NAS vs RAID explained simple - Complete Beginners Guide

Ғылым және технология

Understand why you need your own cloud storage created with a NAS (Network attached storage). A NAS is the perfect and probably the best storage solution for all your media, videos and data you have.
In this guide and tutorial, I explain what a NAS is and why you need a NAS.
When you have decided to invest in a NAS for your data storage, you need to decide what RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) level you should use for your NAS.
There are many different RAID types like: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID), and SHR 2. And its very important to know what RAID to choose so you don't select the wrong RAID when you are setting up your NAS. In this video, i have a RAID comparison for the most commonly used RAID options.
In this video, I'm using a Synology DS923+ NAS.

SMFH 😑😒 Hi, regular guy here whos cursed with being an educated consumer / shopper / buyer… This shit is overwhelming and whats annoying is everywhere you go people swear by or hate NAS, RAID & weather its SSD & HDD - nothing is ever enough!!! I just need to save some shit somewhere permanently thats reliable so whenever I feel like it I can time travel; Im okay with backing up my back up, im also okay with having a 8TB Memory with 64GB RAM laptop and not using it even though I paid extra for it and instead using an external portable drive (this shit makes no sense for regular people). … I like your accent, keep up the great work, bud. Happy holidays and thanks for tryna make sense of all this nonsense.

thanks for your videos! Can I ask a question? My 213J is finally full, so I just bought a 723+ ( 2x4TB) thinking I can still use the 213j to access those files AND use the new storage on the 723+. can I have 2 NAS work simultaneously? Or should I have bought a 4 bay and transfer the full drives into two of the bay with 2 extra bays? Can you please help? I am so confused! THANK YOU!!!!

Hey thanks for making this! I definitely want something a bit less janky than just multiple external drives I keep swapping out, so RAID seems like the fit for me, and from these explanations I think (to start with at least) I might go with SHR1

Is there a way to plug an external drive in the back of most Synology drives to backup a hard copy to put in a safe?

You lied in your video title. An external HDD is NOT a RAID, and i suspect you know that.

Hello sr. I don’t know if you watched the video but if you did you would know the answer to your question. The problem is that people that DONT KNOW what RAID and NAS is also have no idea if that is an external HDD or not :)This is a beginner level video for people that want to get knowledge in the topic :)

The title doesn't say anything about an external HDD being a RAID. It basically says _"NAS vs RAID for beginners."_ you silly, silly man.
