Mike O'Dowd attended Santa Monica High School with Jonny Kim. Kim enlisted out of high school and served in the Navy from 2002-2009. He described his desire to enlist as "no one could talk me out of it" despite his mom being fiercely against it. Due to pressure from family and friends to not enlist in the military and go to college, O'Dowd first attended Boston University and was getting acceptance letters from law schools before deciding to live life for himself rather than following his mom's wishes no matter how contrary they were to his own, and fulfilling his longtime dream of enlisting to be a Navy SEAL, and served from 2008-2017.
