Yeah but if you don't pull out in time you could have a mistake on your hand that's going to last for the rest of your life. And then the only way to fix the mistake is to love the mistake even though you didn't want it in the first place. And even if you try to leave, the country can take you to court and force you to pay for the mistake for the rest of your life. Which is messed up because you didn't even really like the other country to begin with. You just wanted to have some fun and the other country was cool at first, but now they're hostile and like, "Take care of this mess you made otherwise I'm going to make you suffer." And at first you're like yeah whatever. But then you start to getting paranoid like, "Even though I could beat the crap out of the other country, I can't because then the rest of the countries in the world are going to come after me. And besides that, this little country can't kill me but they can definitely blow up a couple of my towers. That's what happened to that last country I was messing with like 20 years and I'm still paying for that." So then you're just like alright I'll just stay here a little bit longer and then I'll leave. But then the country kinda becomes dependent on your presence there. Like if you go they may have meltdown and start messing up other countries and then all the rest of the countries in the world is gonna blame you for that too. So then you're thinking, "Why did I even get in bed with this country in the first place?" And then you remember, you were being prideful and emotional and thought you could fix that country and go back to your old life. But nah. So now you're stuck with this crazy country and this little mistake that you didn't want in the first place. And then you find out that autism, diabetes, and general retardation run in this country's family. So now this little mistake has a gang of genetic and mental disorders that you gotta foot the bill for. Meanwhile your ol lady back at home is like, "Why are you messing that country? I thought you were done with her. This is why I don't like when you make executive decisions. I should've never elected you in the first place." So now you're paying for two countries and both and them hate you and no longer want them around. And at first you want to get mad at them, but then you realize. Nah, this was all your fault to begin with. You brought this on yourself. If you were at home taking care of your own country instead of looking out there to see what's going on in the world trying to be cool, you would've never had this problem to begin with. ...but yeah other than that we should definitely pull out of Syria.

Hes absolutely correct. In my view , the religious fundamentalism at play in those countries paired with the destroyed infrastructure and hopelessness of the children is a fertile breeding ground for the recruitment of future American hating terrorists. The only way to stop that would be total occupation of those countries in numbers we dont have to commit to it. Really the only option is to leave and make sure they are contained.

We are if that was the plan, which it was. The goal of these wars in the middle east isnt victory, its destabilization of the region to secure Israeli and Saudi hegemony in the middle east. Thats why they want to go to war with Iraq even though we cant win, we dont care about winning we just want to wreck the country. Thats why we went from Lebenon to Afganistan to Iraq to Lybia to Syria to Yemen and now Iran. Look up the Clean Break papers and the Odid Yinon plan, this has been planned out for the past 30 years. Sadly the quote is human nature at it's worst. Pretty sure that quote is from George Santayana circ.1922 though. Sorry, not trying to hijack the comment, just figured I'd throw that out there if anyone wants to do their own research.

I did multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and even though the middle east has always been crazy, invading Iraq caused today's situations in Syria and the creation of Isis. As bad as Saddam was, there were no Islamic terrorists in Iraq. Saddam hated terrorists. The Sunni and Shia were living together peacefully. You wouldn't believe how many Iraqis told us life was much better under Saddam. Also Afghanistan would be in a much more favorable situation had we not diverted all our energy and equipment to Iraq.

Saddam ruled Iraq with an iron fist, and kept his boot on the neck of Shites. Of course there were no terrorists in Iraq under Saddam, he would have had his secret police round them up and kill them as they could have been a threat to his power. Saddam however was a supporter of terrorism as he paid the families of Palestinian suicide bombers upwards of $25000 each. The US "leaving" Iraq caused the power vacuum creating ISIS. Had President Obama had the gumption to complete the SOFA agreement that was nearly complete at the end of Bush's administration Iraq would have been far more stable than it became. Instead the Obama administration completely cut Iraq off. In no way am I saying the invasion of Iraq was right; nor the way in which the war was prosecuted was right; nor how it was handled after Saddam's regime was toppled was right.

It is not my problem that they want our resources to solve their own problems that they won't fix by themselves. SV IOREK I agree! The people in our society with an innate warrior mentality deserve to fight, but for a cause that is truly valiant. If you look at the facts in the middle east, this is, in too many cases, far from the case. I used to want to join the US military above all because I could never shake this voice in my head to fight, but unless things change I dont think I can. Ive been researching UN peacekeeping recently as an alternative.

