Those zodiac motors always break down but they're usually pretty quick to fix. We did a training package at Coronado Island on the seal base (I was marine) and the coxswain (sp?) course taught them how to fix them on the fly. We did a training raid over maybe 10-15 miles and I swear out of a couple dozen boats or so, a quarter of them broke down. Most were repaired in minutes. "Air fuel spark!"

In 1973 I went to Brasil from Panama. On the same Pan American plane, he in first class me and two of my soldiers in coach travelled there. Three days later we were leaving Army headquarters in Brasilia. He, only a lieutenant colonel had to take the bus. We were given a carryall as we photographers had to transport our equipment. Noriega was awaiting a bus. We pulled up to the bus stop. He looked frightened. I said in Spanish, Colonel Noriega, we are from Panama la Zona del Canal here to photograph the conference you are attending. May I give you a ride? He got in. I asked if we could pick him up in the morning. He said yes, but Toca la bocina “Hit the horn”. He did not want us to enter his BOQ room. Later, I found out why. He on a diplomatic passport carried a machine pistol to Brasil. He was so frightened that he would be executed. A porter bringing the minutes of the conference opened his door only to find Noriega pointing the pistol at him. When we got back to Panama And the film was printed I called Colonel Noriega to bring the still photos and a rough cut of the film. He wanted to come to my office, but I did not want to explain why he was visiting me so I volunteered to carry the film and photos to him. He was nice to me, but a real snake. My brother has dual US and Panamanian citizenship has told me what high level Panamanians know or knew about Noriega. My brother still has an apartment at Punto Patilla, the nicest part of Panama City.

This entire invasion was a "slam dunk". The biggest problem planners had was fielding all the requests from various military units: "we want to play too!", and finding missions for them all. In the case of this plane and boat, they could easily have been destroyed in minutes with a helicopter gunship or F-16, but the Seals wanted to play too, so this mission was given to them. During the leadup to the invasion, troops could actually walk the ground they planned to attack in broad daylight and with no reprecussions .... how often does that happen? We drove our armored vehicles across the front of the PDF 5th Infantry Barracks every day.. with machine guns pointing at the barracks that were only 50 feet from the road. The Panamanians knew it was coming before long, and even knew what would happen, and that there was nothing they could do. On the night of the attacks, all the Panamanian Officers were mysteriously absent from the Panamanian bases around Fort Amador in Panama City. They could not even get into the arms room to get out their weapons and ammo, because the offciers had the keys. The biggest problem was the "Brigade de Dignidad" (Brigade of Dignity) which was a large force of paramilitary forces Noriega created shortly before the invasion. These troops were recruited from impoverished areas that were stout Noriega supporters, and became almost Rabid in their support once Noriega created a special force for them to join. The were trained for about six months prior to the invasion by Captain (later Major) Moses Cortizo-Cohen, who was commander of the Panamanian 5th Infantry on Fort Amador. They wore no uniforms, had no military haircuts, and could blend into the community. They remained a problem for weeks after the invasion was concluded.

@@PattMcCrotch I was supposed to say to avoid Collateral Damage 😅 well that explains the plane, since it was the order from above but the captain ended up firing a missile since it wasn't the light resistance they expected 🤷🏼‍♀️ For the ship, I son't think they considered Collateral damage since their mission was to completely destroy it. I think the underwater demolition works best since there were already PDF Guarding it, so they can't just appear in there and start firing missile, plus it was no ordinary ship, it's a gunship heavily equipped with weapons. They could've easily been eliminated if they lined up on the ground

This is the big help of the U.S to the other Country and to the rest of the World who is suffering from the hands of their bad leader. even though it's a risky mission they're always there to protect.

Side topic. Does anyone remember the documentary in the late 90s about the mission to create a diversion on the iraq beach where they had to swim and plant explosives and then swim out?

God bless our troops BUT why, when the fighting started, couldn't we just have fired a "Hellfire" missile or some other missile into the gunboat from a safe distance?

Because to do that you’d have to fly a plane or helicopter close to it, which doesn’t exactly help with the surprise element. Remember this was done in preparation for the invasion.
