11:12 FINAL THOUGHTS
I consider an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens an essential part of my kit and rarely go anywhere without such a lens in the bag. When light weight, compact size, and moderate price are important, and those attributes frequently are for a lens in this class, the Canon RF 14-35mm F4 L IS USM Lens rises to the top of the ultra-wide-angle zoom lens shortlist. The remarkable focal length range, reaching from 14mm all the way to 35mm, increases the versatility of this lens. Add excellent performing Nano USM AF and image stabilization along with this lens's impressive optical quality, and the other candidates on the list fall away.
During a conversation with Canon's engineers at the launch of the RF mount, it was promised that all RF lenses would have advantages over their EF counterparts. The RF 14-35mm F4 L IS USM Lens's EF counterpart is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens, and the RF's two extra mms of focal length on the wide end are a huge and obvious advantage. In addition, even without a mount adapter factored in, the RF lens has a smaller size and a modestly lighter weight. The RF 14-35 also has a 1.5-stop higher-rated image stabilization system to its advantage.

The focal length range availed is the first aspect to consider for zoom lens selection. Focal length drives subject distance choices which determine perspective.
Often, one cannot back up far enough to get a large subject or vast scene in the frame, and in that case, an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens is the right choice. When a foreground subject is to be emphasized, rendered large in relation to a vast background (potentially in sharp focus), moving in close with an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens is the right choice.
Note that covering the 14-35mm focal length range in a single full-frame lens is remarkable. While other full-frame zoom lenses cover 14mm or even wider, none of them reach the ultra-popular 35mm focal length on the long end.
Which photography genre has the hugest subjects? While astrophotographers arguably have the largest subjects (this lens lacks the ultra-wide aperture ideal for that use), landscape photography is also a great answer to that question. It's a big world, and the 14-35mm focal length range is a perfect choice for capturing the beauty of our planet.

    Hey dudes, This is the Canon RF 14-35mm L IS USM lens. And I have to say the image quality from this lens is outstanding. Its optical quality is amazing. The close focusing is insane and opens up a lot of creative avenues for photographers and videographers alike. But let me know your thoughts. Do you own the Canon RF 14-35mm L IS USM zoom lens?

    I personally love the build of these lenses and the overall fit & finish, well refined. Scratches on metal lenses would be more visible, no? Their great whites are mostly metal I believe.

    Hey James you actually raise some good points, the plastic most like does hold the physical look better as the colouring is most likely embedded into the plastic at moulding. Opposed to metal lenses needing to either be anodised or painted.

    Thanks for the Kudos brother. I think the Canon 14-35mm would make you very happy. You will get better performance with a cropped sensor as the best part of the lenses optics, the centre will only be recorded. Better edge to edge sharpness, contrast and illumination. Plus, when you're ready to step up to FF, you can take the lens with you.

    yeah I dont know why Canon is persisting with plastic lenses over milled aluminium. I get the weight difference, but for guys like us that come from the cinema world, they do not come across as durable. However, in saying this - the Rf 14-35mm image quality is incredible. It is worth the money

    Canon has the worst build quality of any major lens maker. I have a ef 16-35 f2.8 and without ever falling to the ground it snapped above the mount. When I called the service, they told me that’s actually a feature, because it introduces a weak link that prevents the lens getting completely destroyed in case it falls to the ground. I knew that’s BS, considering mine never fell to the ground. I’ll have to fix it sooner or later and I’m predicting it will cost a looooot. My Viltrox apsc Fuji lenses are way better in terms of build quality. Not even close. Canon? NEVER AGAIN!

    This lens is a distortion machine at wide angle. It's so bad that distortion correction is forced on with the resulting loss of resolution. This may be acceptable for most of you but I can afford NOT to own this lens.

  • @EntrNmHre

    @EntrNmHre

    Each to their own creatively. Lens distortion is a cinematic tool that is designed into lenses. Some 50K lenses have far worse distortion. Its how you use the "look of the lens" to aid telling your story.

  • @danielson_9211

    @danielson_9211

    The distortion is because in reality the lens is really a 13.7 not a 14mm, so with corrections turned on it crops it to a 14mm, I tried this against the 14mm Samyang lens.
