Negative Gravitropism | Demonstration

Ойын-сауық

Negative gravitropism demonstration showing how mustard shoots react to change in pot position.
Gravitropism is growth or movement response to gravity, observed in plants and fungus. Its is also called - geotropism. Just like phototropism, gravitropism can be positive or negative. To put it simply - positive gravitropism makes plants point same direction as gravity is puling - down, while negative gravitropism is directed upwards.
Plants, well, at least mustard, are ridiculously sensitive to light. Before landing on last setup version for this demonstration, I've tried: using direct light from flash, indirect light from flash (both on weakest power setting), indirect light from 3,5 W 2700K light bulb (lowest wattage I could find for wide spectrum light bulb). In all cases plants pointed toward light source. Though, response was a lot weaker, compared to positive phototropism video ( • Positive Phototropism ... ). I ended up using indirect light from 3,1 W red light bulb, since phototropic response to red light is normally masked by gravitropic response (nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/d.... For this reason video is desaturated. Light were places in front of plants but pointed away from them and towards the panel to diffuse light. Exposure times were 1 min 15 s with ISO 200 and f/8. Oh, and yeah, all of this was done in a wardrobe, with all gaps covered to avoid external light. It is a big wardrobe.
Plants on the right are control group.
Most likely reason why all motion ceases in the end - plants ran out of energy.

Dude! What if you place the pot vertically like you did here, but connect its base to a very slow rotating horizontal axis, synchronous to the plant's growth rate, then the plants might adopt a helical shape.

@@GPhase Considering that plants grow fairly slowly. I think a DC motor that is triggered to spin a wooden platform every X hour is enough.

So what you're telling me is that strategically orienting plants at different stages such that at a certain level they have to grow against their previous length vector, increases their net growth? Noice

An example for the remaking of bodies instantaneously is the perfect remaking within a few days of all the trees in the spring, which are far more numerous than all humanity, together with all their leaves, in exactly the same way as those of the previous spring; and the bringing into being, again like those of previous springs, all the blossoms, fruits and leaves of the trees with the speed of lightning; and the sudden awakening of the uncountable numbers of seeds, grains, and roots, which are the source of the spring, and their unfolding and being raised to life; and reflecting the meaning of "resurrection after death," the sudden raising to life at a command of the upright skeleton-like corpses of the trees; and the reanimation of the innumerable members of all species of small animals; and the revivification of all the sorts of flying insects, particularly those which, continually cleaning their faces, eyes, and wings, remind us of our ablutions and cleanliness, and caress our faces -the resurrection and remaking of all the members of this tribe within a few days every spring before our very eyes together with all the other species, despite being greater in number than all mankind since the time of Adam, provides not one example of the remaking of all human bodies at the resurrection, but thousands.
