@@dutchvanderlinde4722- It’s a Martin Scorsese movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Robert De Niro, and it’s about the FBI being sent to investigate the mysterious murders of members of the Osage tribe in the 1920s. Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Gladstone are also in the movie. It comes out in October and Apple financed the film (along with Napoleon.)
Things that should have been changed about this movie imo: 1. More Battle, Less Josephine. The trailer attracts us with epic scenes of battle and glory that we’d associate with Napoleon, exciting calvary charges, firing on the ice, but the main plot really revolves around his relationship with his first wife, and her impact on his life. 2. Better portray his rise to power. The coup scene was hilarious and great, but the transition to Napoleon being a military leader to an arrogant leader is too swift. I wanna see him earn it, I wanna see him getting dirty and aiming the cannons himself, and gaining the respect of his men, and they did deliver with the fort scene, but after that we rarely see any honorable actions by Napoleon. 3. Expand more on his downfall. Napoleon comes back from his first exile, and we immediately cut to Waterloo. It’s a great battle scene, but part of what makes his downfall so great is the betrayal and politically scheming going on by the monarchs around. His own brother betrayed him after being appointed by Napoleon as King of Sweden, if I recall, maybe more drama in that department would have been good. 4. Show more of Napoleon winning. I, at least, came to see Napoleon bring Europe to its knees, and while we do have some of that, there’s just not enough. There’s just way too much of Napoleon and his wife, let me see him divide and conquer, destroy his enemies in more than just montages. I mean come on, his tactics and strategies were the _basis_ of most militaries after him. 5. We needed a better portrayal of his death. Show us the sick, disheveled, and depressed Napoleon that was in his last exile, not him with a grey beard and uniform, suddenly slumping over. Especially because they tell us his true last words after, despite just depicting them completely differently. Overall, they focused a little too much on Napoleon’s personal life and drama, and less on the legend that _is_ Napoleon. Of course, I’m looking at him through romanticized, unrealistic glasses, but that doesn’t matter when I, and I believe most other people watching, came to see that. It’s fun to pick this movie apart, but you have to take into account how much history, and how many events a buffed up story of Napoleon would have. The runtime would be around 4 hours. They did a good job, Joaquin Phoenix is great as Napoleon, the cinematography is beautiful, but story and plot wise, if definitely could have been improved. That’s my take, at least.
@katerinaaqu
5 ай бұрын
I think that was the point. People do focus a lot on Napoleon and his rise to power or his general skills but I think this film wanted to portray more his personal and love life than his general capabilities. I think as a general rule Joakim Phoenix likes to give this psychological twist to the character. I am also not surprised they didn't elaborate much to his death either. I think they mostly wanted to focus on his personality in his everyday life rather than the personality of the leader we see on the outside

I can't wait to watch Napoleon, it's a great movie.
Despite the criticism that the movie has received, and it being for the most part valid, I think the movie was great. I left the cinema with my breath still heavy from the scene of The Battle of Austerlitz and my heart still in my throat from the scene of The Battle of Waterloo. While it might have not been as historically accurate and battle-oriented as this trailer suggested and we expected, it did Napoleon’s legacy justice with that exact feeling of shortness of breath and your heart in your throat. The movie was exceptionally made. Wonderfully cast, fantastically acted by Joaquin, phenomenally scored with tracks perfectly fitting. The cinematography of the film kept me in awe with each new set introduced and the realism of each and every single gory detail never failed to make gasp at least a little. The film might have not told Napoleon’s story perfectly accurate, but it did get the greatness of his legacy across. And I think, that for the people that do not have as much historical knowledge to be able to point each inaccuracy out and ruin it for them, this movie showcased the great impact of Napoleon enough. A great movie for a great leader.
@josefavomjaaga6097

What exactly was the legacy and the impact of Napoleon then, that the movie showed? I mean, what impact did Napoleon have on history?
@user-tv3hi2wy8h
2 ай бұрын
@@josefavomjaaga6097 Well, at LEAST the impact of the wars he led on the population of Europe, which were shown before the credits. That is the most obvious one. Apart from that, though, the overall message of the film was the reason to make the film itself. I can confidently say that for people who might have not known much about Napoleon before, after watching the movie they definitely do have at least an idea about the massive importance that he played in the world’s history. I showed this to my grandfather who solely knew that Napoleon was a French leader and somewhat famous, and after finishing the movie, he said he never knew he was that big. So that is what the movie showed, and while it could have shown more, I think it’s enough.

I like Joaquin in terms of acting ability, but he's way too old to portray Napoleon before 1812, much less before becoming emperor. The man is literally three years younger right now than when Napoleon died on St. Helena. He's older than when Napoleon fought at Waterloo. Honestly, someone like Adam Driver might have been able to make it the whole film (assuming that it's going from the execution of Louie XVI to his coronation, about eleven years) without seeming too old or young sans any touch-ups, but even that's kind of a non-optimal pick. It'll still be decent. It's Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix. I'm just annoyed. Also, Napoopan was 5'8". In the 18th century before modern nutrition science or even modern farming where famines still occured with reasonable frequency, that was a perfectly respectable height as opposed to being a borderline manlet.

Even in the battle of Waterloo there were more Prussian (German) troops then British ones. And those troops turned the tide. Still it's so often overlooked...

From what I've read, the whole "German problem" does not figure in the movie at all, with the one exception of a battle of Austerlitz depicted utterly wrong. No Prussian campaign either? Let alone the Rhinebund - it is to be noted that half of Germany actually had (secretly, more or less) sided with the _French_ when the war of 1805 broke out. Prussia had kept her neutrality since freaking 1792, factually supporting Napoleon's rise.
