Hi… Originally the Blacking was just Tar or Pitch and when it was being painted on it had to be heated up a lot ( in old photos you would see various buckets dotted around the Boat on the fire or braziers being heated up ) it had to be heated because it was more of a solid state when cold ( just what you need on a Narrow Boat). The temperature and humidity is pretty important when painting the more modern paint ( blacking ) ,obviously steel is a cold surface and you will have hot spots and cold spots,old saucepans come in handy for the process of decanting from the big paint container. You have two options :- 1 : Heating up the big tin on a portable gas Hob using a diffuser on the flame so it doesn’t burn the bottom of the Tin,you then use your saucepan to get a pan full and either use a brush ( preferred ) or put that into a paint tray for the roller ( not cheap tray’s but metal ones as they hold the heat better ). 2 : Decant the blacking into the saucepans and warm them up using portable hobs ( No diffuser necessary ) and use a brush ( because the blacking is hot it goes on lovely and smooth and will start to set/dry as it cools down ). Boatyards have done it this way for years and it is a lot quicker and you will actually use less blacking than if you did it cold. Top Tip if you are going to do it Cold, you must make sure that the brush or roller is loaded as much as you can with blacking,it’s the complete opposite from where you would be painting a wall say,if you don’t have enough paint on the roller or the brush you will " Drag " the coat off beneath from what you are painting. Great video ❤

Great job. Why doesn’t the base plate get painted? The tunnel bands look awesome - fantastic painting there Jackie!! 😊
@EQINOX187
Жыл бұрын
Generally you are supposed to do the base plate also however many do not as most places you can pull your boat out the water do not have stands high enough and so comes the hassle of finding a place that can, there is also a bit of a misconception that you never have to because the base plate should be at least 10mm thick and so will last for ever and will constantly rub on the canals floor and so any new blacking will simply rub off and while this is true on poorly maintained canals with bad sediment build up it should never be the norm to scrape.
@cruisingontheborder
Жыл бұрын
Hi.’ We chose not to black the base plate on this occasion but we do the base plate every other blacking. As Eqinox says, many choose not to but we do but only every other time. 👍❤️

@EQINOX187

@@snowflakemelter1172 You are utterly incorrect and clearly clueless, standard UK specifications for canal construction going back many years is they there are at a minimum 4.5 foot deep with the UK average actually being closer to 5.5 foof, the average narrow boar will sit 2 to 2.5 foot into the water meaning that at any point a narrow boat will have over 2 foot of clearance at minimal, so no the base will never scrape the bottom, but as i mentioned there are a few poorly maintained areas that have not been dredged and you might scrape the bottom but this is soft sludge and mud but this will not remove the blacking. The fact you do not know this and are saying "no point painting the base plate is evidence to ignorant and clueless you are and i am willing to be you have not owned much less maintained a narrow boat

ARE You using Two Pack, If not that's what you shod be using on once and then no more
I'm sure your blacking problem was due to the low temperature. The manufacturer provides a temperature to drying time table and below 10deg C it takes a long time, it's not a winter job or even spring come to that. Did you remember to treat the inside of your weed hatch? I think the colour of the Tunnel Bands goes back to the preference of the various carrying companies but now is a matter of choice, it does help visibility in bad weather/tunnels. Enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.
@cruisingontheborder
Жыл бұрын
Hi Ah.. no I forgot the inside of the weed hatch! Next time.. We are pretty sure it was a temperature thing that caused the blacking issue. Several other boats were blacking at the same time though without probs so maybe it was just us. We got it sorted in the end though. 👍❤️

Some I've seen have colored triangles like red, blue, yellow for example, on the top of a post mounted on the front. Others have multi-colors on the top trim along the bow. I was wondering if you may know if they mean anything. They look like they could be something used by boats in the past to indicate what kind of cargo they carried or maybe the area they were from or... ? Thanks!
