I think what James meant by writing "made of clay" was not to say the soldier was cheap and disposable but rather someone that can be molded into anything the military wants them to be.

Nailed it, Gabriel. But to expand on that, it's not limited to the will of the military, even "patriotic" families pull the same shit, as in the lyrics of the final verse : ♫ Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say ♫ Had no chance to see myself, MOLDED DAY BY DAY Molded... like clay...

Play on words. "Made of clay..." Clay as in moldable, yes, but also the association with "mortal clay" a biblical reference: "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul". Juxtaposed in the next line of "...now an empty shell". Sneaky poetic stuffs.

"Soldier boy, made of clay, Now an empty shell" He's spent, he has served his purpose and no longer needed, laying on the ground discarded. I was in the military when I first heard this. It made me realize just how I had totally bought into the mindset and was nothing more than the number on my dog tags. I finished my enlistment and never looked back. Thank you for reviewing this one, this song changed the course of my life.

I respect anyone who fights because I don't think I have it in me and I respect anyone who deserts. We tend to only focus on the ones who fight and their bravery but I'm telling you it takes something to desert or not fight. I remember seeing a documentary here in the UK about people who didn't fight in World War 1 and World War 2 and they knew they were opening themselves up to being ostracised and hated in their communities. It takes a different kind of courage to make a decision like that.

Everyone has a opinion about which song is Metallica's Heaviest. Disposable Heroes is certainly one of them. But to me the two that come to mind is FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE or EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. Now Shortest Straw and Blackened are definitely heavy and then there is THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE. That song is a genre in and of itself. I think Korn we're extremely influenced by that song, wanting to do a whole album like that song. I think they finally achieved that with Untouchables. But that's just big thick drop tuned tones slowed down to almost Sludge Metal. Another Tone Heavy song from Metallica is of course Sad But True which has just got to be one of the greatest headbanging songs of all time.

At the time of release there was no other band that had their level of distortion and "crunch" with the palm muted downstrokes. No one, except for maybe Overkill's Taking Over but would have to check on release dates. Sure everyone years later copied the sound and some tried to surpass it with 7 string guitars, then drop D, and even drop C tuning. But at the time there was no heavier band. The change in tone from Kill Em All to Ride the Lightning was ground breaking.

+Tamas Egyed Yeah, 0:38 "This is the heaviest song of all time." *...Not.* First of all, the phrase "of all time" has been *so* overused, it has completely lost *any* impact it had. Also, *logically* speaking, it is almost always used erroneously, since "all time" means *ALL* time-past, present, *and* future. But we know what Vin meant. And he stated *just* an opinion, not a fact. And I think it's not even a wide-spread opinion. Everyone's seen loads and loads of *"Heaviest"* lists, and on how many of them exactly is Disposable Heroes featured, hmm? Since opinion lists are about as useful as physically fighting to determine who is right, I'm not even going to throw any candidates here. But *Tamas* you are right, *defining* is needed first. Starting from some common sense feature like the amount of aggression & relentlessness *combined* *with* earth-shattering bass frequencies in the song would be a start. Still, coming up with a singular answer is probably impossible and hence trying to find the answer is not worth of anyone's time. But everyone can have their own *favourite* heavy song :)

A lot of people say this was Metallica's best work. But I've always felt differently. I've always felt justice was their best work. Lars drumming was the best on justice, the lyrics and James voice was just so on point. I don't give a flying fuck about the bass, the album was so good, it could be ignored. Metallica were at the pinnacle of their career with justice.

Like this please: Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down (11 famous singers in one song, concept album) BTBAM - Ants Of The Sky /// White Walls (Brutal prog metal with elements of fun, concept album) Haken - Falling Back To Earth /// Visions (Buildup and resolution at finest, concept album) Next to None - The Wanderer (Tehno elements in a song, 18-19 years old members) Native Construct - Mute (Prog metal orchestra, Devin Townsend feel, concept album) (I strongly suggest reacting to whole album, it is a masterpiece) Intervals - Epiphany (Djazz (Djent + Jazz), instrumental) Leprous - Bilateral or Dare You (New prog with old feel) Rush - YYZ (Old classic prog, that inspired generations) Dream Theater - Octavarium /// Panic Attack (Like damn bro, most famous and influental prog metal band) Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (Why won't you just do this already?) Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Softer side of prog metal, they are quite similar to Tool) Symphony X - The Odyssey /// The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (Metal inspired by classical music, guitar work is similar to Yngwie Malmsteen) Liquid Tension Experiment - When The Water Breaks (Super band with 3 members of DT, and Tom Levis from King Crimson on bass) As you see i added quite a few ;)

To me, this is Metallica’s deepest display of lyricism. I’m officially older than the guys in the band were at the time of writing this song, and I can’t fathom sitting alone and thinking up this stuff. This is some seriously deep stuff. It’s amazing that these guys wrote all these songs, even more so at such a young age.

These guys were all born in the early 60’s and the last American soldiers didn’t leave Vietnam until 1975 so that war was definitely a big part of their lives from just seeing it on television constantly to the kid up the street whose big brother came home in a body bag etc...
