Nate Morton Drum Cam 26 - 24K Magic
Музыка
With the same caveat as always… here is more video of old man me playing “old man drums”… This time, it’s 24K Magic by Bruno Mars, as performed on our show by Chris Blue. As time goes one, I continue to grow more and more fond of Bruno Mars and his catalog. I have also become more and more a fan of his drummer and my friend Eric “E-Panda” Hernandez. Eric always lays down a KILLER pocket and any fills or licks he plays are always clean, always nailed, and NEVER attempted at the expense of the slammin’ groove. Not only is Eric an outstanding drummer but he’s also one of the nicest cats you’ll ever meet. Stoked for him and all of his success…
Here’s me doing my best to hold it down with Chris Blue on the show, The Voice. Eric, I hope I’ve done the song justice.
Thanks for checking out these vids… as always, just hoping to share a little access from behind the scenes…
I am a proud endorser of the following companies: Pearl Drums & Percussion, Zildjian Cymbals & Sticks, Remo Drumheads, Roland Electronics, Sennheisser Headphones, ePad drum pads, Kelly SHU, WingKey, BFSD, and GoPro.

Too many people don't appreciate the talent behind modern pop music. Especially the nuance behind the back tracks. Just listen to the way the drums, keys, bass, and guitars blend together but produce unique voices and inversions in their various ranges. It's so great. There's a reason music like this is popular. It's well written and VERY well played.

A very good example of "just give what the song needs" type of drumming.

Yeah like sometimes it doesn’t need a bunch of fancy stuff. Just a nice beat
The Lost in Vegas guys came up with a really good analogy. Its like if you didnt know anything about basketball and then you watched Michael Jordan. Understanding the undertone of having to get every song, of any genre, absolutely spot on because it isnt about him but the contestant puts a baseline of pressure that most are not used to. For Nate to handle that, and to so tastefully embellish without overplaying is phenomenal in my mind. This is a true testament to your hard work. Keep the videos coming!

Yes. I love this comment. The sheer quantity of material (various styles, complex arrangements) that has to be absorbed QUICKLY is one of the things that separates musicians at this level from the rest of us "weekend warrior" types. Most of us can get a piece this tight after weeks of playing it, but players at this level can "own" it (along with probably seven or eight others) in an afternoon. Makes me think of Gadd playing Aja in one (or two?) take(s).

An add on to my comment above. I just listened again, this time reading along with Nate's shorthand. Very interesting way to map out a basic arrangement! (so you DON'T have a photographic memory, Nate?)
Such incredible groove, and some of the coolest fills I’ve ever heard!
I love everything about this video. The sound, the look, the groove, the pocket... so crisp, so shiny, just so goooood :3
The master at work. You never cease to amaze me!
LOVED IT!!!! AMAZING, AWESOME... CLEAN without attempts to overtake the band's riffs... respectful... had to watch about five times so far...
Passion, precision and a sick ass grove!! Your killing it Nate, love watching you play, it keeps me inspired and highly motivated. Keep up the great work!!

Nate you have always been and still are one of my favorite drummers of all time! Even back at Berklee watching you perform in 1A to now watching you on The Voice... hands down one of, if not THE, best drummer of our generation. Thanks for posting these videos it is always amazing to watch you work.

Let's not get crazy... lol... but thank you so much... I very much appreciate your kind words... :)
As a drummer I absolutely love how diverse your playing style is. Being able to play literally every different genre type is so insanely difficult. The non-musicians have no idea how different the drumming style is in all these different genres and to basically master them all like that is very impressive. As a sound tech, I'm curious to your mic setup. I believe I saw Sennheiser e604's on your rack toms but haven't been able to spot anything else.
So solid! And the Voice band is top shelf!
Killed it!!!!! I love this song and this version is just as great!

What's up with this exaggeration. That was one of the easiest and most basic of grooves. When i saw the thumbnail of his enormous kit i clicked right away thinking it would blow my mind but sadly all i heard and saw was a simple rhythm section and a waste of equipment. Thumbs down....
@JordanWHuff

Ash Angel simplicity is key! I don’t know who this guy is, or who he plays for. But my comment was simply on the natural groove he has. It’s not all about huge fills, or double bass, or how much you can do. If you ask me, some of the best drummers, are the ones who aren’t flashy, or overdone. They actually sit in there and basically accent the other instruments. This guy is grooving and letting the other instruments flow. The song didn’t call for an incredible display, he knew that.
Swung Kick Drum notes for the win. So tasty.
