Navigating Safely Through Congested Roads - Key Tips for Riding in Heavy Traffic

Whether you're a seasoned rider or just starting out, understanding how to navigate through heavy traffic can be a lifesaver, quite literally! Today, we're sharing some essential tips that will help you ride more confidently and safely amidst congestion. 👍
Vigilance and Awareness - Always scan your surroundings. Be aware of the actions and intentions of other road users, and use your peripheral vision effectively. 🕵️‍♂️👀
Safe Distance Maintenance - Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, ideally a two-second gap. In challenging conditions, extend this gap even further. Remember, handling tailgaters calmly can also ensure your safety. 🚴‍♂️ ↔️ 🚗
Mirror Usage - Adjust your mirrors correctly before you ride and check your blind spots frequently. Make sure you signal your intentions well in advance before turning or changing lanes. 🔄🔍
Filtering Through Traffic - Before filtering or lane-splitting, make sure it's legal and safe to do so in your area. Always be cautious and assertive while doing it. 🚧🚦
Let's make sure our ride is safe and enjoyable! No matter how eager we are to reach our destinations, remember that safety always comes first! 🛡️🚦

As someone living in a city centre in the UK, I’ll be honest that the biggest issue when riding in traffic can be other riders. Filtering is legal here (no speed stated) so it’s always important to look out for less considerate riders trying to blitz through traffic or riders with less awareness as I’ve been cut off so many times now by riders who just check mirrors for a car and don’t turn their heads. Yeah I’ve had plenty of cars blatantly push into my lane but I’m of the view that in traffic it’s my duty for my security, some cars won’t notice you even if they see you but if you just sit there and defend your position righteously you could be right but it won’t make the bump hurt any less. Ps hitting mirrors is a little b*tch move 100% of the time

I know this sounds terrible but I just got on the road for the first time in nearly a decade.. motorcycle or car... and I am on a motorcycle... and my primary goal is to get there and back in one piece wherever there may be, does not matter. Anyway, I was massively out of practice in terms of mirror usage and or shoulder checks ect.. but being that my primary goal is to get back, the only real way to do that is to use your mirrors as much as is possible and shoulder check to be sure.. having an awareness of what might happen given certain positions and or just where you line up at the lights can be very important... its something I think about whenever I am rolling up to one... and active down-shifting so I am always in the right gear...
