I have a Legend 485 series with Infrared side burner. Pretty sure I bought it about 25 years ago. I hadn't used it for the past 2 years or so and it sat outside uncovered through 2 winters. I have never replaced anything on it and was thinking about buying a new one. When I looked at them similar models are going for $1600. So I took a good look at it. The outside has no issues at all. Just needs to be cleaned. I have ordered 4 new sets of burners / heat shields. Today I took the ceramic burner apart and cleaned it up (The screen like yours is of course totally gone). But the ceramic itself seemed to heat up pretty well. after seeing your video though I am going to give it a much better vacuum to see if I can get any more debris out of the actual holes. Waiting for my new burners to arrive next week and I figure I will have a like new BBQ once I am done. There are a few other parts I want to replace such as the catch-all unit at the bottom. I have seen where you can purchase the screen for the side burner but I have yet to find any info on anyone that has actually replaced it. Can't wait till my new burners (Napoleon OEM) arrive on Tuesday!

You Canadians have some wonderful devices I have never seen one of these BBQ ceramic plates in Australia so it's really news to me maybe we have them and not being a BBQ man I just haven't seen them what a great idea Of course I have seen them as heaters attached to the wall I guess you could also hit it with a blow torch and burn off the fat and impurities also

These run about 1800' F so fat drippings are burned off completely. What isn't burned is salt that is rubbed on the meat before searing. It falls on it, becomes molten and eventually clogs the ports requiring it to be scraped off.

@@bert1450 Thank you for pointing out it's manufacturing origin. But I never said it was made in 🇨🇦 Canada. All I said was YOU CANADIANS HAVE SOME WONDERFUL DEVICES, implying I had never seen them in 🇦🇺 Australia.

Thanks for this post! Do you have any suggestions as to how to clean the grease from around the enclosure? Also, are there any tricks about how to remove and replace the unit when it finally fails? (Sorry if you covered the issue of the grease-I noticed your comment about the grease but I could not find either written or verbal comments…)

It's pretty self evident on how to remove and replace. There are 2 screws that hold the side burner in. Remove them and the side burner lifts out for replacement. I'll be changing mine again soon as it is getting to EOL.

How did you remove the screen? For my unit (circa 2021) it seems that the screen is integrated with the ceramic burner (i.e., non-separable)?

The screen does not come off. Mine rusted through and fell off. So no screen just the burner.

Where do I know your voice from? Driving me crazy trying to place it. Were you previously a tv or radio broadcaster?

I did many a product demo video over the years where I did the voice over work. Some of these "infomercials" did make it to broadcast. What is funny is I was talking to the bank recently and they informed me that they use voice ID to verify that they are talking to the customer and I told her that my voice is all over the internet as I do video work so anyone can access my voice from youtube so it probably isn't a good idea to use voice recognition as anyone could record my voice and edit it to impersonate me. She disabled that feature.

Is it useful as a burner for pots or for a wok?

Yes it will heat a wok

Hah mine is the same age. PT450RBI. Just cleaned mine using a wire brush, using it lightly.

Hey if you can make it last longer that's good 😀 It burns really nice when cleaner, i imagine a new one would be amazing. I was thinking ovan cleaner, but maybe that has no effect on salt. You could try wire wool to breakup the surface crud. No capacitors required ha ha 😀

This is a searing burner so it gets super hot. Also good to superheat a wok. Sear steak for 2 min per side then finish up on the grill 4 min per side at 425. Fantastic.

Invest in some barbeque degreaser 👌

I have an old Prestige 750 and 1 of the stones broke while moving the bbq. I tried to get the ceremic stones but they wouldnt sell me. I could only buy a whole burner and that would cost me 180 euros for the burner part :( So i ordered some from china (ceremic stones) and.. yeah its not the same hahahaha

Take it out and put it upside down in an autoclave it’s made out of ceramic won’t bother the ceramic

You could toss it in the oven on auto clean mode if your oven has the feature. Then vacuum it

You must have bought the Chinese cheap big box version. Yes the ones they sell at home repo and Canadian tire are made in China using cheap thin steel. The Canadian made models are sold only at bbq dealers. You pay more but there is no comparison in quality. I have had mine since 2009, 13 years and only replaced the sizzle burner once. 5 years ago. It gets used a few times a week year round.

@@bobydee4828 the new ones that are made in Canada are just as good as the ones that were made 15 years ago in Canada. But you have to buy them from barbecue retailers specialty retailers. The company only sells their prestige models through appointed dealers and the prestige models last forever. They also make cheap ones in China that are sold through big box places like Lowe's, home Depot, Canadian tire. You get what you pay for if you buy one of these made in China units you're paying about half the price and you're going to get probably half the quality. My barbecue is over $1,500 when I bought it in 2009. They have barbecues that are in 3 to 4,000 range which are larger but again built very well. But then you can go down to the big Box store and buy one for 700 bucks. Do you really think the $700 unit is going to last as long as I said 1500 or $2,000 unit? The Canadian made models use much heavier gauge stainless steel I may last for a long long time. I've changed the sizzle zone burner on mine once in 14 years. I've never changed the main burner just drilled out the holes when they get clogged up with grease which is something that needs to be done once a year at least. I replaced the sear plates and the drip tray and that was it the rest of it is just fine and will probably last me another 5 years before I have to think about buying another. I have a friend that got rid of his prestige and bought one of the cheap ones he feels it's better to buy a cheap one every five years then to put any money into his expensive one to fix it up when individual components break. it's a lot of people that have that mentality and that's why they make the cheap ones in China for those that just want to throw it out and buy a new one every couple years. believe it or not there's people that don't believe in maintaining or cleaning their grill they use it for a season they throw it out they buy a new one next year
