Was never a fan of necromunda until I played a game with my nephew and now it’s my favourite game mode

Me and my childhood friend have been running a campaign over almost the past year. It gives us a reason to meet up and put being adults aside.

Great review. Just found your channel, and subbed :) Nice close up of the terrain. I was on the fence about this, but i think I'm now "in" on it. Two questions - 1) what do you use on the bases to make them look like mud/dirt, and 2) any idea if the terrain will match up with existing Necromunda terrain?

The bases are super simple, just straight Astrogranite painted on. I'll paint and dry brush it later of course. I'm not sure about matching the terrain with other terrain, it is a bit of a different style, but really I don't see what you can't have them on the same battlefield together, it's your game!

It does however fit with the Sector Mechanicus, and that fits with a lot of Imperium stuff again. It is your game after all! Im thinking about popping the Octarius on the map. Savage orks living in the desert...ah yes

@@EsotericOrderGamers Yeah that was probably the same i saw, really nice of them to actually think of this for a change. The designer has a full post on nitter (not a typo) that goes in detail on the terrain, and how it can be used.

Regarding the two different kinds of "sockets" of the building pillars, I guess they made them different so that ppl can not mix them as in ups I put this one upside down now. Besides that, great channel, just stumbled upon it and subbed. Thaks for the variuos aids made available on BGG. 🙂

Thanks UH for this complete run-down of Ash Wastes. This is the first GW box set in quite some time that has inspired me enough to actually buy it. I spend very little hobby money with GW these days. The latest KT releases have been lazy and boring, and the rules mess and expense for AoS and 40k means I have picked up other games (Core Space and OnePageRules). Big shame that in a $475 AU box that the board is paper, and not card based like KT and Warcry - mean and cheap if you are reading, GW, and you'll have to do better for any future purchases from me. But kudos for the great and inspired scenery Cheers to you, UH, for the most thorough review of this box that I've seen.

Thankyou Ashley! Do keep in mind that there will be more expense for Necromunda Ash Wastes stuff in the future, with gang books and probably more rules for trucks and things. I agree that the board should have been card - I was going to mention that but forgot. But despite the high cost you do get a lot of cool scenery and models. I'm painting them as we speak. So glad you enjoyed the video!

I have a good pile of Necromunda minis and terrain and this set is £180rrp in the UK (and I have Orlocks already). It has far fewer sprues than Dark Uprising (13v20) and that was £175 I think, but I passed on that as I already had MDF hive walls. I do like the new terrain (having seen it built) but I think this box should have been more focussed on vehicle combat as mooted, not a camp/village with just a couple of quads and (frankly) barely the rules to cover them. A basic set of gang rules in the back of the assembly instructions is a bit of a low punch in all honesty. If it had had a couple of medium-sized cars/buggies and some bikes and a FULL rulebook of vehicular rules I would have been all-in, but I don't think £180 (£144 online 20% off) for this is a good buy for me, but I enjoyed the vicarious experience of your unboxing sir, enough to watch it twice last night on the big TV. The idea of buying this, then having to get a hardback vehicle book (very probably as the Ash Wastes rulebook alludes to other rules) and maybe an A.W. Nomad Gang book, then starting a run of buying expensive truck/buggy models..... Hmmm. I just checked and I already have 2 softback & 5 hardback Necromunda books (with one more on the way!). I love the Nomad minis (& ticks) and I do like the look of the upcoming land train, but I think (for now) I'm going to wait and see as I feel GW really want to limit the value/savings of these boxes nowadays, compared to 2 or 3 years ago. PS: Did you get your Dark Uprising set on the table Peter?

Yes, more vehicles would have been great, and yes, they're no doubt lining up a whole series of extra expansions. As usual, value is not something you go to to GW to get! Glad you enjoyed the video so much, it should be better quality on a big TV these days as we finally got unlimited broadband and I can upload my videos uncompressed! I haven't built Dark Uprising yet (!) but I've played the new Necromunda of course - there's a battle report on the channel, check it out!

Good points, I'm on the fence about getting into Necromunda. I have the OG rulebook & sourcebook with some of the old starter set plastic Orlock & Goliath gang minis I found at a flea market, and the lore and setting are really cool. I don't love the look of all the modern designs but I really like the gangs & terrain in this set. However $300 is no small price, even if you're getting a load of plastic. Also, if trends continue, I wouldn't be surprised if Necromunda got a new edition soon. Not that I want it, though it might mean clearer & easier to read rulebooks, but Kill Team, Blood Bowl, & Warcry have all gotten new editions after like 3-5 years. If it does happen I'd like to not have just invested in an old edition. I haven't heard any rumors, but I think I'll wait a little bit and see for now.

How will this work out? The range/vision/cover etc? Looks like a huge open area. Are there sandstorm that obscure or give cover?

There's still plenty of terrain, but with faster moving mounts and vehicles you need a bit of space to move around in. And yes, there definitely are things like sandstorms if you want them!

Ash Wastes seems to be just Gorkamorka reimagined. Love it!

Yes, Dark Uprising. But Ash Wastes is more recent and includes vehicle rules.

That's straight-up Astrogranite painted on. Easy-peasy.

I really like the vehicles from Wargame Exclusive. Some consider them to be too small but I don't think so. If you measure them and consider they are supposed to be 1:56 (28mm) you realice they actually are sized the same as our current vehicles... ;-) I got 4 vehicles so far and definitely will get more.

