Torn between the 14-35 and the 15-35 for portraits and landscape and a bit of astro for my R7…

The 14-35 is fantastic on the R7! However, the 15-35 will give you better background separation. So if you want to do portraits with it, go for the 15-35 😊 The thing is… you might always think about that wider aperture, subconsciously wishing you had it, when you go with an F4. I’m actually considering switching to the 15-35 as well 🧐

I use the EF 16-35mm f4 and thats a good lens adapted

Hi there , interesting thoughts there Bram. I’ve had the 14-35 for almost a year now for my FF and found it incredibly useful as a mainly photo centric shooter although I have seen a lot of comment on the corner wobbles in video. It has pretty strong corner vignetting which isn’t hard to remove in any case. I do have the R7 but hadn’t thought of the 14-35 as a walk around lens as I’ve been using the R7 with the 70-200 4L as a two camera kit with the 24-105 on the FF as the focal ranges matches up quite nicely in the middle . In the reverse mode I’d probably put the 14-35 on the full frame and the 24-105 on the R7. Completely agree on investing in L glass from the outset , thats what I did when I got my 20D back in 2005 getting the 5D2 in 2009😀. I’m sure there are punters out there who would say that was a waste of money but it worked for me 😀

Ahhh the 70-200 F4 is also on my wish list 😀 How do you like it? I’m waiting for a couple good Black Friday deals! I’m also very eager to try out the 14-35 on FF… I got it with that in mind… but the R6 mk2 is very hard to find here 😢 So… I’ll have to wait for a bit, I guess 🤷‍♂️ L glass is never a bad investment hehe! Yes you can get the lower end.. they’re quite nice too. But… that red ring 😂

@@coppensbram Hi , I didn’t realise the r6ii was even at the delivery stage, pretty sure here in NZ its all pre-order. I saw a few comments that it was all small upgrades but hey so was the incredibly successful 5D series , I had the Dii and the Div before moving to Canons mirrorless system end of last year. Over 2021 and 2022 I’ve traded my EF L glass in for the RF using an adaptor for a while. One thing that surprised me was how well the EF glass held its value given the time I’d had some of it, very much taking some of the pain out of the changeover. The RF 70-200 4L is everything you would expect if you are familiar with the EF version and being retired and not so keen on humping around too much weight I do appreciate the drop in weight of all the RF gear over my 5Div setup, not that I didn’t really like the built like a tank beast that is the 5Div 😀 . One of the interesting things about the RF 70-200 4L and the 24-105 4L is they take up a lot less space in your camera bag meaning you can downsize that or just leave the lens on the body (my preferred reduce the dust option !!). I’m currently using the ThinkTank Backstory 15 and can easily get the R7 with the 70-200, the R5 with the 24-105 , the RF 24 1.8 ( I’ve used that a lot for dimly lit interiors of some of our historic homes - if you have any spare time I used the 24 exclusively on my most recent video) , a set of filters and a Rode NTG plus the usual bits and pieces . Comfortable bag, well made like the rest of the ThinkTank gear, didn’t break the bank and doesn’t look like a camera bag.

@@Chris-NZ Oh I meant it’s tough to get a pre-order in… it’s just not available at most stores here 😔 You’re totally right about the weight and size of the RF F4L series: it’s so easy to take around everywhere. I usually have the 24-105 or 14-35 on my R7 and it fits my PD sling 3L perfectly! And I think the 70-200 is about the same size 😊 About the 24mm prime… do you think it’s worth it? I was doubting between that and the Sigma 18-35, but went with the Sigma. Do you use it with the R7 or more for FF? I could probably do my talking head shots with 24mm at 1.8 on full frame instead of the Sigma 🤔 Oh and those scones… I want some of those 😆

@@coppensbram Hi Bram, I can confirm those scones smelt really great , what with the smell of baking and the coal range it really worked for me and of course I was in that kitchen a lot longer than the 20 seconds of video. I got the 24 for a number of specific purposes the first being interiors on those old homes which for reasons of preservation are not strongly lit and of course in places like museums flash is frowned upon if not outright banned and in anycase I like the nature of ambient light. There are some places I want to be less conspicuous (street, markets etc) but have the width , theres is also the pretty decent close up ability and I guess not having any other fast primes other than the nifty 50 it was a good fit. The L Canon primes are just too stupid expensive for me . I haven’t had cause to use the 24 on the R7 yet only FF but I don’t see why you wouldn’t especially with the crop factor and the close focusing for those detail shots. Yes the 70-200 is pretty much the same size so you won’t need to readjust the way your bag is configured although the hood is quite bulky. Cheers Chris.

I just got a brand new Canon RF 14-35 F4 lens for $600 USD. I think that is a great price point.

Does the wobble on the wide end not too distracting? Do you have long term experience about that in video?

@matyasvarga1994 it really depends how you shoot video. If you’re doing handheld shots all the time, you will notice it. However most is cropped out on the aps-c sensor. If you need an alternative, look at the Sigma 18-35, imo the best lens for video on the R7 😊

what if i use iso6400 in R7 will more grain

It really depends on the shot, shutter speed etc. I’ve taken many photos and shot video at 6400, and most are perfectly fine! Of course there is noise at that ISO, since it’s a cropped sensor with high megapixel count. You can easily remove it too these days in post production! That said, if you work in low light all the time, maybe it’s better to go for a full frame camera like the R8 or R6 II. I’d say either go for the R7, or splurge for the R6 mark II. The R8 has too many compromises in my opinion… The 14-35 is great on the R7!

Hi there 👋 Yes it will work on the R7. Although you have to consider the crop factor since that’s a full frame lens on an aps-c camera: your focal range on the R7 with this lens will be ~ 38-168mm.

thanks for the video, that was I thought. It will be more worth to buy the RF 14-35 mm f2.8 than the F4. But those lenses are too expensive :(. For the moment I will just play with my 35 mm F1.8 ...

Yes it’s a real difficult choice… If there are good deals on the 14-35 though, it’s still a great option. It’s much, much more compact and light than the 15-35. I haven’t decided yet what I’ll do with it 😬

Too much distortion at the wide end that needs to be digitally doctored up with the resulting loss of sharpness. I predict this will be the first "L" zoom to get a II version.

Yup... but you don't really notice it a lot on the cropped sensor of the R7. I'll definitely try it out once the R6 mk II comes in. And then decide if I want to keep it. Maybe it's better on the 15-35?
