NASCAR 98 - PS1 game review (by a man who knows nothing about NASCAR)

It's about time I got round to a NASCAR game. I've been checking out NASCAR 98, while realising how little I know about America's top racing series at the same time.

Two things everyone who played this game remember, Molly Hatchet “Flirtin’ with Disaster” and the paintball cheat code 😂

This one was actually really solid for an early PS1 NASCAR game. NASCAR Thunder 2003 and 2004 on PS1 actually did quite good upgrade for the hardware limitations. But NASCAR Thunder 2004 on PS2 or NASCAR Dirt to Daytona on PS2 are where NASCAR peaked on consoles (Dirt to Daytona being my personal favourite).

One thing I learned by playing NASCAR on Gran Turismo 5, it's about surviving and being there on the last lap.If you fell behind the pack and out of slipstream (or drafting), you're going to finish last, there's no catching up. 5:33 Lol on Cedar Woods.

@@Adam_OldRacingGames Sure have! Was awesome for the time but I wouldn't come back to it personally. The later Thunder games on PS2 just did everything so much better.

This game looks really familiar. I feel like I must have visited some family friend as a kid and they had this game; this was back before I had video games of my own, so it was always a treat to visit someone and have them pull out a game system and let me play it. For completeness's sake, some of these tracks are completely fake (particularly all but two of the road courses, the real ones being Sears Point and my home track of Watkins Glen), the season at the time was more than thirty races long, Bristol really is a wreckfest and that's why people like it, OF COURSE MARK MARTIN FINISHED SECOND IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS AGAIN, and NASCAR really did do at least one, possibly two, exhibition races at the shortened Suzuka. ...Actually just looked up the '98 season on Wikipedia and apparently they raced at Motegi that year instead. It also astounds me that this game didn't have the Daytona 500. Someone didn't grease quite enough palms, it looks like. How in the world do they make a NASCAR game without Daytona?

NASCAR 98 on PS1 was the first racing game I ever played. This was a nice short review. You should definitely give Dirt to Daytona a shot, that was the peak of NASCAR games at least on console. You get to start out as a dirt track driver and have to work your way up through the ranks and different NASCAR series'. It really gives you a look at the grassroots motorsports in America around that time.

If you do watch a race, i would recommend you start with the one that effectively put the series on the map in America: the 1979 Daytona 500. It genuinely had all the drama and excitement, including a fight at the end! The NASCAR official youtube channel uploaded it; I'd recommend you skip forward a bit (about 20 minutes) after driver lineups, though.

5:06 there actually is no Podium finish for 2.nd or 3.rd in Nascar, there is only place for the winner in Victory Lane. And the best NR games are definitely Thunder 2004, but also 2005 Chase for The Cup and 2006 Total Team Control. Anything after that was either o.k., mediocre or very underwhelming.

games that everyone who wants to learn about NASCAR should play include anything from NASCAR 98 all the way up to and including NASCAR 08 on the playstation 1 and 2, NR2003 if you want full simulation style, and Dirt to Daytona if you want one that has everything you could imagine. NASCAR 08 on the PS3 and xbox 360 are absolutely garbage and I recommend playing them on the PS2 for that reason. another one to check out is NASCAR Racing by Papyrus on the playstation as well. glad you seemed to enjoy this one as it's one from my childhood as well.

Nascar 98 was pretty decent for ea's first attempt on the ps1 I highly recommend nascar thunder 2004 on ps2 because the career mode is amazing However I wouldn't recommend actually watching modern nascar because the points system is so hilariously bad and the races are just 500 mile demolition derbys
