    If it's in the inside rearview mirror, it's behind you. If it's only in the side mirror, it's already too close and you should not change lanes. And set up your mirrors in such a way that the door handles are visible if you move your head closer to the mirror. When you drive in the city, your head should be turning quite a lot and frequently. You should be scanning very agressively for pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, cats, trams, kids, etc.

    Same here. Seeing the same view from all 3 mirrors is redundant. Blind spot size is minimized with SAE. But no matter what angle your mirrors are, you should never rely on mirrors alone when checking your blind spots when changing lanes. I do a head turn before changing lanes and with SAE angled mirrors that adequately covers the whole blind spot area.

  • @Un1234l

    @Un1234l

    SAE method is great, except for parking. Can't get super close to the curb without hitting it when parking unless I adjust the mirror to the standard method of using the body of the car as a reference point. And sometimes when driving in the city looking for parking, you don't have the time to adjust the mirrors to optimize parking visibility. But that's why I leave passenger side mirror to see car body but the driver side I see the next lane over.

    I tried this today and it definitely did not work for my vehicle. I drive a small SUV, and if i adjust the mirror to see the front handle, i would see nothing but the ground right next to the vehicle. Mine is more correct when only rear door handle in in the corner of the mirror.

  • @EnglishYobbo

    Doesn't work at all for me either. Using the back door handle worked much better and should be the handle used for most people, not the front.

  • @megamania501

    3 ай бұрын

    @@RightLane393It creates redundancy by all mirrors showing the same angle (which isn't needed), while increasing the size of the blind spots on both sides of the vehicle. Look at the interior mirror and note an object at the left edge of the mirror. Then look at your left door mirror and note the position of that object. If that object isn't found at the right edge of that mirror, but further in, then your mirror can be turned more outward which decreases the size of the blind spot on the left side of the vehicle. Then do the same thing for the right side. This configuration is called the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) setting. Look at the vid again and note the red vertical line that it put on the mirror. It wouldn't be completely inaccurate to say that everything seen in the right side of the mirror can be seen by the interior mirror. Therefore, that left outside mirror can be turned more outward. So when the car disappears in the vid, you would still see it with SAE settings. Keep in mind that many times on a highway cars can be traveling at almost the same speed. That moment in the vid where the car disappears from the mirror before it appears in the camera view, if it was on a highway at that same speed, that car wouldn't be seen. With SAE settings, it would still be in the mirror, likely at least the back half of it anyway. Also, note the camera position in the vid. If that were your eyes, your head would be right up against the window and your chin would almost be touching the door. No one drives with their head in that position. It's hard to determine how accurate this vid actually is due to that skewed view that's used for this demonstration.
