I’m a war vet. It’s not a jab at military. He’s telling the story from different perspectives. In that part he’s speaking from the perspective of the suits that send them off to fight and how they view these men as disposable hence the name “Disposable Heroes”. He’s (the politician) calling anyone that questions the motive behind it or doesn’t believe in a coward and telling them to fight like maybe a draftee. He’s calling the soldier a blind man because they’ve sold the war to the nation (including the soldier) as they’re fighting to protect America when in reality the reason has nothing to do with protecting America’s sovereignty. This song did come out literally only eleven years after the last military personnel were withdrawn from Vietnam so it was still a war that was fresh on the minds of many Americans at that time. And what they’re saying is absolutely %100 true. That’s how it is. Your life doesn’t mean anything to those people. What’s interesting is that their goal of telling this story from all of these perspectives is to get people to think about these things and talk about them so people will think and question the necessity of it when the leaders of your country are talking about sending these real people off to war. As citizens it’s our responsibility to keep our government in check to make sure our military isn’t sent off to war unless it’s %100 necessary because these aren’t just pieces of garbage to be used and tossed away but real people that do matter. And it appears that even decades after it was recorded they’re achieving that goal because here you two are listening, thinking about it, and talking about it.

Absolutely 100% this. I know for a fact James respects soldiers. What he doesn’t respect is the government and their cavalier attitude towards sending Americans off to die for what’s essentially lies. So many wars and “skirmishes” or “military actions” weren’t about ending threats to our sovereignty. They were political wars with other agendas, but soldiers are lied to and have it drilled into them that they are protecting the country. That doesn’t mean they don’t realize this, but when you are out getting shot at, it doesn’t matter, you’re there to protect the people there with you. That’s not on the soldiers, that’s on the leadership, which is who this song is condemning.

This is a 2-point perspective...one from the soldier's point of view whom has become conditioned by the military to follow orders without questioning them, even if he feels he's fighting a pointless war. The other perspective is from the commanding officers, whom bark orders and send people to their death as if their soldiers are disposable. Once again Lex is appreciating the music and it feels like she really wants to rock out. Brad is thinking hard but feeling less. Brad - take Lex to a metal gig soon or I will😂😂

I don't think Metallica meant any disrespect to soldiers themselves, these songs were calling out the hypocrisy of government sending fresh 18-21 year olds of the masses to war, sometimes their only sons. These were basically children, just turning of age, off to fight in a foreign land for the greater good. They were barely adults. These albums came out barely ten years after the Vietnam war and it was still a big deal and fresh in the mind of the country in the 80s. Ten years before Desert Shield/Storm this was the biggest war of the era that most people thought we never should have been a part of, and most don't think we resolved anything by sending our youth off to die. Something we had done previously in WW2 and WW1. Remember Vietnam we also had a draft, not everyone who was sent volunteered, lots were drafted and forced to serve.

"Disposable Heroes" is about a country's disregard for their troops, who are heroes. It is an anti-war song. Kirk wanted "Disposable Heroes" to sound like the music he'd heard in war films. The term "Disposable Heroes" comes from the book Fahrenheit 451.

Congratulations you two, you just leveled up!!! This album for starters is the greatest metal album ever recorded. In 2016, it was honored with being added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress! I've seen Metallica live over 30 times!! Prior to 2005, there was no band on planet that kicked ass like they did; they were untouchable. Obviously father time takes its toll on us all, and it is true with metallica as well - this song was released 35 years ago!!! I was 14. It was this album that I first found this group, fell in love with metal and this band, and have been a huge fan ever since. Sadly their shows aren't like they were, and their albums don't inspire me like their first 5 did. I hope Lex gets to go a metal show. If you weren't all the way on the east coast I'd take you both to one. It's like The Matrix. There's no way to truly describe the emotions and energy of a live rock/metal concert. You have to see it for yourself.

