Matt Kenseth took the brunt of the force from every altercation in his career, he was arguably the most level-headed, even-tempered driver on the track, and after all of it, that one move by Joey Logano, that one unnecessary setback, awakened the wrath of the most calm driver. Also, I feel like I should note that the transition element of Denny Hamlin's FedEx 11 moving on screen when you said that the intensity of racing at Martinsville is dialed to 11 was very clever symmetry between the script and the visuals.

In truth, this is a very old-school repair technique that appeals to the "spirit of the machine" or "Anima ex Machina" in engineering terminology. They're punishing the vehicle in the hope that it encourages it to function more favorably in the future. A type of Pavlovian negative reinforcement. This is the same reason that 'percussive maintenance' works sometimes. If the machine spirit it scared of failure, or further punishment, then it will do whatever is possible to prevent such situations again. Think of it as a type of machine learning. A "great" one you missed was the Bodines. Geoff, Brett, and Todd would take each other out for no apparent reason other than sibling rivalry. I understand it got so bad that grandma had to give them a talking to at Christmas dinner.

What's interesting about the Bodines is that Brett and Todd were living under their brother Geoff's shadow since day one. Geoff was a good driver by winning the 1986 Daytona 500, 1987 IROC Season, 1994 All Star Race and won the Rookie of the Year in 1982 and has 18 wins to his name. His best finish for the championship was 3rd in 1990. He's perhaps best known for the scary looking crash from the inaugural NASCAR Truck Series race in Daytona in 2000 which in my opinion is the scariest crash in the entire sport and that crash ties in with Mike Harmons Practice crash in Bristol in 2002 including Michael Waltrips Xfinity series crash at the same track in 1990 in my book. Geoff is also perhaps best known for buying the late Alan Kulwickis team in 1994 by keeping the number and font and Geoff didn't do well being an owner driver in the Cup Series Brett won by a possible scoring error at North Wilkesboro in 1990 when electronic scoring didn't exist until a few years later and win number two never came. His career ended by a practice crash in Michigan in 2003. He too bought a team by NASCAR legend Junior Johnson but the team was being leased to Brett (How do I know this? Well ask good ol' S1apshoes!) Todd was a journeyman driver unlike his brother Brett he won 15 Xfinity Series races and when he drove in the truck series he drove in style! Winning the 2006 and 2010 NASCAR Truck Series championships including winning at Daytona 2008 and 2009 by having 22 wins to his name... I have a cousins wife who has a family member who knew the Bodines in Pennsylvania... The Labonte brothers were a good rivalry between them too! Terry won the Cup championship in '84 and Bobby well Bobby was in the Xfinity Series in the early 90s before moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in the mid nineties during Bobby's career his brother won his second championship in '96 and it wasn't until 2000 Bobby won the championship in a Pontiac. The 2000 Cup Series Championship was also the year that Dale Earnhardt finished second in points... Sometimes I wonder if Dale won his eighth title in 2000 if Bobby wasn't consistent...

You'll probably never see this, but my father died when I was a about three years old. Never got any memories of him, but people talked about how big of a NSCAR fan he was. Nowadays they still can do that but one glaring problem though.... NASCAR is using a 10 minute timer for the crew to work on the car and if it reaches the 10 minute marker they are out of the race... Pretty controversial move...

Never been a fan of Nascar. Never wanted to watch a single piece of media about it. So, why am I watching this? This was awesome. Great story, captivating and engaging. Really brought these drivers to life. I didn't know who Matt Kenseth was before this, now he's a legend.

I watch NASCAR every week

No wonder I dropped off of nascar in the 2010's, I didn't recognize why I wasn't enjoying the races as much as I had in the 2000s keeping one eye on Ernhardt Jr, but this video puts it in hindsight VERY clearly. Never did care for the "sure thing" style Kenseth had going on, but seeing him just PILEDRIVE Logano brought a genuine smile to my face, guy had it coming for YEARS!

Matt Kenseth sounds like the Keke Rosberg of Nascar. Finished consistently to win his championship and yet people don't really rate them. To be that consistent in a sport in which anything can happen, that's impressive.

It’s amazing how people like Emplemon can take such a seemingly niche topic such as NASCAR or high jumps and turn them into half hour long entertaining and thought-proving videos for the masses. There are very few people on this platform who can do that, and it’s a nice break from all the fake, political, drama ridden videos you normally find. Sure, there may be hundreds of people on KZread with much larger audiences. But regardless, Emplemon will forever be one of the greatest of all time. He’s made entertaining content for just about a decade, maturing with his audience. And he feels like a friend in that sort of way. TL;DR: Great work Emp, keep it up!

I was at the 2015 Martinsville race. When Kenseth pile-drove Logano into the corner, the crowd cheered louder than at any other race I've attended. The only Logano fans in the entire place were sitting right in front of us. It was *almost* enough to make me feel sorry for them.

Matt Kenseth is my favorite racer because he teaches us one of the most important lessons in human history. No one is obliged to be nice to you. People are nice to you because they choose to be, so don't take it for granted because no one is absent of choosing differently at any given point.

Montoya was quite a character in all series he's raced in, would love a video just about him

I have never watched a race in my life. This documentary alone not only brought a lot of insight to the sport, it might have single handedly made me a posible fan. Great content and even better delivery. Truly enjoyed it.

