Nautical Map Depth Chart: Inkscape Step-By-Step How To Tutorial (OpenStreetMap Data)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Inkscape step-by-step beginner-intermediate tutorial on how to create water depth contour nautical sea map art as seen on Etsy. In this How-To video the chosen location is Florida, the Florida Keys and the surrounding Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico waters. Follow along in this Inkscape screen capture showing how to:
1. Use OpenStreetMap to download your map data as an editable SVG file.
2. Use OpenSeaMap.org to find water depth countors.
3. Separate coastline from ocean vector.
4. Recolor map and add relief texture.
5. Inkscape Trace Bitmap Tool for multicolor vector separation.
6. Edit - Paste Style shortcut.

Great video. I’m glad I found your channel, you make Inkscape seem easy! I’d love to make a map of lake depths like this that can be cut on a laser. I assume it would be similar, without making the shadow layers and pattern overlay. I’d love to see a video of this sort with Lake Superior. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Inkscape.

Love this Technique Rick. Thanks Mate! Tip for your screen capture tutorial. I always take a screen grab of your color pallet and crop it down to sit next to my canvas as I follow along. maybe this could help your viewers. You could try the Island where I live as a suggestion for your next geography style map. But the Island has a big Volcano in the middle so you might need to time travel a lot to complete all the geographical rings.. ... All the best my friend, Nik 👍🐺👍

Really neat. Here's a trick I learned to get rid of holes: if you do "path-> break apart" on your object, it will separate the object and all the holes, as well as all the islands, into individual objects. Then do "path-> union" to get one object back, but all the holes filled in.

Another great tutorial, Rick 👍. A question for you and/or your viewers, who may be able to help me. Any tips for improving drawing quality, when using a mouse ? Maybe scale adjustment or mousepad surface texture ?? I am far away from any shops and just starting out with Inkscape and will need to get a tablet at some point. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

  • @IronEchoDesign

    @IronEchoDesign

    2 жыл бұрын

Thanks and great, great question. Scale adjustment is a great idea- you automatically get more control. Mousepad choice is smart too. I picked a mouse pad at my desk setup with a thin thickness. Personally, I don't like them to spongy. Not sure how much a difference it makes. When I travel with my laptop, I don't bring a mousepad (does anybody?). Instead I use a book with the cover jacket off. Usually the cover itself has a little texture that provides enough drag to make designing manageable with the mouse when away. Finally, in your computer settings, you can adjust the speed. That can help a lot if the setting right now is speedy. Hope this helps!

Hi there! I'm running into an issue where, when selecting a colored area, the black box that is created is tiny. I can create a bounding box over the area, but I am then losing data in the map. The data I am losing is a lake connecting two waterways. Any thoughts on this? I've tried several different settings but I'm getting the same results every time.

Coincidentally, I'm recording a new map video in a few minutes. I've refined the technique, and should upload tomorrow. In the meantime. When you have the selection made, before deleting hold control and click on the rivers to deselect them from the group. It might be tricky to pinpoint them though.

Thanks! And, I know exactly what you're saying about the scale issues. Bodies of water come in huge. One option that has helped is to adjust the size ratio in OpenStreetMap before downloading. I think in this video I did it my old way of choosing 1:1 and hitting enter. That is good for detail, but can bring in massive files. Try 1:60,000. Or 1:80,000. At some point you'll lose too much detail, but hopefully you can find a happy balance so the file isn't too huge and still looks good.

I guess the takeaway is it's an opensource thing and can fail sometimes [end edit] I realize this is old but the OpenSeaMap, Marine Profile option doesn't seem to work. Now the option is "Marine Profile ( 1:9 20.000)" and clicking it doesn't add depths. I'd be interested if anyone has another source for this info. Or maybe I'm doing it wrong. Thanks
