Huge fan of yours Mr. Maridhas Just summarizing the numbers and my own answer to some people on WhatsApp memes We can never measure someone's liabilities unless we compare it against assets. For example In 2014 I had liabilities worth 100 Rs, I had assets worth 1000 Rs. Liabilities was 10% of assets. In 2019 I have liabilities worth 150 Rs, I have assets worth 1500 Rs. Liabilities is 10% of assets. Did my liabilities go up in 5 years? Similarly in macroeconomics we use debt-to-gdp ratio. Government has two types of debts, internal and external. Internal debts are mainly money collected via treasury bonds, mainly in Rupees. So this is no big concern. On the other hand, sovereign debt is debt owned in reserve currency, which in our case is USD. So always the focus is on sovereign debt-to-gdp. And also external debt-to-gdp. With these details in mind, let us look at Modi government performance. GDP (source : World Bank) 2013 : 1,856 billion USD 2018 : 2,689 billion USD Sovereign debt to GDP (source : IMF) 2013 : 46.98% 2017 : 45.11% *2018 not yet available yet External debt-to-gdp (source : RBI) 2013 : 22.4% 2017 : 20.0% *2018 actuals not available yet It's not that India Today, which first published this nonsense statistics, are unaware of these things. This article was a hit job for Congress. Within minutes of this article appearing Congress social media cells shared it, memes were flooding WhatsApp. If they had to show the liability increase in absolute numbers, then they should at least have shown the integrity to compare Modi tenure against Manmohan tenure. Which they didn't do. It actually looks like this Liability increase 2004-09 : 68% 2009-14 : 89% 2014-18 : 49%
