Thank you so very much! You describe a narc far better than I could and I have lived with one since 1955. I wasn't aware of him being a narc until a little over a year ago. I had thought he was similar to his Dad, never thinking it was narcisium I was seeing. One day I became aware!! I'm glad I did.

It is, also extremely destructive for the person on the receiving end of the abuse. At worst, the victim is reduced to self harm.

30 years of my life, the best years off my life, I now understand, I gave to the dark triad. 12 of those years, in deep mourning for my only sibling younger brother, fighting and drinking everyday kind of kept my own demons at bay. Now that I'm eventually out of the grave, me eye's are clear like water, thank you Dr. I am following your lectures diligently practicing and trying to pass on the knowledge you are giving me. It's very hard to realize the truth about ones family. Gave full control of my life to my parents & they took advantage of me & taught my siblings to do the same & today claim is I've caused all the qaos from day one. I wonder which place & time was day one 🤔 Being selfless, caring, loving & trusting to some means helpless, weak, lost, unable, stupid, fearful or just plain crazy...a free for all. I wish I'd known all this years 😞

The segments on narcissism were all superb. I learned from the series that a close family member, someone I've known all my life, is a classic 'covert' narcissist. This person checks six of the nine criteria. I was always mystified why this person always treated me so badly. I am not any longer. That person was and is a narcissist. It was a relief to hear an explanation for this decades long behavior. Thank you, Dr. Magee, and Bravo.

In my experience, it's like picking up a stray dog on the highway because you're a good person, and then you get a few miles down the road and you notice that the dog's eating all your groceries and shitting all over the floor, and when you try to correct the dog, it develops a shitty attitude because it says you don't appreciate what a good job it's doing driving the car.

I had a narcissistic father. His weapon was verbal abuse. My brother is also a narcissist. His weapon is to ignore me and ridicules me in front of others and my child. Last but not forgotten is my younger sister. She too has inherited this disorder. I need this info. Thank you. The reason I'm writing this is because I need help. I have a therapist. It's not helping.

Thanks for this video. I’ve been married for 5 years and have really been put through the ringer with my wife’s behaviour. I have a 6 year old daughter who basically has no relationship with her mother. I recognise a lot of these behaviours although some don’t seem to apply due to cultural differences. The thing that always amazes me is the ability to lie and change the reality of past behaviour/actions even in the face of evidence to the contrary. I literally cannot tell when she is lying even if I know for a fact that she is. Drug abuse, scamming money , explosive and overly dramatic behaviour and incredibly self entitled. The worst part is the complete lack of bonding she shows with our daughter. She left my daughter and I for 1.5 years because the uk didn’t suit her. The issue I have is that after 7 years together I sometimes question whether I’ve just been jaded by all this and as she says, only see the worst in her. I’m a fairly strong character and I am aware of some of the manipulation tactics used but even so, I still question myself and whether I would be doing what’s best for my daughter by kicking her mum out.

Whenever I hear the term “Cluster B”, my mind always hears it as “Clusterf*&$” instead. 🙄

The narcissist I’m in regular contact with tries to put me under the spell that I, myself, am self serving, no matter how much work I do. When I clean the kitchen, for example, it just gets done rain or shine. When this person does it, it quite often a victimization, “I’m the ONLY ONE that puts cups in here… closes the blinds, wipes the toilet etc”. They rarely do housework and when they do it’s almost as if they want a medal for it. It’s very difficult to manage. They request more and more from you and whatever you offer becomes the baseline expectation. You may cook them 20 meals and they’ll cook one for themselves and leave you scraps and claim they cook for you “all the time”. Anytime I bring it up, it’s often projected that I am delusional and just make things up. It’s exhausting.

The problem is that are mundane, ordinary looking, average on the surface. Narcissism is not obvious. You can’t see any of these grandiose traits at first, they seem ‘nice’ & a little sad if anything. you feel sorry for them being so bland, beige, and ratter boring It’s shocking to uncover the secret traits with such an ordinary looking individual.

