I can't say I'm a huge fan of the whitewash look, but I can appreciate the stark contrast it gives 😊 I love watching your work come to life, and that top is just STUNNING! You are one of my inspirations to get into woodworking; please continue to do what you do! ❤️

I agree! I appreciate the work, but the white wash finish isn't what I would have gone with. I like white wash... but in this case the "stark contrast" actually detracts from the 1/2 sawn -1/4 sawn effect of the top. Again... love and appreciate the work! This is a strictly personal style opinion. Great job, Jay! ❤️

I was never a white wash fan, but have to admit I'm reformed, I love it. My dining room and lounge furniture has been white washed, with additional colours of Grey, blue and a touch of beige. It gives off a calming feel. My parents bought a desk (pine) for me when I was thirteen, I am now 60, I white washed it (that was a job and a half) it is now standing in a corner of the lounge which is used as an office, everything blends in.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that you love natural wood. This piece is astoundingly beautiful. Whitewash might have been better, but I still love the result! You seem to be getting more confident in front of the camera, your humor shines through. I giggled throughout the process. Thank you for all you do. 😊

I think the wood is beautiful but I would have preferred black instead of white. I think the black would have been a great contrast to the wood. Overall I think you did a wonderful job in restoring something that was very damaged and ready for the garbage heap. A job well done!

Beautiful wood! You really brought it to life! I tend to like darker stains, like a darker walnut or darker tones from that great wood on top and doors but that is just my preference. Yet I think the contrast is wonderful on this piece and you said you were keeping it...so I bet it will fit beautifully in your place having seen some of the pieces you have. Really should be a great fit! Loved the video as well!
Hi Jay, I believe the wood used for this desk is rosewood (my best guess, as I worked with some, donkeys years ago). The desk top for sure, and looks like the doors too, it is the groove pattern that exadurates the beautiful grain. There are couple different trees that are called rosewood because of the reddish tint, this one might be bolivian rosewood, maybe even indian cocobolo. The rosewood is red only in the centre of the trunk, changing to brownish hues and then very blonde wood closest to the bark. Was often used for building desks, tables, even pianos cca 100 years ago. I am no pro, so will gladly stand corrected if my guess is incorrect.

re: veneer query - what a great catch. I was going to suggest some type of fruit wood (eg cherry) from the color and hardwood grain appearance. Such artisanal surface working not possible on softwood, surely? Perhaps a regional craftsman used timber available from local orchards?

I am an old marquetrist, and the rosewood veneer sheets that I have worked with all had these exact colour shifts: pinkish, diferent shades of reddish brown and broad stripes of yellowish white. The door panels are seemingly from wood cut close to the roots, since the rosewood root veneers has occasional dark brown, almost black patterns. So yes, I agree too. It is most probably the beautiful rosewood.

I enjoy your videos, your skill and patience. May I suggest that instead of using a caustic rust remover where you have to use gloves, try Evaporust. It’s water based and reusable. Adam Savage from “Myth Busters” has a video on it that you might enjoy. He LOVES the stuff. I’ve tried it once and it worked fine.
I love watching your videos. I came across a hand carved chair someone had put out for garbage pickup. As soon as I noticed the carved chair back I grabbed it and brought it home. The town I live in was founded by Swedish immigrants. Many of them were furniture makers who made some beautiful hand carved pieces. Whenever I see a piece of furniture with a stamp on the back that says “ Maddox Table Company Jamestown NY” I grab it up. Sadly they closed their doors because none of the younger generations were interested in learning the trade. I found the most pieces when I lived in Germany. I grabbed them up before anyone else knew what a treasure they were. I also got the pieces really cheap. $15 US dollars for a chest of drawers in beautiful condition. Someone asked me why did you buy so much furniture. I laughed and showed them the manufacturer stamp. And they all said that’s where you’re from. I nodded my head smiled and said yes I am. I left out that they went out of business. 😂
Two hours long? I'd watch that. Looks incredible! It reminds me of the boho bedside table you carved.

Jay, you are a master of details! Fantastic job on this desk. Looks to be a mix of French Provincial and Chippendale. The varied wood grain makes this desk very eclectic, as these two styles were usually executed in dark stained solid hardwoods. I love the mix of styles on this piece, so unique! @@Flippingdrawers I’m not sure. You mentioned that there were some inconsistencies in the color of the wood, so that’s why you stained it. I think maybe I might have gone for painting or dark staining it black instead, so the beautiful top and drawers were still highlighted. But I don’t know, maybe that wouldn’t have looked as unique as your result does. The truth is I’m still pretty new to this and I’m learning so much from watching you, and AT Restorations, and Transcend Furniture and Mad City Modern. Again a wonderful piece lovingly redone, the way you take a small piece of wood to fit a broken piece you never see the patch done, amazing, my only worry is the thin wood shelfs and inside of drawer, they look like the might just break if anything heavy on them, but since you are keeping it then you will know what to put in so as not to break. The finish is stunning the sand blasting was a great idea. Well done as always hugs Dede xxx