Back when there was a laissez-faire attitude we had 2 world wars. Now we take a proactive step in insuring peace across the world. Let me ask you this: Those insurgents, Al Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram etc etc, what do you think their goals are? Like, why do they wake up every morning to kidnap young girls and young boys, prostitute them, kill unarmed civilians and take control of towns etc. Why is it, in your opinion, that they do those things?

Special Inspector General reported that Afghan police are incapable of keeping hold of their territory, and that they have made no progress in pressuring the Taliban. Further, "only 55.5 percent of the total 407 districts were under government control or influence - the lowest level since SIGAR began tracking district control in 2015." The war on terror is an abysmal failure. The Taliban have been starting to win in Afghanistan, we brought terrorists into Iraq and created ISIS, Pentagon-funded terrorists were fighting against CIA-funded terrorists in Syria, and we're still in bed with the goddamn Saudis who literally export the extremist interpretation of Islam, Wahhabism, that all these enemies adhere to, and in the meantime, all these terrorist groups we provide funding and weapons to go ahead and give those to our explicit enemies. General Patreus even fucking suggested that we fund the Syrian branch of *Al Qaeda* "Moderate rebels" is code for "terrorists that are on our side _for now_ ." If you want to effectively attack terrorism, you need to fucking start by *not* funding it. It might also help if we don't radicalize people (cut off terrorism's supply line) by _not_ bombing hospitals and even weddings! We've set the middle east on fire, and created multiple failed states... perfect breeding grounds for more terrorists to feed the military industrial complex.

Everything’s relative, many women for instance are much better off during American occupation of Afghanistan, but this agitates traditionalists as well His point was you can knock a “bad” infrastructure down quickly but the rebuilding process requires a commitment that the US military, government and populace do not want to make.

Yea, giving him the benefit of the doubt, the US is extremely effective at conventional warfare. What we aren't good at is solving the political problems the day after. War is politics by other means, thus at some point you have to stop shooting people and start governing. Guys like Stumpf don't understand what the day after the war even means. They think the fight is the point.

Why? It's not like Petreus is going to tell the truth.

What he says at the end, about how he never knew if his efforts had any positive impact beyond the moment, was exactly how I felt about it when I watched The Hurt Locker. What a waste for those men to be over there. They could have a much better impact on the world living their lives and raising their families in their homes.

Joe seems to be giving this guy more credit than he deserves in some ways. Yes he was a seal and yes he knows about combat and is highly trained but that doesn't mean he's an expert on world affairs. I have a lot of military members in my family and in my circle of friends and a lot of them don't have a very well thought out view of things, hell I can't tell you how many times I've heard one of them say something that I know is 100% not true, they aren't trying to be malicious but they just hear something and go with it without actually researching it.

Goes both ways. Everyone is guilty of being incorrect on a topic and not thinking things through all the way or very well. But in the end who decides what a well thought out idea is? Everyone military and civilian has a view point about something and while it maybe wrong to some, it maybe right to other. It’s beneficial to not take the stance as the one who decides what is or isn’t well thought out.

If that's your argument; that means if you/them attack us it's okay for us to attack you/them in retaliation for your attack on us. We might of killed 100,000 of your/their people in the war so maybe they/you should realize that attacking the western world is a vary bad idea because we have the world's: largest, most disciplined, technologically advanced & best trained military in the world. So any attack on us will inevitably result in them/you losing. P.S Canada wasn't involved in the war with ISIS until they declared war on us. Making our attacks on them justified. P.S you say it's not our war? Well because of the war in Syria/Iraq the western world has taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees costing us billions of dollars.... that makes the war our war because it's affecting us! Canada was involved in the Afghanistan war (it was the lead nation for years) and the war against ISIS .. it wasn't over oil because Canada already has the 3rd lagest amount of oil resources in the world. We wouldn't spend billions on oil when we have more than we'll ever need.. we fought the war because ISIS are evil rats who deserve to be hunted down like rats and systematically executed.

I think Bissonnette said it best that SEALs have to be more independent thinking, from the bottom up, while Marines, for example, have to be more unit oriented. From the top down. It's not that Marines don't debate their own ideologies or philosophies, it's just that there's a greater need for adherence to orders.

