As soon as you picked up the "weird power connector" I felt old af. PS/2 port was used for mice and keyboards back in the day... I'm only 33 at the time of writing this...

That's not a PS/2 port - it's a DIN power connector, which is along the same lines as a PS/2 port, but a different shape and carries power not data

Thank you for this tutorial. I have two Drobos that died within a month of each other and I just found out they are now out of business. I now am about to set up my new Synology DS923+.

I've just bought my first NAS (Synology DS423+) to replace a Drobo that won't work wih the latest Mac OS. I could not have set this up without your video. Thank you. It was excellent.

Always encrypt anything that can be physically stolen by a burglar. That includes a NAS.

Hi, @MK What’s the maximum storage capacity for a single hard drive and the maximum capacity using all 4 bays? I’m planning on using it to store media content only.

Hi Judy, nice to have you around. 1. It doesn’t have a wireless interface so you would need to connect the cable to for example a router to bring it to your wireless network. 2. Yes it’s built to run 24/7.

Would getting a nas be worth it? I will be taking the i7 7700 and 16gb ram from a different pc and reusing it in a nas. I would use it for cloud storage (because google photos and iCloud sucks) and prob a small mc server.

Lol yeah i used shr1 and mine took about 2 days, but i also added the 2 (16tb) drives at different times (different delivery dates)

Quick question: I looking at work with 4k video files. with this handle the bandwidth for playback on those files? Excellent vid!

How do you connect though with a wired Ethernet connection and not a wifi connection via a router? Lots of videos explain setup wireless but it’s a very slow connection method and doesn’t allow for the 1GB connection speeds. Is it as simple as getting an Ethernet cable and plugging that into the router and into the computer?

You should be able to plug your router into the NAS and then a cable from your computer to the router 👍 Just make sure you use fast enough ports on your router.

Great tutorial. One question - if Synology NAS device itself failed, how do you recover the files in these HDDs?

Then you can basically just move your disks to a new NAS that is compatible with the DSM version you have on the broken one. But, remember to have an off site backup of all your important data :)

Thanks for sharing. I would actually argue that it actually depends… as I tried to explain, different RAID do the file “placements” very different. If you do use a RAID that places the same file on more than one drive is actually a kind of backup of the other. That’s why you use a RAID so you don’t lose the data if one (or possible more) drive-s fail… But I would always recommend an off-site backup to be safe and to have a real backup.
