Narrowboat Life: Slow living in the British countryside
A week of slow living in the British countryside on board our 54ft narrowboat! We're in a beautiful spot on the UK canals and so took some time to explore the area and wildlife around us. We also got going with some boat chores, in spite of some very British weather!
For those of you just joining us, welcome! We're Vic and Jo and we've been narrowboating around the UK for the last few years on our 54ft narrowboat Zero. Last year we decided to give up our jobs in the city and add another boat to our fleet in hope of turning it into a travelling cafe and becoming full time boating baristas. We'll also be having a baby in just a few months time!
Follow us as we learn the ins and outs of business on the water whilst cruising around the UK.
If you're embarking on a boaty DIY project yourself, this is the book (the bible) that Vic recommends: amzn.to/3f2C7nJ

And ya know, really, it is skill, and insight, and imagination. And since I'm pushing 60 years on the calendar I'm going to assume I can get away, once, with terming Vic and Jo 'kids', these two kids have got some wisdom about what they are doing with their lives, too. May life, love, joy, health, and making a living, be abundant for them.
🤣🤣 What a fun innovative start to the vlog! Thank you Vic. N.B. I am a personal friend of Don Nicol of Palermo so will get him to send his heavies round for protection. Nobody kills our friends! You two really are a little ray of sunshine amongst all that miserable rain. Greater vlog moments than "canal water & a dirty sponge" I cannot imagine! Too entertaining that one was! Jo, carrying your baby gives you all rights to headaches, barometric or otherwise, crying for no reason, and sittin' on your ass tellin' Vic to handle whatever needs doin' while you preserve your strength to do your best work: bringing your healthy baby into the world. Vic, you're a real mensch of a man and perfect at pickin' up the slack. And with canal water and a dirty sponge you can't go wrong. Just love following you two! ❤️ You're funny and fun and bring me good cheer! 😂 Thanks! 😍
I was still laughing from your intro. when the beautiful quiet morning sunrise appeared. Lots of mood changes, kind of like your weather. Loved the dialogue, filming, editing and honesty. Thank you.
Canal water and a dirty old sponge literally had me in fits of giggles 🤣😂🤣😅
A hat is essential Narrowboat wear as keeps the sun out of your eyes and prevents spiders getting in your hair when going through trees! Great vlog
Brilliant intro Vic. Whew, would really like the narrowboat life but setting yourself apart from other KZreadrs is quite the challenge. Don't be surprised when Liam shows up for double espresso. Cheers!

Used to think of you as Jo and Vic (yes, your wife gets top billing 😜) but now I will always think of you as the nomadic, floating barristas. Take care and see you next week 👍
I look forward to your videos every week. Vic is hilarious, but Jo was on fire in this vid too! If I lived in the UK, I'd totally want to hang out with you guys. Cheers to you both, and thanks for always making me laugh. :)
When we are having a baby our whole 'us' changes on what we feel and see. Welcome to been a Mum, it is one of the most wonderful things in the world.......obviously with Vics help. Xx
Now that's was a bit of different video guys, deep in places then Vic's humour breaking the mood. Keep the video's coming each one is always different.
Your production values are on the way up. This one will be a tough vlog to beat in that regard. Some fine shots guys.
The transition from the data rush to the rain was brilliant. Actually the whole vlog is brilliant. Love you two and you make Saturday mornings here where I live, worth looking forward to.
"Canal water and the dirty old sponge" is what tipped it for me. I subscribed and hit the notification bell! You have such a funny way of being together. The stuff about "what my mum told me" is classic! And to top it all, brilliant cinematography. You are just getting better and better. Love it!
Brilliant, really funny and nostalgic especially the old dialup for the internet. X
Loved the opening. The tree levelling is usually deer the uniformity is because they can only reach so high or so i was told as a child.
You should buy Skip-Bo to play. That be a goodly game. I think this episode ranks in my top 3 to watch so far because there's no stress of the work or having to do stuff. It's also shown us, the viewers, the love you share for each other that shows in your banter, smiles and quirky chat. I wish we had canals in Australia.
Well that was different. It had a bit of everything yet it all flowed nicely into one entertaining vlog. Thank you.
Jo, Vic, Loved this week's Vlog. Great story-line. Loved the start of the Vlog (made me smile). Great visual/sound effects. Lovely to see you walking about and chattimg, even in the rain, and its so relaxing. Excellent production. Take care.
"Bottle Lodge. Last inhabited 19:28" That's almost half past seven....... Thanks for another lovely video. There were some really stunning sky and cloudscapes there.

Talking about being active and doing a spot of active foraging, just think, this 2/3 of the way here son is going to be born in to an environment where activity and exploration and connection to the landscape and the sky is the norm; and if that's not a blessing I don't know what is. :)

Stunning scenery…loved your advert for canal water and a dirty old sponge 🧽!!
Again, your videography and editing are superlative, not to mention your commentary, but without question the next great British sitcom must be "Canal Water and a Dirty Old Sponge" !!!
The only way to guarantee rain is to wash and wax the car, at least where I live. That's it! You Brits must be insane about keeping the cars and boats clean and shiny. That's why you have so much rain! I enjoy watching your antics, and loved your spokesperson ad.