Thank you for your informative videos. I am a new subscriber. I like to know more about the term 'performative empathy'. I know someone who is always seemingly lovely - but who is not quite the person people think they are and this has always confused me.

I feel a great sense of emptiness but ive never been malicious but i often wonder if i am a type of narciscist i percieve my sense of self via acomplishments or lack thereof i think deeply about the people around me. i disconnect from engaging with life a lot. i often try to help others when i see them in need but also try not to wait for any praise. i feel uncomfortable being praised but i ilke when someone says a simple thanks

Thank you as all your videos are excellent and in depth, unlike any others. It is difficult to find details about the structure of narcissism and its many tentacles as many people that are putting forth videos on it, are ones that have experienced it and they can be very emotional, although, rightly so. I find it perplexing that there is this pattern of the brain getting stuck. A Narcissist is stuck on themselves, a histrionic is stuck on attention seeking, a paranoid delusional person is often stuck on fear. In addition to this, the spectrum disorders can have this happening as well in over focused ADHD a person becomes stuck, in autism/aspergers syndrome, one is getting stuck on repeatedly stacking blocks and the like, as a child, and in OCD a person becomes stuck on a variety of different things. We know that in the brain, that region where people get stuck is the Cingulate system, and shouldn't that mean that we take the approach of ensuring the integrity of the health of that region of the brain. I understand there is conditioning, and that is a huge factor. But, what if the cingulate system is susceptible to getting stuck, and whatever is prominent in someone's life from their family/friends/workplace plays a role in what they become stuck on. For example, the influence of television/hollywood on a person with histrionic personality disorder and attention seeking. Because certainly our spheres of repeated influence from these sources play a profound role.

Thank you Dr Darren for your informative, well explained videos. They are helping me greatly. I think my husband of 23 yrs and sadly 21 yr old son tick all 9 criteria! I actually feel relieved now that I understand why I have felt so depressed & confused for so long and suffering from this horrible trauma bond. I’ve passed my limit of being their target for Narcissistic abuse now. Marriage counselling has failed of course, looking to break free.

I believe I have a narsasistic disorder ,my father and mother were. I'm scared. They are dead now,my sister's are younger, and both have addiction problems. They drive me crazy and can't help them. lve been in counciling,but not now , lost it., because of covid.

I believe NPD is not actually a personality "disorder," but a SPIRIT. The things the covert religious Narcissist (who is no longer in my life) said to me (the name calling and false accusations), were nothing short of demonic.

I love your videos. You are probably my favorite explainer of these things. Thanks so much. I have a question. My mother in law is a covert narcissist (as diagnosed by me). My wife is not a narcissist, but I do think that she often demonstrates the traits of her mother. It is challenging for me to deal with all this behavior, but I try to be patient. So here's my question. How many of these traits are simply behavior she picked up from her narcissistic mother (or sociopathic father), and how many are traits that are born of such pathologies within her? While I'm sure you cannot know for certain in her case, I would appreciate any insight you may have into the degree to which narcissistic traits tend to get picked up by children raised by narcissists.

I'm free now three years I have a massive job now to try to pick up my adult children. Daddy is good. I say nothing no contact. We are now just able to cope. It has been racked up this week, father/ husband never said an honest Sorry ever. This week youngest daughter told me father said to her ". I was a horrible Father". Oh please he has updated his game. He must be bored sitting alone, trying to manipulate children who are loving but innocuously caring. and does his every need shopping etc. Cruel we are trying to relax and get on with our lives. He's upped his game after 3 years of peace and stability. How much damage can he inflict I can't say a word against father. I know I have had my integrity and simple human mother trashed.

I took a test and so did my spouse his final number was 17 and mine was 6. Is 17 a pretty good amount of narcissism?

My son has this disorder and pretty much only interacts with me and a couple friend (he’s in his 30’s). It’s difficult for me when he has almost instantaneous mood swings as we talk/text and uses disrespectful and abusive language. Listening to your video helped me understand a bit more.
