In Poland we had great experience of NBA in 90s. After fall of communism NBA was like wind of West in our country, so Gary was one of many players who were idols of my childhood. I remember my cousin who had cap with Sonics logo, and he told me about Payton. What a defensive beast! In my favourite top 5 he always would be PG 1st or 2nd pick if I would like play more or less defensively. Tough man in tough NBA times

Every team in the 90's who step up against the Bulls in the finals, could won the championship against any other eastern conference team, and Seattle and The Glove and company are no exception, without Chicago, The Supersonics have won that year... And it was a pleasure and a suffering at the same time watching him play, as a Bulls Fan.

The sonics and the bulls was my favorite series to watch, I wanted chicago to win in the nba finals because I'm a huge michael jordan fan as well as being a detroit pistons fan even with the rivalry between the pistons and the bulls and I'm from seattle too. I really like every team in the 90s since there was so much competition and talent on every team from every position that being a 2 way player was common and players could both play offense and defense and the defense being played as well. I would have magic johnson as my number 1 point guard because he was a winner and my number 2 point guard would be gary payton because him and michael jordan were the only guards that won defensive player of the year award since the defensive player of the year award normally goes to big men plus michael jordan would try to do whatever it took to win plus it was an anomaly for guards to win defensive player year of the award. Nowadays it looks like players wanna just shoot 3 pointers and barely put any effort on playing any hard nose defense. It's why I appreciate the detroit pistons in 2004 and being able to try to shut down teams under 70 points.

I almost forgot Sidney Moncrief, who win the award two times, and Alvin Robertson and Marcus Smart, so therefore has been 6 players guards to win the defensive player of the year award in the NBA. Jordan, Payton, Cooper, Moncrief, Robertson and Smart.

@@PhoenixAscending And just because he didn't doesn't mean he's not a great player. Just because you're a Bulls fan don't mean you better, or they better. Do you play defense, have you won defensive player of the year, do you have millions like Gary Payton and have a NBA Championship ring do you? Just because you like the Bulls, don't mean anything and sure MJ was great and has 6 rings but last time I checked Bill Russell has 11. Moral of the story there's someone out there even better than you, me, and even your team.

His career stats are misleading. You have to study his stats year by year to see how he developed his offensive game to average 19+ points a game for many years. His career stat reads 16 pts only because of the first few and last few years of his career.

In his prime time, many sport journalists and media called him as the best point guard, and rest - second best at least. Watched all of the Jordan's finals and in my humble opinion if not Rodman, Bulls wouldn't pass Seattle. That Supersonics team was a hell of a threat and an entertainment. High profile show, with the coolest intro and very eye pleasing jerseys. Battles between Payton and Stockton were just with such a tension, you wouldn't see same level of personal competition in modern nba.

Stockton, Kidd, Cheeks are pure points. Gary in his prime also looked to score and did well in that regard as well. He was at least, a bit of an old school combo like West, Frazier, Maravich.
