Lyrics by Sarah Flower Adams
Music by Lowell Mason
---------------------------
The Titanic had eight musicians onboard when it struck an iceberg on 14th April 1912. They famously performed music on deck as the passengers abandoned ship, and it is reported that the final piece heard that evening was 'Nearer, My God, to Thee'.
Around 1500 passengers and crew lost their lives that evening, including all eight musicians of the Titanic.
The violinist in the band, John Law "Jock" Hume (9 August 1890 - 15 April 1912) was 21 years old. He is buried in grave 193 at Fairview Cemetary, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is remembered in a memorial in Dock Park (next to the bandstand which he performed on) in his home town of Dumfries, Scotland.
The memorial reads:
In memory of John Law Hume, a member of the band and Thomas Mullin, steward, natives of these towns who lost their lives in the wreck of the White Star Liner Titanic which sank in mid-Atlantic on the 14th day of April 1912. They died at the post of duty.

Titanic is by far the most well known…but yes the idea can easily apply to the other lost liners of history. I have a sermon for the titanic anniversary last year for my synagogue & we had a slightly adapted version of this for the closing song.

Tan sólo a ti. Día feliz veré, creyendo en ti, en que yo habitaré cerca de ti. Mi voz alabará tu dulce Nombre allí, Y mi alma gozará cerca de ti. Amén.

Great Hymn that brings tears to my eyes There is some dispute if this is actially what the gentlemen played on that fateful night the RMS Titanic went down. But I think if I was on the ship I would have liked to hear it in my last minutes on this earth. To the many who died due to arrogance and negligence of the master and crew, I know you are with Our Lord and though many of you died years before your time, you are at peace and have not had to go through the perils of the wars to end a wars and the wars that came afterwards. LORD, be kind to all who love YOU, and save us from the Armagedon this world now faces Amen Pax+

It's a beautiful tune and extremely well played. The only trouble with using it as a tribute to the victims of the Titanic sinking is that, according to what I've heard and read, the tune which was played by the band at the time was different to the one commonly used these days and presented in the video. Still a beautiful tune though, and I guess it doesn't really matter a heap which tune you use. The sentiment remains the same.

A beautiful hymn associated by many with the Titanic tragedy. Jonathan Scott 's choice of St John's organ is particularly poignant as Dumfries is close to Lockerbie where so many perished in the Pan Am aircraft explosion in 1988, where the destination was also the USA.

This hymn version is beautiful. She is cheerful and charismatic. However, it is not the one that played during the sinking, but rather "The Horbury Version", since from a distance it is very easy to confuse with the song "Autumn". This is very likely as many surviving passengers testified that they heard the piece called Autumn. Again, I love this version, but I think The Horbury far surpasses it. I ask you not to take my comment the wrong way, I am 14 years old, and like all fans I have to admit that I have seen articles, movies and documentaries about the Titanic since I was 6 years old.

This is an American tune, Bethany. If indeed this hymn was played by the band on the Titanic (there is some debate about this) the tune would have been Horbury. Titanic was a British registered ship, and the band members were British. They would have been familiar with Horbury, the British tune associated with this hymn.

There are three major hymn tunes associated with the lyrics, including one composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan. Wallace Hartley would have been familiar with all three and while they is plenty of speculation, we'll likely never really know which one he would have chosen. John Law Hume and John Clarke, the band's double bassist are both buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Hume in Fairview Lawn Cemetery and Clarke in Mount Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery.

@@James_Bowie This is "Bethany" the tune most associated with the hymn around the world but in the UK, many people sing it to a tune called "Propior Deo" the one composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. The third tune that I'm familiar with is "Horbury" written by John Bacchus Dykes. "Autumn" is a completely different tune. It's a slow waltz composed by Archibald Joyce. There are so many conflicting reports by survivors that we'll likely never know what was the last work the band played was. In the end, it doesn't really matter, the heroism of the band that night was remarkable.

The accounts from the survivors vary. The only thing we can pretty much be certain of, is that the final tune played by those brave band members was a hymn. This one is as perfect a tribute to their bravery as any.

@@verdiguy Only this tune is published to every example I can find, I don't know of alternate tunes used in the early 20th century and there doesn't seem to be any books with an alternate version. Also, I don't understand how it would be recognised by the passengers if a different tune was played that was limited to a small number of churches. Where did these alternatives come from?