Your weekly programs are a true joy to watch. Some time almost a planned TV show, with funny skits, outdoor adventures with goats and sheep and small spikes coming out of the ground, old fruit turned into tasty refreshing drinks, finger sandwich's and a very pregnant woman. Add cake and coffee and you have created the best comedy narrowboat show on KZread. Love you guys. I really think the both of you together could do stand up comedy. Or at least a groovy boat washing show.

Hiya, you two are so enjoyable. Great video. I like that hat too.
Thanks guys, I really enjoyed this vlog and wish I could be in a narrow boat and out on the cut too

Absolutely superb photography, stunningly good.
Thank you for taking me along on your walk.... relaxing... very enjoyable.
The small octagonal building you visited with the ogee roof mirrors the corner towers of a large 16th century gatehouse, which unfortunately no longer leads to anywhere. The former country house was finally demolished early 1900’s after many attempts to rebuild it.
As a wanna-be narrowboat owner I subscribe to many narrowboat vlogs. You always keep things fresh (never know what I am going to see next:)) and I always finish watching with a smile. Thank you for taking me on such a lovely journey x
Your videos are so fun and entertaining to watch. You are such a lovely couple always laughing and smiling and having fun, I am sure it's a lot of work having two boats. But I have to laugh , I put my phone on the table and have to raise the top with a little cardboard and at the bottom tape down the charging cable to the table and wiggle it until its in the right spot for 7 hours to just charge it. Lol. I hope you both can have a relaxing week before your little bundle of joy comes into your family. Wishing you all the best and happy crusing and much success on the Cafe Boat!! Wanda
Sometimes I haven't the foggiest idea what you are talking about. But, even when I have to go back repeatedly to figure out what you are saying, I still enjoy your videos, even when I fail to understand and sit here with my head tilted sideways, they are so enjoyable. Like the last conversation of this vlog. I was lost but enjoying it anyway. Thank you for that!

@@margaretwhite1724 Right? No, they have a very abstract and fantastical, remarkably dramatic sense of humor and a sense of the absurd. It's wonderful. Occasionally, though, if a key word is muffled or unfamiliar, he gets ahead of you. Which is why you think it is your hearing. I think that child is going to have a delightful raising up! Here's hoping that the baby inherits the humor and appreciates the theater. I can see both of them wriggling their noses and taking on a little hoppish limp when reading him Beatrice Potter. But, some of the grandparent who is least likely to gift him his first superhero cape has gifted him some of their stoicism to balance it all out. And, who knows? Vic may take his child's future so seriously that he becomes rigid in his planning. I can't see it, but then i haven't seen him as a father. I say he because she says he, though I saw a she for whatever reason. I suspect I am projecting. Hey Vic! If you spot a mumble in your edit, give us a voiceover to clarify! (please?)

Brilliant laugh out loud vlog, guys! Thanks for sharing your lives and for bringing laughter to this world! xx *And yes, Jo, barometric headaches are a real thing....
What a great opening introduction. Loving it 😂❤
That's one rock solid obelisk, its stood the test of time, worth the price of admission in fact it would be a bargain at twice the price and would, without a shadow of a doubt, clean up beautifully with splash of canal water and a scruffy old sponge! But wait!! There's more!! If you ring in the next three minutes we will double the canal water, you just have to pay the shipping and handling! PLUS there is a money back grantee, you just have to pay a small re-stocking storeage fee,...until there is room to put the water back in the canal!
The editing on this one is top notch!
Love the video. You both are so down to earth and I love your personalities.

not sure if its been mentioned but the flat line under the parkland trees is called a brouseline - cattle and or sheep will graze the lower leaves and branches each year only as far as they can reach so all the trees have a uniform lower branch level -) 🤓

I predict an influx of sponsorship offers after today’s performance …. Bravo 👏👏. If you see a very tall Irish Man walking towards the boat pretend to be out.
Hello you too, glad to see your looking so well, we on the Leicester ring at present, I gave up putting on and taking off my coat between heavy showers and thunderstorms, too hot to wear, as soon as rain stopped clothes dried on me in 10 mins😂 hope to see you soon xx Karen and Paul
That’s the one thing I don’t miss about not living in Britain anymore. I used to drive an old Land Rover with a canvas top and there was one year when I could not leave the house without the roof of the truck installed because it rained every single day. Here in Ontario we are pretty much guaranteed hot, long, sunny summers.
Trees look like they have been neatly trimmed like that underneath because cattle eat the lower twigs, as high as they can reach, which is a pretty neat and standard height. I love your channel and your great sense of humour. Oh and it is a real thing, I get barometer headaches too, they are a real thing, all tied to air pressure. Thanks for a great channel xx
Congratulations everyone. Well done to everyone concerned.

I can't tell you how much I look forward to your videos! It definitely brightens my day. When our kids were young, I was given a sourdough-type starter to use. I don't know the chemistry of it, but I would make an amazing variety of things with it, not just bread. Oddly, it was called HERMAN cake starter. I made sweet bread, a coffee cake, pancakes, etc. My family loved it. Maybe you could experiment turning it into treats that you could sell on Holly! The coffee cake was really yummy. I added fruit to it when I had some on hand. Rhubarb was really good as were blueberries and peaches. Maybe it would be a good option for Holly. Thank you so much!!!! Sue in Florida
