Need to try out the paintball mode in this game and/or causing massive pileups going backwards. Had so much fun with this one growing up.

That was Suzuka East layout that NASCAR used for exhibition races from 1996-1997 if you play NASCAR 99 or something then Motegi oval will probably be in it cause NASCAR raced on Motegi oval for 19998 exhibition race. Oh there’s also a collectors edition of NASCAR 98

In the old games, they were able to put Winston cup in text and even in the prerace segments in thunder 03-04, they just couldn’t use the logo for brand recognition

And they couldn’t use the Busch logo from 05-09, but in 05 and 06 exclusively, Bill Weber does say Busch.

This was the game that made me a NASCAR fan. Used to play a race everyday with my dad in the evening. It would get so heated at times my Mom would take the game away from us both 😅 Edit: best memory was us racing to see who could wreck Gordon first

amen bro, this was my first nascar game too, I was 4 lol, playing this game with my dad is the reason I'm a nascar fan too. He was a gordon fan and I was a bobby labonte fan and I'd hit him with the paintballs. The good ole' days when games were playable.

Do a series where you do a season on every NASCAR game in chronological order. Call it the Radman all encompassing career

Jeff, Mark, Terry, and Dale were tough to beat on season mode

My childhood was spent on this game using the paintball cheat to put Jeff Gordon out of every single race. 😂

That would be the ONLY way to stop Gordon in the late 90’s

The good ole snap oversteer late in the runs was a Haulmark of the early EA days. It seemed like EA only got licensing from the SMI tracks, but not the ISC tracks for some reason until later on in the series.

It’s sad when an old game like this has a track map, rear view mirror, and a fuel meter, but Ignition couldn’t do this. Granted they did show the fuel and tire wear later on, but it wasn’t in the game at launch.

This game along with F1 98 & FIFA 98: Road to the World Cup were my absolute favorites on the PS1 at that time as a 3 year old.

That Sears Point layout is with the carousel. NASCAR briefly returned to it in the late 2010s. NASCAR ran two exhibition races on one of the Suzuka short courses.

Daytona wasnt used in any nascar games up until NASCAR 2001 because SEGA held licensing rights due to their arcade game "Daytona USA"

When NASCAR 98 came out Daytona USA had the exclusive game rights to Daytona

In 96 and 97 NASCAR did hold exhibition races on the East Portion of Sazuka.

Nascar 98 is the 1st and only nascar game officially that you can race on the original atlanta configuration before it was reconfigured to the current atlanta of today

If you start the race and press start go into the race statistics screen and double click R1,R2 and L1,L2 all at the same time you will hear an engine rev sound then when you exit and go back to racing you can tap the triangle button while racing and your car will shoot paintballs at the cars in front of you making them spin...

This was the first game I got for PSone in 1997. I was so excited to play this and would purposely wreck Dale Sr to make my mother mad.

A season mode on this game one day would be great. Had a blast playing it back in the day. Was always tough beating Jeff Terry & Mark

Dad had a PS1 I played on alot as a kid. He had this and Nascar 2000. Used to play both a lot before I got the GameCube and Thunder '03. Been literally 20 years, still the best

The reason Daytona wasn't in NASCAR '98 was because the owners of the track gave Sega the naming and licensing rights to it for it for their game Daytona USA. BTW you gotta try out the original arcade version of Daytona USA it a fun arcade racer.

An easy but cheap win in this game. Go to Bristol, setup the car to have the max handling you can give it. Then just run flat out around the track.

Also: -NASCAR ran the short course at Suzuka in 96 and 97, then the Motegi Oval in 1998. -This game was released with a Richard Petty car replacing the 43 in game -There are two hidden paint schemes, one for EA Sports and one for Pinnacle. You need a cheat code to get them. -Atlanta, Michigan, California, Texas, Talladega, Sears Point, Watkins Glen, Bristol, Charlotte, Pocono, and Suzuka were all of the real world tracks in the game. This also features Pre-Modern Atlanta, and the old Sears Point layout. Texas and California had their Inaugural race in 1997. -24 Drivers were featured in the game from the 1997 season. Rusty and Craven were sponsored by their Team, while in next instalments, "Rusty Wallace", "Dale Jr", "Sterling Marlin" were all the beer cars. -This game uses the same engine as "Andretti Racing" Which featured both CART and NASCAR drivers, and a select few tracks that would be reused in NASCAR 98.

Daytona didn’t give up it’s licensing rights until the early 2000’s. I can’t remember which one exactly but I believe it was Thunder 2002. It wasn’t even in the earlier Papyrus games.

I grew up with nascar 99 and 2000 on ps1

i remember being sick and was out of school for a few days so i rented nascar 98 and street fighter and i played nascar 98 for 3 days straight i was in like 6th or 7th grade LOL

The Nascar games always was weird with the use of Winston cup the announcers in Nascar thunder 03 and 04 will say Winston cup but the logo is just Nascar cup series which is actually crazy to me because that's what it's called today lol

Only bad thing about this game was that it didnt have all the tracks like Daytona Darlington Richmond Rockingham etc

Makes sense if it was because of Daytona USA (even though they didn't use the track itself). Suzuka also marked the very first time ever the Cup Series ran on rain tires (even though it was just practice)

The car tuning was pretty important in this game, especially on arcade physics because your downforce affected speed and cornering so much. Talladega in particular is all about running as little downforce as possible whole still maintaining control.

You forgot they went to Japan from 96 to 98 with Cup and 99 with the West series!

Please do the championship series and pick dale again! I grew up playing this game on the Nintendo 64 and it's so good! You have to actually setup your car for each track. that's why you can't beat any track right now lol

I think the reason Daytona isn't in the game is because the track had a deal with SEGA for the Arcade game Daytona USA so Daytona is absent in NASCAR 98, 99, and 2000 it wouldn't be until NASCAR 2001 when Daytona will be in a NASCAR Game

This and dirt to Daytona are my favorite early nascar games

Agreed F1 98 had a bunch of fantasy drivers (they even stole some from CART like Mark Blundell) instead of the full F1 grid from that season. They also didn't have 4 tracks (Argentina, the Nurburgring, France & Jerez (where the season finale was held)) from that season & brought over a few fantasy tracks from NASCAR 98 like Salt Basin & Cedar Woods & added a few of their own like Empire City which is an NYC street circuit.

Thats not all the drivers at least for the PS1 edition that had inter year updates for 98 and 99 98 is CE and 99 i think is heritage and i know nascar 99 and 2000 where on the N64

I loved the paintball mode where you could shoot at other cars. Also this game had an amazing soundtrack with Molly Hatchett. Defintely better than NASCAR Ignition