Pretty sure the Korean War didn't end decades ago. My understanding is that although military action ceased in the 1950s, there was never a truce agreed upon and thus the war officially never ended. It was just a decades-long ceasefire.

I think we've already accomplished our objectives in Afghanistan and Iraq. They were only important in the context of the Cold War and 9/11, not so much now. What we need to do is make a strategy which will prevent the necessity of those kinds of interventions, and then pull out.

The problem is that the people and governments of those countries dont want or can't handle democracy. My high school history teacher always said, "Some people aren't ready for freedom..."

Haha you people are crazy, it's okay for Russia to sit back from their lines and rain down cruise missiles but when the U.S. steps in and tries to see what the hell is going on it's called invading. I think you lose the right to own a country whenever you tear it apart with war from within, that's when the country with the bigger stick comes to lay down the law and tells them it's either act civil or get turned to ashes. US has killed 20 million people in 37 nations since WWII, and injured many more. I hold a grudge if someone cuts me off in traffic, imagine watchin a US jet drop a bomb on your town killing everyone you love. I'd be more then a little pissed off.

I feel like the conversation everyone avoids, and rightfully so, is that the only turn key solution to war would be to conquer entire countries to occupy power vacuums. Even just controlling a country and ensuring new leadership to lead them in a positive direction. I know, by doing this we’d be affection cultures and communities, and often we’d possibly make more of a negative impact than otherwise. Without drastic solutions like that, however, we’re going to be running the cycle on repeat forever.

We were very effective cutting off one head but it grew two more. So it essentially, wasn't effective then is what you're saying.

The goal isnt terrorists. Its to keep key resources out of the hands of china and russia. We just cant out right say that, so we use the "terrorist" excuse to essentially fight a war against russia and china. China is moving into afganistan now that we left and will probably make them communist now. It has always been about that. Creating more terrorists isnt really of national concern. They are just pawns for china, russia, and US.

Such a smart guy. Any military and any country would be happy to have him. My respect.

Asking a member of the military when to end a war is like asking an alcoholic when to close the liquor store.

I just feel like ive watched a lot of them from Jocko, Josh Bridges, Dan Billzeilrean, Tim Kennedy(even tho I dont believe he was ever a SEAL) and I cant remember hearing anything like this guy said, and im paraphrasing, “I think we had an impact in the moment but I dont know how much we helped.”. Let me know tho because I would love to see those videos; often I feel as if many in the military joined because it paid and it was highly respectable, so to hear a soldier talk about the morals of his actions and his mission is something I find absolutely fascinating. Hope you dont think this means I hate the military either because it is our politicians fault... they ultimately give the orders

Our military presence in Germany, Italy, S. Korea, Guam etc. are purely strategic. A means to quickly deploy assets out. Its the same reason the Navy patrols in the open waters of the Pacific, S. Atlantic, and Indian Ocean. Russia has had a very hard time advancing or trying to take back former Soviet territories with US presence in EU. The same for China w/Vietnam and Taiwan. Not that we have to worry about Argentina or Turkey but there is a reason why Cyprus and the Falkland Islands are still heavily in use for the British (and U.S.) military. Strategic location. That's a means of "plugging the sprout". The idea that the military is not good at building infrastructure and holding terrain comes from a Marine skill set point of view. With everything, they're in and out. That skill set was never meant or designed to fill that role. This is where the Army and Air force come to build infrastructure bases and air strips for logistics. There is a reason why most bases OCONUS are Army or Air Force. Whether the Army and Air Force are doing it effectively and efficiently....entirely different matter, but its absolutely been effective in EU and the Pacific. What I believe this comes down to is the difference of ideologies. The Japanese and Germany ultimately shared a similar ideology to the U.S., but these Islamic states are different animal entirely, and unfortunately the Islamic states "preach peace" butt heads every step of the way and accept zero compromise. Its their way or a fight.

As hard as it is to believe, the world has never been as peaceful as it is today. On a long enough timeline it's conceivable that war will become too costly and inconvenient, or waged by other means (i.e. robots, cyberspace).

It's going to be hard to destroy these ideologies when you level villages of innocent civilians in airstrikes. I think any normal human would be out for revenge after their people are treated the way a lot of the middle eastern countries are by the US