As a graphic designer, it infuriates me no end that they still haven't addressed the legibility issue with the Necromunda rulebooks. I can imagine when it was first designed that the layout looked fine and perfectly readable on a screen. But as soon as they got the proofs back, any studio manager/creative director would have said to knock the background back a touch or beef up the font weight because it is painful to try and actually read. Even if they initially signed off on digital-proofs and didn't realise until the first print run turned up, you would still make the effort to fix it for future prints... Yet here we are 5yrs later, still stuck with it.

You sir, are correct. There's not enough contrast. The rulebook's first job is to communicate, not be thematic to the point near illegibility...

I agree; I'm also a graphic designer and I would have knocked it back too. The typeface is too thin to be comfortably readable on that texture.

It's interesting when people get specific about how 40k words 'should' be pronounced. It seems to me that, in-lore, the galaxy is so huge, with so many billions of different accents and ways of speaking amongst the millions of worlds, that almost any pronunciation will be correct somewhere. Even within the one main hive of Necromunda there will be some people who say Necromoonda.

Agreed, though I wouldn’t mind GW providing pronunciation guides for all its fictional words. Though we do know that 40K works off a bastardized Latin, so I too would call it “Necromoonda.”

It's NZ$499 here. Yes, very expensive. But I would point out that in this case the expense is not the game, it's the box full of terrain. You can choose to just purchase the rulebook and some models separately, and use your own terrain.

Models look nice, except the insectoid crawlers, but the lack of complete rules for all gangs in the ash wastes and the lack of generic vehicle rules makes it a poor offering IMHO

GW have never included rules for all gangs in any set, they're always in separate books, so that's to be expected. Same for vehicles - the rules can be used for any vehicles, we just don't have their profiles yet. This is all usual GW practice. We'd all love to have the entire system in one set, but that's not how the company makes money. 😆

First - For an expansion to a skirmish game like Necromunda one book should be enough to hold all the new gang rules for gangs in the Ash Wastes. Their core gang book should be enough as a base and then one tome for the new gang rules in Ash Wastes. And generic vehicles should have been included for sure. Sure they make a lot of money on all these books, but the bloat is insane at this point. It is so money-grabbing I lack words. There is a line somewhere between making on an IP and just plain exploiting the customers. Not to mention the amount of tomes one has to lug around now to play in this setting. I fully expect several more Ash Waste tomes now and I just think it is too much now. EDIT - oh and old versions of Necromunda didn't have that amount of books, just 1-2 to play really. It is a skirmish game. You don't need 20+ books to play a skirmish game...

Lars, I'm not here to defend GW's business practices, and if I ran the company I would do things differently. But GW have created games with expansions since the earliest days, and they continue to successfully and profitably exploit that business method. I would definitely love one book with all the gangs and vehicle stats in it, but then I'd also love someone to pay my mortgage and make me dinner every night. 🤣 As much as we would love businesses to act in a certain way, the bottom line is the only power we have in that regard is to choose to purchase their products or not.

@@EsotericOrderGamers I on the other hand believe that the whole "buy or don't" which often becomes "buy or shut up" (not saying you are saying that) is really detrimental to us as customers and fans of the IP. We need to call out the bad or uber greedy releases sometimes. And this is really bad. While the box may have great terrain and models - the points I have really weighs down on the quality of the release. There are even a couple of special characters that don't have rules in the book. It has become the modus operandi to spread out all the needed rules and information across a mountain of books. It's really bad.

Perhaps I could be more strident about this set's failings, but I've been whinging about GW prices in Australia and NZ for 10 years and it doesn't make a jot of difference. And again, this is nothing new, ALL GW sets only have stats for the models in the box, and GW have ALWAYS spread out game info in a bunch of books/codexes. As long as people keep rewarding that system with their cash, they'll continue in the same way - and who can blame them? Why sell one game and that's it, when you can sell a game and 10 expansions? Why do they make blinged out expensive Collector's Editions of their books? Because people buy them. I find it frustrating too, but we have to be realistic. 😃

@@Steve_Keen I agree the map should have been boards, the paper map is no good for long term use of course. Despite the very high price this is still only a starter set, and the main expense here is the terrain. Whether the instructions are colour or not is probably the least of the worries though 😆!

I mean, it comes from Latin, so your pronounciation kind of makes sense...

@@EsotericOrderGamers The contents of the box are - just barely - playable out of the box. NECROMUNDA is not playable out of this box. Even the Nomads, introduced in this box, don't have a full list in the box and will have to buy a Nomad "codex" in 2 weeks. And the gangs not in the box aren't playable at all, not even if you have the current gang book. For practical purposes they don't exist until they get their own vehicle book.

I can play this game with the models in the box and the lists in the box. That's playable out of the box. You don't HAVE to buy a full codex with all the fiddly extra details to play a gang. And again, GW hasn't made a box set with lists for all the forces available for the game in that box for, well, forever. I keep getting comments from people seemingly surprised that GW are doing exactly what they've been doing for ages! 😆

It is absolutely not the best set ever.

Yes, it's crazy expensive. But GW doesn't suck, because they keep making products that people buy. Buy it or don't buy it, that's your choice, but they're a company that made 350 million last year so from their perspective they're probably doing something right. You're entitled to your contrary opinion of course. 😆

Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean other people don't get fun and enjoyment out of it, despite the price. Go look at some of my other reviews, I absolutely pan the Warhammer + service, for example. My opinions are always my own and if they don't happen to match with yours, that doesn't give you the right to call me a shill. In this case, this is a super expensive box of cool terrain and an updated Necromunda rulebook, I don't pretend it isn't anything else. This is not a comprehensive critical review, it's an overview of what you get in the box, and I was excited by the models and terrain. Sorry you're not getting it for free, perhaps if you also worked for more than ten years making free content for gamers worldwide you would have the opportunity to get the occasional freebie.
