A nice 8 foot length of rope would solve the problem for those who are challenged by that troublesome lock. Just lash it around the top of the gate end posts and remove it when you're done. Ah, what a length of rope can do for you!

We also had fun in alrewas over the summer. Didnt get to that lock as had to go back to sawley. But overnight there were weird noises on the towpath. Turned out in the morning the boater next to us almost fell out of bed as his boat had listed. When he got out of bed he found the pound very empty and we were starting to list. He found the alrewas bottom lock bottom gates open and with a problen with the top gate paddles the pound was emptying. He had to close them, walk up to the next lock and open the paddles for 30m to refloat everyone. Back to bed at 2am all while we slept.

I could be crazy but it sounded like Canadian Gese in the background. Or maybe all Gese sound the same. But i would not be surprised to learn that someone imported the Canada Goose to England. If that's the case that is pretty cool.

Hi John thanks for your comment lovely to hear from you. It would appear Canada Geese in the UK have come from Russia and the Canadian ones only get as far as Ireland. Sounds like they are quite sedentary and don’t travel far once they get here. Hope that helps 👌

When you have gates that just won't stay closed, crack the paddles just a hair on the other gates to get a little flow before closing them. You don't need or want a lot, just a little to hold them without violently slamming them.

I don`t know if you have visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrawas but it`s definately worth a visit. Just off the A38. One suggestion is to put the date or at least the month the vlog is recorded. As we are in the US and have never been to UK I'm trying to determin, weather wise, when would be best to visit. Tks again

Welcome aboard! Lovely to hear from you and how exciting to know you are hiring a NB. You'll love the experience. Yes understand it can be difficult sometimes to work out the time of weather as we can have beautiful hot days in summer followed by heavy rain and storms the next day. That is the British weather. In terms of best time of year, we love the autumn for all the amazing colours of trees, so that's our Sept/early October but also May and June can be lovely as well. Stay away from July/August when the canals can be very busy with hire boaters. Hope you continue to enjoy. J&M x
