Thanks rahdo! I watched this review and a few others of yours (top 10 + Nations Dynasties) before buying. This is now our favorite two player game. Great amount of depth, replay-ability, and just enough direct conflict without overdoing it.

It's a small one, but at 11:49 Rahdo says he can't do wars unless he has military units. That's not true, as it seems like a pretty reasonable strategy to buy a War if your military is at zero to avoid "defeat" and is specifically mentioned in the rules. Nevermind - it's mentioned later in the video and I guess covered more in the Extended Play video.

I just bought this game today. Quite excited about trying it out. Even though I already own Through the Ages. Main reasons were the solo rules and that difficulty adjustment - very slick, that.

Just watched this, so I don't know if you want to do anything about it, and it's a technicality, but at ~27:30 when you're re-reconsidering Cyrus the Great, his gold is granted in the Production phase, and not when the colony is bought. I actually made this very same mistake when I was playing Nations for the first time last night. This game is SO GOOD about telling you when you get the things you earned! (And just great all around!)

Another rule you missed is that each player starts on Culture track at diferent values. Player 1 starts with 1 Culture Player 2 starts with 2 Culture And so on. That is to balance player order a little bit

Cool video - Nations is tempting for me as I was looking at TTA recently. I'm curious as to your camera - despite low light, you have crystal clear video. I've done videos with a compact digital camera in HD but always encounter grain - what camcorder do you use?

  • @rahdo

it's a panasonic TM90. after the video is uploaded to youtube, i usually use the "autofix" to adjust the visuals a little bit (upping the contrast basically).

Trust you to use a camera that doesn't exist in the UK! :-) Ah well I can look up the specs and find a similar one - my channel BADLY needs the clarity your videos have.

Though most software's that edit video aren't too good about importing ACVHD videos from a camcorder - presumably you use a converter or some special software (I know for a fact Camtasia Studio doesn't like ACVHD) - how do you get around that?

Luke Hector yeah it is a problem, but i just upload the video directly to youtube which can handle the video no problem. when i had to edit together the cardboard & sun video, i used wevideo.com, which worked, but was kind of a pain (though nowhere near as much of a pain as using youtube's editor, which has no undo!)

Hi, just bought the game and finished going through the rules. From your experience, how much of the recommendations on Page 21 (re. playing with B-sides, the aggressiveness of 2P games and how it's better to play with 3-4 at first, omitting advanced / expert cards, etc), do you believe could easily be bypassed while still providing an enjoyable experience? Do you believe it's that much of a hurdle (especially for more experienced gamers) to dive in without the precautions suggested by the rules?

i think a *lot* of people end up walking away from their first play of nations with a pretty radically wrong impression of it, and i suspect it's in large part because people don't follow the suggestions. that said, we didn't on our first play and didn't have an issue... :)

Can you explain what you are talking about?!? If I understand what you are saying (each player can only take 1 action per round) then I urge you to go back and read the rules... this video was made 9 years ago and it has over 94.000 views, if a rule of that magnitude was goofed don't you think someone would've already said something by now? The Action phase is comprised of SEVERAL actions taken one by one by the players until they Pass!

Anyone know the answer to this: Is there ever a scenario where you are allowed to put a worker back on the Population Track? I think the answer is "Yes, only event cards could cause this"...but I'm not sure...I think this because of the following snippet from the rules: "Some Events increase or decrease the number of Workers for nations. Gained Workers are always taken from the Population Track on the Player Board, and lost Workers are placed back on an empty space there." This question is also out on BGG: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1377328/returning-lost-workers

Can you really dismiss all four workers on a single action? I own the game and I absolutely love it, but this particular action caught my eye while watching this awesome video. I might have missed something while reading the rules, hopefully someone could confirm it's a legit action? Thanks!

ExBruinsFan I don't want to call you crazy... but I have to :p You obviously have to start the game with cards on the board, otherwise you could only deploy workers to the buildings already on your player board... you would waste a whole turn doing that and no progress would have been made on you Nations... also, if you didn't do that for the 1st age there would only be 1 set of progress cards out and for all other ages there would be 2, again it wouldn't make sense! :)

No, you only need your military power high enough to buy it, then it is yours forever (or until you replace it with something better). It is a very common strategy to bump up military for only part of a turn, but it does cost a lot of ore to deploy on Military then on a building.

Kinda disappointed on this one, as it is essentially a card game with placemats. It has some clear call-outs to Sid Meyer's Civ series, but without a map there's no exploration.
