I live on and fish lake ontario exclusively, I've tried alot of Ned heads and I've always preferred the zman heads, I liked them even better when they had an even lighter hook in them, they deffinatly started useing a slightly heavier hook in their original plain ol Ned heads in the last year or 2. There's no reason you need a heavier hook, if you think you do then you need a lighter drag, lighter rod, or just stop putting so much pressure on them. We catch 10+ lb steelhead in heavy current with hooks just as light as those. I feel it will benefit people more to learn to use those lighter hooks than to just go heavier, but that's just my worthless opinion.

@danielfields641 me too, i use Mustad 32746. I still prefer the z-man heads but save a lot of money using my own in spots where I know im going to lose a few. Another benefit of light wire is that you can bend them out of snags and then just bend them back and keep fishing them as long as the point is still sharp.

I’ve suspected for a long time that Ned rig would work great for steelhead. What color do you recommend? Green pumpkin for me all day for bass but steelhead like bright colors so I’m not sure what colors to try first.

I fished with the weedless zman shroomz jig head for years. Lost a ton of fish, and it hung up constantly in the rocky waters I fish. This year I have switched to a flatlands tackle swinging weedless Ned head. It hardly ever hangs and rarely do I lose a fish. It’s made all the difference in the world.

Love the Ned, been fishing it for years here in the heartland. Make sure you use the longer Zman hooks when using the Big TRD. I will also take a lighter and heat up the end of the Ned and then flatten it out😉. It gives a ton of action and a different look. Give it a try!

Yeah buddy! I second the owner hooks.. I also make my own neds with an owner hook and I can confirm that the jig head will get stuck and you will break off before the hook will bend out. I fish tournaments in northern Wisconsin and fish a lot of rock and get hung up... A LOT. Thanks for the content man, your content is some of the best out there!

@@notblazedfordays9536 I’m selling my feelfree lure with a pod mount motor soon and I’m going with the Native Titan X which is not cheap. Generally a pedal kayak will run you at least 2K. I’d go with reliable brands like Old Town, Native, Hobie etc. The cheaper ones like bkc, mako, hoodoo etc just aren’t worth it because they aren’t made as well and don’t have good warranties on them. You definitely want one with a motor or pedals for the river or you will paddle way more than you will fish.

Ty: 1 - Owner Blockheads have been my Ned jig since I discovered them years ago. 2 - Mix it up - of course...and not just sizes - HogZ, CrawZ, Mr Twister Ned Ringers - change how it looks from just a 'stick' 3 - Yep - the slower the better...even just toss it and LEAVE it for a while. And 1/16oz is my starter weight. 4 - Something I might have to try - never swam a Ned.

Swimming the ned is a super cheat code. I use a 1/16th oz shroomz hook and a 2.5 inch Zman slim swimz and you can hop it on the bottom with plenty of action. On the other hand you can just fish it like a finesse swimbait and catch em like crazy if the fish are looking for a more active presentation. Sometimes I even fish it kinda like a shaky head where I just drop it in a high % area and wiggle it a for a bit and get tons of bites. It's a secret sauce I've been using to out fish my friends year round lol. (it isn't really a secret, they're just too stubborn to succeed with me)

I use the super finesse hooks and a 1/32 head but I use a Cashion Icon 7' ml rod, I have caught some giants, several 6+ and 5+ fish and can't remember bending a hook out, when I'm fishing heavier neds I do move up to a medium fast and a stouter hook , as far as changing up, I always get the big TRDs and cut them down to 3.5" or use them full size, another trick is to use the Zman Trick Shotz or the small scented jerk shadz as a ned bait , they are both amazing options

I've had the Ned Rig stuff in my boat for years and seldom used it. For about a month now, I've used it a lot and have had a lot of success. But on my home home lake, which is a highland reservior, the slower I go the more I hang up. So I had to keep it moving in short hops in 48 and colder water.

I throw craws, paddle tails , swimin senkos ( paddle tail senko) and just about any soft plastic on a Ned rig… the river fish seem to like it quite a bit… heck catfish seem to like it as well. Not my preferred target. But it’s pretty awesome pulling in 3.5 -5 ft flat head catfish on a Ned rig.

Hooks usually bend out from lack of penetration. If you don’t get good penetration, most of,if not all pressure is put on the hook point instead of the bend. When the pressure is applied to the bend it will not bend out.

Next experiment I'll try breaking out the Dremel and grinding them down different lengths to see optimal retention while still keeping them from shredding to quickly.

If you get a bent hook, most likely your drag is too tight. A properly set drag will never allow a hook to bend, unless you're throwing Ned rigs on a heavy rod with 50 pound braid. Sometimes fish should strip line from your drag... That's what it's for!