It’s important to know that “Perspective” in this music art form is almost NEVER from the first person view. This song shifted from an “overview” of how the soldier is viewed from a critical eye “ Little soldier boy made of clay, doing exactly what he’s told.” Then shifted to the view of a soldier by a politician/superior; “BACK TO THE FRONT, I say when you die.” Finally from the Soldier’s POV dying in the mud griping his Gun. Metallica are very pro-soldier & anti-war.

Seems to me that the lower, condescending sounding lines from the critical eye and superiors that you mention are acting as 'voices' in the soldier's head, and that some of the other, later lines are sung from the soldier's own voice. The entire song sounds like it's being played out from the soldier's own mind. It actually reminds me a lot of how the title track was written between the master and the puppet, where the voice begins the song and later you hear from the person themself sorry if this comment doesn't make any sense, it's quite late as I'm sending this lol maybe in the morning I'll have no idea what it meant

Honestly Lex gets it. There are two types of people, people that feel the music and people that completely focus on lyrics or videos. Don’t get me wrong, lyrics are important, but a true metal head ALWAYS pays attention to the music first. Lex is a natural metal head. That being said, this song IMO is a critique on what governments do to their soldiers, it’s not a critique on the soldiers themselves. It’s about the war machine that views their soldiers as cannon fodder. It’s about a war machine that molds young men and women to serve their purpose, and sometimes that’s needed, but sometimes it used for the benefit of politicians and their contractors. Metallica is very pro troops, and have always been. If you haven’t checked it out, check out The Day that never comes video.

I've seen them live 5 times. Once front row at red rocks (I was in front of Kirk Hammett) for And Justice For All Tour... my friends and I were shouting for this song. They never did this live at any concerts I saw of theirs in person. I've seen some on youtube though. Great to see these guys in concert every time.

That is awesome. I wish I had taken the opportunity to see Metallica back in the day, but it just never happened. Absolute favorite band to blast in the shop though, they had a real impressive run of albums. For me it sucks that every time I see a reaction like this it reminds me how old I am. LOL I hear you there, although I would not trade in having lived through this musical period for anything. Musically the mid to late 70s through the early 90s is priceless.

Guys, PLEASE do Metallic “Orion” it’s 10 min instrumental and it’s fantastic. It’s the creation of the original bass player who shortly after died when their tour bus crashed. It’s a masterpiece and Lex will LOVE it. But review the version on KZread call “Metallica Orion (Original Creation 1986)”. It incorporates awesome outer space visuals that match the instrumentals perfectly. You’ll definitely enjoy. I’m here to watch you guys watch it! 💪

I think Het's perspective has also changed somewhat since this was written. Not just on this, but on a lot of things. ...And Justice was very anti US government. So much so that Don't Tread On Me followed it up as if to say "hey, but we love our country". I think this song is pretty explicitly anti-military. He's probably much less anti-military now.

This song was my intro to both metal and Metallica back when I was 11 in 1986. Been a lifelong fan ever since. Basically it's about military commanders ordering soldiers back to the front lines in all likelihood to die. Pretty heavy hitting but that's Metallica (and thrash metal in general).

I have been attending them since my very first one in 1980 when I was only 9 years old (my step-brother, 6 years older than me took me along with our parents' permission) and that was Van Halen's first big headlining tour. My first Metallica show was "And Justice For All" in '89, the year I graduated high school! Most recently I saw them in Charlotte, NC in October 2018...nothing in the world like a live concert, in my opinion - especially Metallica. Peace & Love, Y'all :-)

Keep in mind that in the serious end of metal like this, a lot of things, like a ton, are written with a huge amount of sarcasm and cynicism. I always took this as from the perspective of someone feeling disposable, with the chorus being how thier orders often sound to them.

This song gets me every time. I have a weird mixture of pride, embarrassment, and guilt that wells up whenever I hear it. Soldiers are pawns. We're fodder. It's the old lie, where you're told that going to war will bring honor and make you a man. Yet, for those that have seen, there's only destruction, death, and madness.
