    Ugh. This makes me want to pack up all my art supplies and drive to New York ... ;_; I've currently been trying my hand at keeping my own sketchbook, but like Natalie, I have a habit of drawing on loose paper instead of the actual book because I'm afraid of messing up in it. I'm also trying to improve my line quality and cleanup work, since I feel like my 'finished' pieces still look messy compared to quality work. The line art in this book is phenomenal and I hope one day I can achieve such a clean look like this. Thank you Matt for showing us all these amazing artist and the students brave enough to show off their work online.

    The whole point of having a sketchbook is to mess up in it though, I add stickers and paste stuff in it to make me less intimidated :>

    Struggling to work in a sketchbook? I always gravitated towards loose paper but then once, I accidentally spilt water on my (very empty) sketchbook. It destroyed the front cover but it allowed me to not care how the rest of my book looked. Some of my best sketches ended up going into that! Another way to start drawing more in a sketchbook is by using it for observational studies. These are much easier than trying to have clear, defined character designs as you're simply drawing what you see. It'll give you plenty of practise on clean lineart etc for when drawing from the imagination comes about. Hope this made sense and good luck! :)

    I know this a couple of months old, but don't be afraid to mess up in a sketchbook. You're sketchbook is a tool to work out ideas and practice. Keep sketching in it constantly, and you will see that over time your sketchbooks will look better and better. I say this as someone who dealt with the same problem and had to finally let go of that anxiety of creating something I didn't like.

    I don't get how you can't be a fan of Steven Universe if you have a heart. I suppose if you're really homophobic it can be hard to get around the female-only alien race. Or if you hate cringey goofy characters like Steven perhaps. Steven Universe is a really adorable show and it doesn't just speak to a younger audience. A lot of "grown up" topics are touched and to me it doesn't come off as too preachy either.

  • @ioanamaria8279

    @ioanamaria8279

    calarts are extremely picky. i watched a lot of rejected calarts portfolio videos and they were absolutely amazing however for animation for example they require a lot of movement drawing and things as such. no matter how gifted u are, if u don't satisfy their requirements you won't get in, which is pretty fair tbh. plus natalie drew (at least in this sketchbook) a LOT of fan art which, obviously, is not original content, which many universities don't agree with.

    Ehhhh I can kind of understand why she wasn't accepted to Calarts. She's too much of a character designer and not enough of a story teller. Calarts wants people who are super good at making every drawing be able to tell a story on its own.

  • @NataliePellmann

    @NataliePellmann

    7 жыл бұрын

    CalArts wants people who draw for themselves and not what "Calarts wants." Calarts wants artists who are themselves and experiment and my sketchbook prior to this one that I mailed into them was extremely stiff and I over thought what "they would want" rather than what I felt was good enough. There isn't a formula to get into that school and sometimes it's a 6% acceptance rate to get into their character animation program, so it's extremely difficult. I'm guessing Calarts wouldn't accept someone who had entirely storyboards and no character design either. It's very much based on who else applies and trying to get an extremely wide variety of students and art styles. I personally think I limited myself in what I drew in the sketchbook I submitted last year and didn't push myself enough. That isn't to say I couldn't get in this year or the next if I really wanted to.

  • @Burntshmallow

    @Burntshmallow

    7 жыл бұрын

    Natalie Pellmann Well, yeah, but the thing about animation itself is you need to be able to convey entirely what something is about in one picture. That's what I was getting at. They seem to want people, from the accepted books I've seen, who demonstrate the following: Excellent classical draftsmanship, yet those who can easily exaggerate and caricature in their own style from life drawings, They also all share in common the ability to do background incredibly well. Of course there's the ability to convey movement not through the understanding of how the body moves but how to make the movements seem *believable*. There's also generally an immense variation in experimentation, never settling on one specific style. I'm not saying you're a bad artist, I'm just saying this is what I've noticed the successful sketchbooks have.

  • @foxygrin
    @foxygrin7 жыл бұрын

    I'd say she's calarts material, idk why she didn't get in! :0 whatever though. Unlike calarts, I feel like the positivity and encouragement really shines from this specific school and I think that's very important.

    cartoon type drawing is frowned upon bc it shows no depth or realistic form. it may b anatomically correct, but its always over exaggerated. so art schools will not accept new student portfolios that are majority animated in appearance
