the game begin, with hearts of fire, And let the chess pieces never tire, For on this board of black and white, We shall fight, with all our might. -- ChatGPT

Found Qf7 and really panicked when I saw a1=Q, completely missed that the new queen would just hang. However, I managed to also consider the option of trying to trade the bishop for the strong knight where the pawn at h5 would be sufficient to assist the rook to deliver the checkmate.

There’s such a charm to this finish. The endgame pawn push of D5 is such a quiet brilliancy. As to format, “just the moves” is visible with any online PGN viewer. The only reason to watch a video is for explanations about why moves are good or bad, which means going into the lines.

I think it's better you make the recaps the way you usually make them. Extremely simple but at the same time very very informative. Another reason why I like your recaps is that you are the creator for more of the elderly people who have no time and patience to listen to people screaming when a piece is sacrificed. Be the same 👍
