Tautiška giesmė (The National Hymn) is the national anthem of Lithuania, also known by its opening words "Lietuva, Tėvyne mūsų" (official translation of the lyrics: "Lithuania, Our Homeland", literally: "Lithuania, Our Fatherland") and as "Lietuvos himnas" (Hymn of Lithuania). The music and lyrics were written in 1898 by Vincas Kudirka, when Lithuania was still part of the Russian Empire. The fifty-word poem was a condensation of Kudirka's conceptions of the Lithuanian state, the Lithuanian people, and their past. Shortly before his death in 1899, the anthem was performed for Lithuanians living in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The first public Lithuanian performance of the anthem took place in Vilnius in 1905, and it became the official national anthem in 1919, a year after Lithuania declared its independence. Following the occupation and annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union in 1940, the anthem was forbidden to be played or sung in public.
"Tautiška giesmė" was reinstated in 1989 shortly before the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence and confirmed in the National Anthem Act (21 October 1991). It was automatically included as the national anthem in 1992, when the new Constitution was ratified after independence from the Soviet Union was achieved. The status of "Tautiška giesmė" as the National Anthem of Lithuania was further confirmed in 1999 with the passage of a national law stating that.

Former mighty Grand Duchy, Lithuania regained independence after WWI on Feb.16 (not 6) 1918. Lithuania (not ...ainia) was occupied by Soviet Union on June 15,1940, by Germany June 22, 1941, and became part of Soviet Union (thanks to Western Allies and 1939 Aug.23 Hitler/Stalin treaty, treasonably dividing the 3 Baltics and eastern Europe.) It regained its independence with the crash of USSR in 1990, on March 11. Soon after followed by Latvia and Estonia - sister smarts of the Baltics.

I'm really surprised that there is an animosity between our nations. Almost everyone here knows invocation from "Pan Tadeusz" (called sometimes "The secular Bible of Poland"). It begins with words "Litwo ojczyzno moja!" - Oh Lithuania my fatherland! We used to fight side by side for so many centuries! I don't understand why there still are people from our countries that hate each other. Anyways, I wish you and all Lithuanians the best! Well let's see, Poland took over the capital of Lithuania, and has routinely regarded Lithuanian as peasants throughout history. Poland always claims that we are "brothers" we don't have that much in common. Lithuanian derives from Sanskrit. It is indo-European. Not Slavic. A brother for us would be Latvia, Poland would be a co worker from a different department, that we are not on a first name basis with. Also really helps that you have polish schools in Lithuania that suppress the Lithuanian language.

@Anna Kovacs Dość dobrze znam historię. Litwa padła ofiarą agresji sowieckiej i podobnie jak Polska dostała się pod rosyjskie panowanie. Doskonale wiem, że Litwini mają pretensje do Polaków o zajęcie Wilna w 1920, a Polacy pretensje do Litwinów o zbrodnie w Ponarach (Ypatingasis būrys). Nie można zakłamywać historii i musimy o niej pamiętać, ale rozdrapywanie starych ran do niczego nie doprowadzi. Należy patrzeć w przyszłość, a nie wiecznie się na siebie obrażać. Przepraszam, że tak późno odpowiadam, ale rzadko loguje się na YT. Pozdrawiam!

@Anna Kovacs Tylko prawda może być ciekawa, a zakłamywana historia to już nie historia tylko propaganda. Moim zdaniem władze Litwy nie mają obowiązku płacić na naukę języka polskiego, ale z drugiej nie powinny utrudniać jego nauki jeśli mniejszość polska opłaci sobie nauczyciela. Jeśli się nie mylę to Polska i Litwa podpisała jakiś dokument o mniejszościach narodowych. To wspaniale, że powstała inicjatywa z tą szkołą :) Generalnie jestem zwolennikiem powrotu do unii polsko - litewskiej, ale wątpię aby Litwini byliby zainteresowani czymś takim :D

Yes you did-- this language hasn't changed in thousands of years-- it is related to Sanskrit--- how or why, I do not know-- neither country shares a border. (Maybe when someone shot an arrow into the sky at the Tower of Babel, God looked down and said, "O.k.-- the people of India and Lithuania are going to have similar languages..." Ah, the whims of God.