As a Jeff Gordon fan, watching Matt Kenseth take out Joey Logano, leading to Jeff’s 93rd and final win, was one of the best NASCAR moments of all time in my opinion.

Its still devastating to this very day that after Jeff Gordon won his 93rd and final win at Martinsville in 2015 many of us thought he would have a fairytale ending career winning the championship at Homestead for the ages to look back on but sadly we were robbed... it still gets me because I rooted for Gordon that day... sure I wanted Truex and Harvick but I picked Jeff to win his 5th championship because he had more experience but when Kyle Busch won the championship I was devastated like everyone else...

It's not my favorite race I've ever seen, but it might be the best race I've ever seen. Cautions, playoff drama, Kenseth vs Logano/Penske as well as Danica vs Gilliland. It amazes me the best race I've ever seen, came from the worst season I've ever seen

I hold a huge respect for Kenseth. Not only was he the most levelheaded driver in Modern NASCAR, but he took out the most big headed driver and cost Logano the championship.

Matt Kenseth has always been my favorite driver. And that incident opened a lot of other fans eyes.

I cheered so hard when Kenseth wrecked Logano. One of the best paybacks ever!

F1: my car's one of the greatest hits of engineering, a literal masterpiece as finetuned as it's humanly possible and tested in so many environments I know how it will behave before it even is constructed. More than a year later and this is still my favorite video of all time

Phenomenal narration on this one Mr. EmpLemon - You deserve an award for making such amazing documentaries for the insane price of 'free'. As many others have stated, I never was really a nascar fan (ive always enjoyed fast cars and racing in general though), but watching this, how could you NOT be intrigued with the amount of storytelling and character building you have on display... top notch stuff man, and truly, one of the main reasons I still endlessly scroll through youtube for 'good' content

Kenseth story is honestly amazing. The most chill guy finally taking revenge on the bully.

Yep and he's one good driver, to the point that a guy like Logano, who people say is "superior", felt the need to wreck him so he would have less chances to win the title. That's how scared the kid was from the "boring" Kenseth. But what goes around, comes around. Nice that Kenseth gave him a taste of his poison.

I'm someone who has always respected but never quite understood interest in sports (particularly motorsports) for as long as I can remember, but watching your videos has really opened my eyes and I find myself extremely interested and drawn to things like Nascar now and I've really been able to bond and get closer to my dad which has been amazing. Thank you so much for the incredible amount of work and passion you put into these videos!

Watched this exact video a half dozen times and will be watching it for the next decade or so hopefully! Thanks for making it, you're good at making these videos and highlighting peak NASCAR means a lot!

This is the second ever video about NASCAR I've watched, I've got no idea how things work but I'm having an amazing time thanks to you! Your video is not just visually pleasing in a way that underlines what you're talking about, the narration and sound engineering was mint quality and, to top it off, it was really well explained and accessible for someone who only has minimal knowledge about motorsport in general. Great work!

As a F1 fan, I really love these little Nascar stories. They really put into perspective how different two motorsports can be across the globe. Both are awesome and exiting in their own ways. F1 is like Ivan Drago, a superhuman trained to perfection. And Nascar is like Rocky, a stone-hard fighter that came from humble beginnings.

As a 20+ year fan of the sport who has unfortunately watched it's long slow decline in popularity, I hope you're right!

Im trying to get into NASCAR and this video really hooks me in even more. Love it!

I’ve never watched a nascar race in my life but the story telling and character building in this video was phenomenal! Made me want to go to a race to be honest, just not something I was ever exposed too.

Seriously though brake checking is severely underused in Nascar they usually go for the trick that wrecks both. When they can knock the other guy out the race and sustain damage to your own car that will have zero effect on its performance.

To me the most fun I've had watching a rivalry in NASCAR would be in the 90's. Dale Earnhardt Sr. vs Terry Labonte at Bristol was my favorite duel I've watched in racing during my lifetime.

This is one of the best nascar documentary that I have ever witnessed. This was just moving and gave me nostalgia form when I was young. Nascar KZreadrs are hard to come by and you are definintly my favorite.

As an F1 fan, its funny seeing drivers make moves that would instantly get them a black flag were it an f1 race.

F1 cars wouldn’t last 3 laps with the degree of punishment stock cars dole out to one another. They’re very different forms of Motorsport with very different rules. The rules are different because contact that is relatively safe in a stock car would kill someone in an f1 car.

I've always had a very mild interest in Nascar, but these stories we're so cool to listen to! The way you told each one was just perfect.

This is an amazing video. The story, the background, the obvious time and lost sleep from the dedication to make this length of a masterpiece, and let us not forget the R E V E N G E ! ! ! I have been educated entertained.

I love car culture, but I never was into nascar. This alone has made a fan out of me. This has has been a fantastic watch . Someone may hate me for this but this is someone who knows absolutely nothing about nascar.. Jimmy Spencer is the man.

The fact that I was invested in this video essay from start to finish, is a proof that you can make people interested in anything with right presentation and pace of information. And I never carried for Nascars as much as i did here. Good work!

I don't even watch NASCAR, but I watched this entire video and learned a lot about racing and the culture within the sport. Very well done!

I grew up religiously watching NASCAR, Ren and Stimpy, and The Simpsons with my dad in the 90s. He is now 70 years old and when I've visited him the past few times we bonded over watching your videos on NASCAR and The Simpsons. Thank you.
