My wife is buying me a set of the premium chisels with a 3mm and 50mm extra for my birthday. They will be my first set of half decent chisels and I have to be honest I’m less than confident putting a hollow grind on them. I’m only just getting a truly sharp edge. We get the premium in a box here in the U.K. A brilliant, honest and extremely useful review, thank you very much for making it.

I have recently had the premium set of 8 bought for me for my birthday, I already had the 3mm, 40mm and a 3/4” paring chisel. I have no idea why the paring chisel is in inches but as a 59 year old Englishman inches make more sense to me. Narex say on their 'fan' site that because of the way they are tempered and profiled it takes a couple of sharpenings to get the best out of the metal. It’s really worth the time and effort to set them up, I followed the Lie-Nielsen video for setting them up though I went up to a 12000 whetstone after the 8000. I’m fairly new to woodworking and I'm not at the level to build a Queen Anne dresser yet. Thus far I'm really happy with these chisels and as I have arthritis in my hands I really like the handles on the premiums. I only ever use a carving mallet on them and they are still like new, I use my old cheap ones when I need/want to use a hammer. An excellent, and in my opinion a very fair, review. Really well presented with all the bases touched and well explained, thank you.

There's not a whole lot of difference in the steel (I think rc 58 or 59) - but the profile is different - the premium bevel on the sides to much thinner so they are a little easier to get into corners of work. Check out Highland Woodworking's website for more info on them, including profile pics of the difference.

I like the Narex but what brand do you have, your high end chisels that you were comparing to at the end. And can I buy the high end chisels at Highland I appreciate the information.

The chisels used at the end of the video were the Blue Spruce Toolworks Bench Chisels. We carry the Blue Spruce Toolworks Dovetail Chisels at Highland Woodworking: www.highlandwoodworking.com/blue-spruce-toolworks-set-of-4-dovetail-chisels.aspx

I would say to knock the edges off the mortise chisels as they are so sharp they will cut you.

Good video, but never grind it on bench grinder! Just take as it is from factory and keep original bevel flat no hollow or convex and your chisel will cut even better than you shown + stropping on leather strop with some good compound and it will be perfect! You can use a power strop and buffing wheel to get better polish and to get it razor sharp quicker while you are working, but that's all! You don't need any other power tools!
