I'm actually planning on buying some stickynotes for the same reason. I feel like I rely too much on pencil, and being able to erase. I spend WAY too long on basic sketches because I want everything perfect. I need to stop caring about being perfect in a sketchbook. I'm hoping drawing more with pen will help. I'm trying to kinda "reset" a bit, and start anew. I just ordered a new Moleskine sketchbook. I also ordered me a set of Col-erase pencils. Neither of which I've used before. I'm also trying to make it a habit of adding some color to my pages, even if it's some basic hiliters or something. Adding color isn't easy for me since I'm mostly a black and white artist.

If you use ink some of the darker colours can be great to add a touch of colour without screwing up the values too much, I for one love indigo but sepia is cool too.

i like to use ballpoint from time to time. no under drawing,hand eye. and then use the same pen to do a full cross hatch rendering like jim lee or bernie wrightson. tedious but beneficial exercise for hand eye coordination, value study, light source/shading and planes. after doing a few of those, simple sketches and quick rendering seem to come easier and feel more defined.

What a great sketchbook, it has so much character! When I totally mess up a page, I usually glue in a leaflet from a museum or one of my old sketches that happens to be on a loose piece of paper. I use a tape only on one edge, so that I can still see this disaster, if for some reason I want to. I love the idea of using post it notes - they add so much colour :)

This is amazing! Her work is so original, it's got so much personality, just like her. I loved every page.

She's really good. She's better than the last 30 students you showcased. She'll go far.

I love your sketchbook and I love you, Ariel! :-) You will get the best job when you graduate, I have no doubt. Simply fantastic work, and everything Matt said is true. I think I need to sign up for Tumblr so I can follow you! :-) I have that same kind of sketchbook sitting right beside me. I see a stack of fluorescent Post-It Notes on my shelf, so I think these should go together. (Matt was right about everything.) Oh! And you seriously could self-publish those sketchbooks and I think you'd sell some, if you sold them for a decent price. All you have to do is scan them and upload to Amazon's self-publishing site. (Or many others, I guess. Mat was right about.....)

Love the post it note idea! Trying that in my sketchbook so I will feel confident to experiment with pen. I've only used pencils before cause I make goofs :). QUESTION: Where did Ariel get the idea for using the Post it Notes? I could not make out what she said and would love more info about her inspiration because that is a brilliant idea!

Hey hi hello! I'm not sure if this was meant as a genuine compliment or a sly dig but the character at the time you've mentioned is not 1) a person of color, and I did not intend his race to be such 2) he is just a representation of a watermelon, any racism you've perceived in this is purely perceived and not purposeful in anyway. If it has offended you I'm sincerely sorry as he is meant to be white! please don't go around commenting on peoples' work like this in a way that sounds like a joke

+Ariel Candie The adorable comment was completely sincere; the racism comment was a joke made in reference to the fact that he has the stereotypical cartoon golliwog lips which is somewhat associated with racism, but I assumed the character was an anthropomorphic watermelon that just happened to look black, however one man's swastika is another man's hakenkreuz so you can never be too careful nowadays :\.
