Nearer My God to Thee - The International Staff Band

Музыка

No copyright intended - may this music glorify Gods name.
This is "Largo" performed by The international Staff Band. This track features on the ISB's album entitled "Together", produced with Universal Music and released 24th November 2008. "Together was nominated in the Classical BRIT's NS&I Album of the Year 2009 category which included the top 10 selling classical albums of 2008." (information taken from their website)
This is a very popular song with beautiful lyrics:
1. Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
2. Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
3. There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
4. Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
so by my woes to be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
5. Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

    This is a hymn for those staring directly into the face of imminent death, afraid but courageous, because of their hope in Christ and the promise of eternal life near to God.

    Most people seem to think of the Titanic when they hear this. I rather imagine a small Yorkshire town amongst rolling dales, a light rain falling, smoke rising from chimneys as people make their way to Chapel on a Sunday afternoon sometime in 1916, knowing many of their sons will never come home.

    Music has a way of evoking emotion in people. No one can explain it or understand why. It just happens. Music changes people. It unites and separates. It kills and gives birth to new things. New ideas, new people... Music above all has and always will be the one thing that holds us together through it all. Even now, as I sit here and type this, I’m in tears. I can feel the pain and anguish that was felt by those past and feel the relief after a hard life as they walk towards God. Even if you’re not musical, it still seems to touch us in a way that we may never understand.

    @@ZusuBee I agree. We all saw that scene plenty times and it was wonderfully done. The impact of this movie should not be underestimated. Some of the tracks in the film are among the most beautiful music in the world. Whoever could keep it dry during the scene where the poor people tucked their children into bed while the water was flowing through the door, doesn't have a heart. It was the most touching scene in the entire movie.

    After busting my teeth and finding my then 54-year long career as a trumpet player/cornetist absolutely ruined? I took a year off. Then in late 2019 I started playing on a completely new embouchure. Albeit finally using the correct embouchure. Just this past Saturday I got the solo in the above piece in a local concert band. I felt flattered to get an opportunity to play the solo. Since after all, I am a beginner once again. However, I've simply lost a few notes off the top end of the horn. That and sometimes feel a bit less sure of myself. In my younger days, I was a powerful lead trumpet player who rarely missed a note. As the above tune progressed, I found myself utilizing a mild vibrato or tremolo almost exactly like the one that the soloist here displays. Since Classical music isn't my main area of expertise, I was pleased to discover that this professional group was playing in a similar manner. A vibrato ought to be a natural one that grows organically out of the context. I do not practice it. In fact when practicing at home, I almost always sustain straight, unwavering pitches. However in such a somber mood as is characteristic of this famous hymm? A natural vibrato is almost necessary. It almost might sound weird if it wasn't used. If we listen to the soloist we'll note that he starts the tone off even in pitch but accentuates the waver only towards the end of the pitch's duration. This is not only the perfect way to employ a vibrato, but helps to blend a tone in with any potentially weak intonation coming from the group around the soloist. All of the great trumpets employed vibrato, but not excessively. And while not a Classically aligned musician, it was Maynard, the high note King who employed it best. Although Doc was pretty good at it too.

    What you need to understand, not that it changes what you're saying much, is that the soloist here is playing a cornet-likely a Yamaha. No trumpets in SA bands, only beautifully mellow cornets.
